I guess i should start with a little introduction.

I have recently moved to Victoria from calgary to attend school and to be with my fiance. I have been keeping a saltwater tank for about two years and have succumbed to "reefing bug" that so many of you are familiar with.

My experience started with a Fish only Biocube 29 that slowly transformed into this:
http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e41/freezetyle/DSCN0127.jpg

and then finally to a full mixed reef which included few lps some softies, Zoa/palys, and of course sps.

http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e41/freezetyle/DSCN0298.jpg
A full blown mixed reef.

From here i moved cities and experienced a full tank crash loosing all of my corals and fish (with exception of a few Zoas that are still brown).

When i finally settled here on this island. The girlfriend brought up the idea of a new and bigger tank. one that would allow is to hold a greater variety of fish and have more room to keep corals. we were planning on having a tank built but then an opportunity arose to purchases a full set up with almost all of the specifications we were planning.

The original owner did not take any short cuts on his build. Bubbleking skimmer, ATI sunpower 6 bulb fixture, GHL doser, and the most important thing... time to plan out a unique aquascape that would turn heads. His design for the tank has inspired me to continue forward with his initial vision for the tank. I hope to carry on in the manner that maintains true to his original design and vision.

This picture is where my journey Begins
http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e41/freezetyle/DSCN0624.jpg.

I am still in the process of deciding which coral pieces to keep. My Goal for this tank is to have a minimal amount of corals to accent the rock work. The other thing i would like to implement is corals with vibrant colours.

A few of the corals in the picture are not attached yet as i am still trying to figure out what I find the most visually pleasing. I have always been a person open to opinions and feed back so please feel free to help me on this Journey.

On a side note i would like to apologize to a few members who I feel i was previously an unreliable person to deal with in the sale sections. I was going through a very unstable time in my life, which was reflected in my personality and actions.

I have been following that link on RC for a while too. there is another one that is about minimalist aquascaping which is pretty good. Although there are a lot of smart ass people who just throw a rock in there 120gal and take a photo. haha.

I will get some photos of the colonies that are currently in there because there are some beautiful pieces. Its tough to think about which ones will not make the cut because they are all of decent size and had some great colours before the move.

Yea, Ive been a gypsy. Kelowna for five months, Halifax for two weeks, calgary for four months, now victoria. Part of the reason i got this tank is so i would have bigger burdens in one place and have to stay haha.

Things are settling in nicely. the sps are coloring back up after the stresses of moving. I think i have found all of the final resting spots for the coral and picked out a few that don't really interest me.

Previously the tank was being supplied 2-part via B-ionic. but i had the materials for the balling light method from the last tank that i never got to try so i am going to give the system a run on this tank. (pretty much to just use up the materials). I dont really have high expectations of it because of the subtle differences it makes. anyways, I am still in the process of dialling it in. But so far the numbers have gone from 4ml X6 (24ml total)of each cal/alk of b-ionic. to 15 X 4ml of alk. and 12 X 2ml for calcium per day. giving me steadyish values of about 8 kH. and 430 calcium. Still need to find a container for the mag so i am not dosing that yet.

One hiccup i have experienced is that the tank gets a little bit of morning sun which is kind of bleaching one of the zoa frags i have so its going to need a new home on the other side of the tank.

Your unknown is one of my favorite corals in my tank. John (lobsterboy) told me it is oxypora but it also looks identical to another coral someone called hollywood stunner chalice or something? I don't recall where I saw it but it's a canreefer's tank.

It is an LPS. next time i stop in at Blue world I will ask spencer. At the frag workshop there he must have snapped at least 10 frags off the thing and it is still huge. Fast grower from what i understand too

Yeah mine is growing very fast. It bleached when I originally switched to 250w in the Solana but in my transfer I angled that rock so this piece faces a bit away from the bulb. Red all came back I was really happy.

