I love 3 sided viewing and man I'm going to miss it with my new tank, but 96x24x24 lends itself well to an inwall style (otherwise you'd have to go island style aquascaping with pretty skinny islands) - if you went 96x30x24 or even better 96x36x24 you'd have more room to work with for 3-d aquascaping (valleys crevasses ledges etc.).

In your other spot where you're thinking peninsula is there room behind it for tank room? Otherwise everything is going to have to fit in the stand and that might be a consideration to take into account too.

Hmmmmmmmmm well you must of been here talking to the Wife Tony , we were in the hot tub and she thinks its going to look a lot better in the wall . So in to the wall it goes and to the tubs the fishes go too. once i place the order.

IN island would look a lot better, however it would be a lot better in wall plus the water access is in the Luandry room and to run a Rodi Line would be a pain....

well after talking with the builder Im going to be building the tank here on site for the ease of transporting it. And after talking with a buddy of mine about where the tank is now and some of the humid problems that i have been having it in the furnace room and since I have bought a dehumidifier and had it down stairs was getting nothing , now when I take it upstairs i pull a crap load. REASON, the humid air is making its way up stairs.

there is a CATCH.... see I get to move the 60" and put in on the wall and get to move the tank out in the open on the far wall where we have the TV.. SO its going to be something like Parker's but with a tower to hide the stuff. on the end with a fake door to Enter.

So im looking for some skinning idea for the wall /stand I was thinking of the cultured rock...

You could look for a faux siding product like Genstone:

It might depend on what's available in your area.

how wide would you make it the one on the right will be 36 " i was looking at either 12 -24" is what i can put there.

Looks pretty darned solid to me, those 2x4s will take loads of weight when they're under compression (seriously, you should see what we balance on a pair of them regularly). Assuming you were going to have sumps in underneath you might want to sheet in the back so any splashes/water vapour don't get to your drywall, although you're probably ahead of me there. That would also have the side effect of stiffening the uprights so they can't bend over sideways but that's probably unlikely anyway.

2400 lbs sounds like a beast, but the all up weight of the tank is a bit misleading, yes your tank will be heavy, but it's spread over a larger area than most, so I wouldn't be surprised if the load per square foot isn't that far from that of a much smaller tank. As long as you maintain the spacing in the supports, stands should be scalable..

As for the biting thing, as long as it's not treated lumber..

Yes Lance the stand will be skinned with maple plywood. and then stained to match a type of doors that i will buy at Home depot. all the doors will be on magnets so no hinges.

Now the canopy will have either light rack that will go up i think. or have the doors that will fold up and then fold again Haven't figured that one out. I leave for ST Jean QUE for a course for 3 weeks so I can think on what i will do.

im definately as curious as Grizz about the overflow on this one. I have a 96Lx24Hx22W and chose a full 8 foot coast to coast overflow to maximize surface skimming. I am happy with my setup, although it does take up some room internally, so I too am curious to see if a much smaller overflow design will keep up with removing nutrients from such a big tank. please post some pics your feedback when you get it running. other than that, nice tank! After a year of running my 8 footer I am already wanting a 10.

$7600.00?

Holy Moley, what about buying some Ikea cabinets and modifying them?
I just bought some pantry cabinets from Ikea, about $500 each that are 15 X 24 X 87.
Cut them to size, re-drill for the dowels and maybe do up some plywood doors with some nice edging. It certainly would be cheaper!

Also..I like the small overflow. Keep the nutrients in the tank where the corals can use them but make sure to lower your bio load.

I also have a small side overflow box on my 230g reef tank, never noticed any issues with it. My only problem (annoyance) with it was every once in awhile I would discover one of my small goby/blenny/wrasse would find it's way into it.

That is insane - was that for just the doors or cabinets too? Have you tried some of other builders merchants in town? Most of them do kitchen stuff too, and I've never seen a house we built get a kitchen, or pretty much anything else for that matter, from home depot. Maybe their consumer friendliness comes at a price?

There has to be a way of doing it cheaper if that fails. You/we could make doors cheaper if we went for something like a plywood door with a wood trim around the edge (and you could have your custom sizes that way too).. Would be more of the Ikea type look, but you could make it 'pop' a bit with a different colour of wood for the trim; something like that computer table I have if you remember it. Bubinga (expensive) or Mahogany (less so) would stand out nicely if you're going for a light wood for the main part - and you can stand the pink dust when you sand it...

