Hey just thought I would start a tank journal for everyone here as I have been lurking around here for a while. My reefing started about 2 years ago when I purchased a used 100 gallon from some guy on kijiji. I had this tank for about a year and had some softies however due to the filtration ( fluval fx5) I did not do so well. durring the process I learned alot about reefkeeping and like most of us still learning.

My current setup was built by Jay and consists of about a 380 gallon flat back hex style tank and 60 gallon sump with fuge. I will post some pics when I get a chance.

Return Pump Red Dragon 12
Lighting 6' Vertex Lumina
4 MP40's 2 more comming for back wall
200 lbs Live rock
Skimmer SWC 250 s2
UV Filter
Bio Pellets in UF 20
Yellow tang
Hippo tang
Orange shoulder
Leathers
and about 15 colonies or good sized frags SPS
lots of other stuff too much to list right now pictures would help.

So far very happy with the setup which has been in progress for about a year, and running for about 5-6 months. Chances are I will be switching to the Zeovit system as I like the KZ product very much. so I will let you guys/girls know how it goes.

Thanks for all who looked and help me along the way I will try to post more when I have more time.

Pictures to come

PS im living on the same street as a famous reefer in calgary, so the water must be good here KIEN !!!!

Looking forward to the pictures.

It's about time Scott. Since I picked up the rock from you I had forgotten exactly which street you were on. We went for a family drive the other say so I could quickly give Kien some 1/2" and on the way around the street I saw 'the glow" and totally flipped out. Just ask my wife.

Then I realized it was you. WELCOME!

Hey guys thanks for looking I will try and post some pics tonight when I started the build so you can see how far it has come. If anyone wants to stop by for a beer feel free I love talking to other reefers with better ideas than me. I would like to possibly host a frag swap at some stage when things really start to take off in my tank, this is no joke. Cheers

Thanks we got It worked out, he's going to make two more replacent panels and he was nice enough to come up and put it together when the sump comes so far it should be the end of November :) his work is great eh unbelievably clean well worth the price indeed, after seeing the tank I knew I wanted him to do my sump which is going to be not far off the tank size lol alot of room:)

I got to see the 24" vertex at a friends house and all I can say is wow how impressed I was with it it's so sleek and it's seting are amazing , how is the six foot I bet your happy with it so far ???:)

Please only vinegar on the windows don't like to risk the windex in the tank. Stop by somtime. Vertex has been really good to me, I have upgraded to the new firmware and trying a expert program now. All my corals are doing good under the vertex and still growing at a reasonable rate, I think but nothing to compare to.

PS Thanks to Jay for looking after my tank for 2 weeks.

Very nice looking tank. Jay does amazing work (I can't wait to finally unpack mine). Love all the Tangs in there...is there much fighting between them in that size of tank?

frizzo1983
01-10-2011, 10:14 PM
You will be very happy with the quality of his work. No fighting from the tangs I was a little concerned about this myself but you just learn to feed lots. The orange shoulder is my favorite fish he is looking better the older he gets.

is this replacing the old tank or just another new tank? Old one was pretty unique can't see you parting with it.

Is Jay doing the work?

frizzo1983
01-21-2013, 03:47 PM
Yes it is replacing the old one unfortunately but it's for the good we are expecting our first and the wife said if you want a new one better do it now. Tank size is 84"x30"x26h

frizzo1983

I will be finnishing the rest of the plumbing this week adding eductors to the return lines and painting the background ( Black ) adding a light rack. The official move of the tank will take place 2 weekends from now. I will be setting up a go pro to capture this enormous move project. Stay Tuned

Agreed, I would throw up some egg crate to make sure no fish can get over. Talking from experience its more than an inconvenience trying to catch a fish in a tight internal overflow.

I fixed your img links for you .. hope that's OK.

That's an interesting manifold being so high like that. Any plans on how to remove the air buildup in there or just let the flow blast it out? Anytime your return pump is shutdown you're going to have a massive barf of air bubbles at startup.

frizzo1983
02-19-2013, 05:50 PM
should not be any air bubbles when return pump is on and if I shut the pump down I have a main ball valve on each manifold so before I turn the pump off i will just turn the valve and no water will drain back into the tank. Reason why i did it this way is because I want full control over each return eductor, only way I could fit valves in without being in the way. They will all be covered with a cabinet anyways.

I will be using 2 Waveline 10000 DC pumps so we will see what happens, my friends tank is the exact same design and is one of the nicest I have seen for a soft coral tank. PS thanks for fixing the pics not sure why photobucket wont work?