It's very close to touching my superman digi but since that coral has decided it doesn't want to really have a blue base and just be a pink digi I may let the lps give it a few pokes! :twised:

They seem to be kind of finicky with light. That frag started to brown out and all of the eyes seemed to almost disappear in my biocube with a 4 bulb fixture. no matter where i put it. other lps in there are fine. As soon as i put it in a shady spot under the sunpower. perked right up

Those frags are off of the big colony Brian (Biggs) grew. Wow it was awesome.. The size and shape of a punch bowl and it just sparkled.
Brian said it was an enchino, which along with oxypora are all kinda lumped together as chalice. I figured it was a Hollywood Stunner also. I have a piece of it also and it's near the bottom under 400w and mine seems to like the light.

I I'll point out this thread to Brian and maybe he will let us know how he grew that monster.

yeah, its an oxypora but at the same time its fancy name is Hollywood stunner. I think Xtreme might have gotten it from me in my old tank. It grows super quick, and watch out for stinger;s at night.

I have a colony that looks pretty much the same. Originally I got it from Fooser. You think it's Oxypora John? I've been calling mine Echinopora Lamellosa (Hollywood Stunner is what I've seen them call it in the US). Check it out in Corals of the World and tell me what you think.

Just yesterday I noticed quite a long tentacle. And for a week there has been a side that is sorta close to the LPS on my superman that has some cyano or some red slimy algae growing on it. The coral is growing well I wonder if that area got stung?

I'd keep the LPS over the superman anyday it's awesome.

Sorry to be so slow in responding but things have been busy. It was sold to me as an Echinopora sp. and is apparently not a very common coral. Mine grew to the size of a punch bowl and was growing at an astounding rate and that's why I had to move it. I kept a piece so I could grow it again. It liked light and lots of it! I kept it under a pair of 400W 20000K XM Halides and maintained very high Calcium levels (475 -500) and Mag levels (1400-1500). It's slow to start growing and seems once it reaches critical mass it explodes. It throws sweepers 6" long and is very aggresive....but stunning if you have the room for one!

Cheers!

Things are progressing!. I mentioned earlier that i was using the balling method to use up some materials that i had gotten earlier. Not sure if its that or i have found a good sweet spot for the nutrient levels in the tank, but wow. colours are starting to come out like no ones business. corals i didn't really like at the start are starting to become favourites. nice to see the vivid colours popping out.

Also added a frag of PPE's, red planet acro, garf bonsai, and a sunset monti from oceanic. Really nice pieces. bleached a little from the stress of shipping but all are coming out nicely. i could have placed them a little better but i was more focused on seeing the colony as it grows out instead of the frag. I will get some pics up as soon as i can. Mainly to get photos up as a size reference for coral to compare later down the road

Been a long time since i have updated. Usual story went home to calgary for a week over christmas and left the tank in the hands of the girlfriend. I made sure that all she had to do was to fill up the water reservoir with water and feed the fish in the morning. i even put the buckets right beside the tank with a small hose and powerhead so she wouldn't have to lift them. well she dropped the hose into the tank water and through evaporation it started a siphon. throwing the SG out of whack. so i came home to two dead birdsnest colonies and a stn'ing monti and stn'ing frags. i also lost the chalk bass yesterday which was kind of salt in the wound. he was big annd i think from what the previous owner of the tank said he was his second fish, either way not fun...

Nutrient problem is slowly getting under control. I am debating stopping use of the biopellets and running some GFO as they seem to be a little more efficient at lowering the nutrients and based on the fact that i am using the prodibio system. I had to frag a few corals in order to stop the STN. but aside from that things are on the mend and the corals are growing again.

Also decided to finally start thinking about which corals are going to get the boot and which ones are going to stay. so some things in the for sale thread shortly

Well ive been bored lately and decided to start a project. Actinic LED supplementation. Never having soldered or done anything remotely electrical i decided to start with some cheap 3w blue leds instead of frying cree's. for drivers I am waiting for some meanwell eln-35-700 drivers. I ordered 20 leds's and picked up some u-channel to use as the heat sink. Since these are cheap led's i am not going to go all out and make everything look pretty.