A suggested already, Ikea itself may also be a viable option even if you have to go and get it - I don't remember their stuff being that expensive and I have a soft spot for Ikea. Would be well worth a look at their website. It's also worth noting that the American Ikea seems from the websites to have a better range of stuff than the Canadian one. Don't know where the nearest American store is though. I think the nearest Canadian one is Calgary until they build that one in Winnipeg...

Finally, there's a Hutterite colony somewhere that does kitchen cabinets, I'll see if I can do some finding out...

Rob.

Ok so I bought the Wood for the stand I'm going to be going with Birch. Thought that i would try something different. Got together with my buddy who is allowing me to use his shop. Came up with a plan and a drawing He would let me use the shop unless I had a vision in my head and something on paper. He knows me to good. The Stand will have access through the front however I will be using Rare earth magnets to hold the front on plus to latches for safety. I'm going to be having a feed door on the left side so im not always in the top Hmmmmmmmmmm like that is going to stop me. The stand will 78" high and then 4" piece of crown molding shelf lick will be on the top.

I'm hoping to have this stand done by end of the month. The Reason I placed my order for 5 Small yellow tangs, 1 chevron tang, and a Tommi Tang. So I want to have them in the tank before I add (LIPS AKA sailfin)
and (@ss AKA KOLE) and well LULU she just don't care and man she is getting fat close to 1.5" fat and 5"

I'm going to paint the inside of the hood white with bathroom to seal it. and its going to be stained on the outside just haven't figured out what.

Well I will have build pictures tomorrow

Well Yaaaaaaaayyyyyyy I got some progress done on the stand well Cabinets. tried to take some pictures of as myself and Dwayne a good friend of mine as we were working. So I hope these are good enough. So far I bought 6 sheets of 4x8 Birch and end roll to mask the ends of Birch. I'm still having the dilemma of the canopy since the top is going to be huge 8 feet long I'm going to run 1.5" strips all the way down underneath the top of the cabinet to stop it from bowing. the doors will be 2x48 so its alot easier to take off that attach to the Magnets. " SO HOW ABOUT I SHUT UP AND SHOW YOU THE PROGRESS....

Going with the mission style I like it simple. going to stain with a walnut stain. now is here is problem. I have to wait 2 weeks for the birch wood to come in to make the doors. However Dwayne showed me some maple that i can mix with it so i stained them both and I will get you a pic uploaded so you can see the difference. the maple is a bite lighter, however I can do another coat or 2 on it.

Well, that's going to look a whole lot better than anything you could get at Home Depot!

Maple is tricky to stain. You could coat it with a light cut of shellac for a sealer to help even out the maple first. Otherwise it could turn blotchy.
You friend Dwayne looks like he knows what he's doing though.

The shot of the 3 tangs cruising together is awesome. They must be happy stretching out in there.

What's the deal with the rolling track for the lights? Are you actually able to gain decent access to either side with the length of track you have there? Or is that some sort of light mover?

Can't wait to see them doors on.

Brett the tangs love the long tank I guess  The light rail allows me to 3 MH over a 8 foot spand and not use 4 or 5 that would take to light them if you have a SPS. However i have all LPS , leathers and softies. as you can see the rail allows the light to get all the sides that are not totally lit. I like it.

I can't wait to get the edoors on too man. especially the Tower with the sump so i can have it a little quiet. Wow that Deltec is quite loud with the air sucking need to make it quiet with a air defuser.

Good looking tank, I like your cabinets. are you going to cover the lights or leave it open?

Its the Acrylic pro adhesive I have been using it ever since I have been tiling, Its just like mortar, but adhere's faster and betterto work with IME, dont get me wrong I use mortar ,but if I can use that i will.

never mind, I just looked it up and it is mastic. wrong stuff for floor tiles man, hopefully it works good for you as it is a small area.

this is right from the instructions
"Do not use in critical water exposure areas"

this is the problem with mastics, they get soft again when they get wet, and take forever to dry as they need O2 to cure, hence why there not recomended for areas that can get wet.

I have been using this for a very long time, thanks however yuou have to let it harden and then its pretty much rock solid. you can use it in the bathrooms you can't use it on the floor where there is water all the time. the maker states it can be in a bathroom , you just need to unsure you seal the grout lines and its its softer tile you need to seal both sides.....

