ok i have built a few stand in my reefing time. Now the thing is i always over build, nothing wrong with it. so here is my problem.
i can go with
THE BASE:
8x4x4x31" each one dado'ed
with 2x6 around the perimeter of the stand

Or use

2x4's doubled up and one higher then the other to act like the daod's and 2x4's for the perimeter. around the stand base.

i would double the 2x4-it would also act as a base for your hinges-then again i did not double up or dado my 220 base-i built it like a house-2x4 every 16 inches(except at my doors) Ls in the corners - top frame with 2x4 joists directly above the studs and the bottom framed the same-just use deck screws on an angle to hold everything in place.as soon as you sheet the outside it won't budge

easier to stack (glued) 2x4s together, still can run 2x6 around the sides

I vote for 2x4's, way easier, just as strong and cheaper too.

so the same way and wouldnt have to daod them either right just make the inside piece shorter to accomadate the other 2x4 going around the outside.

I build my stands with doubled up 1" ply, far more dimensionally stable than 2x4 (whens the last time you seen a perfectly straight 2x4) glass tanks are not very forgiving and it wont take much over 8' to cause problems. I suck at drawings but page 7 has pics of the platform for the 750, checked with a laser level it is within 1/32" at all four corners. http://www.canreef.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=55914&page=7

u are saying that your legs are 2" of ply wood in stead of 2x4's

yep, simpler to cut different lengths than dadoing all the uprights

So I'm adding up the 2x4's and around the perimeter am I only using 1 2x4 around the out side.

That was a temp wall while waiting on the welded tubular steel ones, the platform that the tank sits on is doubled up 1" and is 6" thick, it has cross pieces every 8", kinda overkill but it is a 8'x5' tank and weighs in at 7500lbs so I figured more was better