Is there any grout you can use in high moisture areas?? Especially saltwater....moisture? I have watched a number of builds, yours looks great by the way, and either concrete with a sealer and drain, or I suppose a good quality lino seem to be the more frequent choice. I am very much a flooring dummy when it comes to what should or should not be done so I am wondering why you chose tile versus ______? Or is there a sealer you could put over tile to make it waterproof or at the very least, very water resistant?

you can put sealers over the grout to stop the water. I find that ceramic tiles in a room can be slippery. they say that you can use the non stick floors with the sand grout in there. its suppose to work realyl well on salt water spills.

Stircrazy I gave you the wrong stuff once i get home i will get you the name , But i know it can be used around water just not as a floor like a shower

yup, epoxy grout. but you better be darn sure you like the color

totaly water proof, but you have to do it quickly and clean up excess quick as once it sets up it is a pain. this is what I used for my bar top as it won't stain, adsorbe water, ect.. by far the best solution for showers, counter tops ect.. but it does take a bit more faness to work with.. I layed out a 2X3 foot board with left over / off cut tiles which I mortered down and then practiced on that so I could get an idea of the working time and such.

I need some clarification on your overflow, how much of it flows threw your skimmer. It is hard to tell from the pics. I want to do an external skimmer on the 250, as well as 2 NextReef MR2's. That way I can keep the sump size down a little and have more room.

Also what is the flow rate of your return pump? Have been looking at lastlights pump he has for sale. And thinking of doing 8 - 1" returns after my 4way so they would alternate 4 on, 4 off.

Hey Greg 1st question
none flows thru the skimmer Greg i have a separate pup that poweres the skimmer.
Flow rate of the return pump is a Ocean runner 2500.
i will be going to a mag 12 once I get a impeller thou.

So you are just feeding the skimmer directly from the sump, I guess that would make sense for me to as i am running Vertex pellets and the return from the reactor should be feed back into the skimmer. Thanks Mike

Steve, Money Sense rated Brandon as #7 of the best cities to live in. I wont say where Kamloops was..

it is weird how branden got so high even though they were in the bottom 1/3 for most of the catagories.. but I looked at the weighting of the catagories and a city like kamloops shouldn't even be in that survey. it is skewd towards clustered cities, not spread out ones, in a about 5 of the catagories that are heavily weighted.. also we lose points because we have pretty much the fewest days of rain and amount of rain per year?? whats with that.. and where did they come up with 700mm of rain per year was optimal? optimal for what? also for statistics they are using 2006 data, whouldent that mean in 2006 that was the best place to live? not 2011.. in the last 2 years kamloops has had a over 50% decrease in crime in all catagories (bucking the BC trend) but that wouldn't be factored in to this survay.

afordable housing. hmmm doing a MLS search there is about a 40K difference between brandon and kamloops on a 3 br 2 bath detached house, but in kamloops your living in the city with the hottest summers in canada and the 5th mildest winter in canada. no mosquitos well there is some but they are like having none compared to alberta or Manatoba, long growing season, I am getting ready to put my garden in soon. was rotatilling today, and the last stuff I take out will be towards the end of october. nice motor bike season, march to begining of november. no trafic to worry about. it takes me 13 min to get down town at night or 14 to 15 min during rush hour

now there is differences in the type of city I am not from this area at all, I grew up in edmonton for 22 years, then lived in victoria for 20 years. with short stints in halifax. all thoes citys are fairly high on the list and I would pick kamloops over any of them, I originaly wanted to go back to alberta but we compromised and came here. it is a awsome blend of victoria, and edmonton. hot as heck but dry in the summer, very mild in the winter but still get some snow and lots of sun instead of 8 months of cloud and rain. for sports, this place blows away almost any city I have been in, especialy for hockey they have 1/3 the population of victoria but only 1 less arena, summer sports are rampent here.. it is a huge sports town. for recreation, kamloops is becomming as one of the premeir spots for quading, skidooing, ect. there are hiking trails and parks all over and there are to many lakes to visit with in a hour drive of here, but as soon as I win a quad in the draw next month I am going to start trying. head out with the kid and a couple fishing rods for the day. this summer will be 2 years of living here and I am still finding out more good stuff about the area as I meet more people.

when are you comming out Doug?

Steve