Havent put it over the tank yet as i am still waiting on the drivers
Here is my attempt at something DIY. the bar is going to be about 16" because i am not sure if i will use it on the main tank. and if i is that length i can always put it over the biocube.

It was time for a light change. I needed to replace all six of my t5 tubes and figured if i could get away with one fixture the money i would save would be worth the upgrade. I hung it today so i will try and get some pics up.

Just from playing with it today i am really impressed with the look of both the fixture and the tank/corals under the light. Being a big T5 supporter/user, its nice to see the tank with the shimmer. Although, it takes some getting used to.

Moved the fish over from the 50 gallon and added a bunch of rock from that sump to this sump. It was nice to see the tang able to fully "spread his wings". I had always felt bad about having him in there but he never seemed stressed so i never removed him.

Fish include:
Tail spot blenny
yellow tang
kole tang
2 true perc clowns
Blue chromis
3 Orange striped cardinals
6 line wrasse

Probably not going to add very many more fish. maybe a small angel and a hawk fish of sorts. but not for a while

Still deciding on lights so only half the tank is a lit.

I will be moving the corals over soon. I have to decide/wait on a light for this tank so for the time being i will have the AI fixture or as soon as i figure out how to hang it over the tank the sunpower fixture that i had previously. I moved all of the zoas over because i didn't think they would be as pick as the sps.

Tank is an euro-braced inverted 90. so 48" X 24" X 18". I have a 30 gallon breeder tank underneath that i added baffles to for the sump. I am probably going tripod shopping tomorrow so i will try and get some photos of everything.

thank you. I was thinking of going for something like Lobsterboys revised tank. Turns out 50lbs of rock was too much for that. I am pleased with how it turned out. it will look a little bit different after i get the seed rock off of the Marcorocks (thanks CaCo3REEF) and to the sump with the rest of the live rock i already have in there.

http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e41/freezetyle/_MG_1288.jpg

Oh for the love of ...... geeeeeeez. :( This fish is insanely difficult to get over here in Calgary. It's like unobtainium or something.

What I don't get is why in other cities it's not impossible. Grumble, grumble, grumble.

Anyhow seriously though, nice score. Very jealous!

I'm in 12 months of zeo myself and trust me I am nowhere near not even 1/10th of lobsterboys success yet. Persevering for bit more but man either it just aligns perfectly and poof, nice tank .. or .. not..

Ive seen it quite regularly on the suppliers stocking list. We actually have another one at our shop at the moment. I'm flying into calgary on the 24th i wonder how hard it would be to bring a fish aboard for you?

It's ok - thanks for the offer though. I gave up waiting and went with a virgatus instead. Very similar. I just like the blue on doliatus (they have more blue) and of the virgatus and doliatus I've had in the past, the doliatus was a better eater of valonia. What's especially funny about that is that because the rabbitfish ate valonia, so did my sailfin tang (it's like he got irritated that someone was eating food - and if there's food to be had then by golly he gets dibs on it - but after a moment of weakness and I sold the doliatus, the tang was like "Oh thank goodness I don't have to eat that crap anymore. It tasted terrible!")

I'm not sure how easy it would be to take a fish on a plane. If it's carryon then they're going to want to xray the package which seems like a bad idea for the fish - and if it goes in the hold then it has to be an extra piece of luggage and hopefully it's all insulated and heated ok - and some airlines don't let you carry saltwater on the plane because of its corrosiveness - I'm not sure how the industry gets to ship the stuff but probably for the most part it's part of the freight arrangement between companies - that may not extend to passenger traffic. Basically it sounds like a hassle to me.

Thanks for the offer though! Hopefully one day an LFS over here will see one on the list and remember my request - although I doubt it

The Rabbitfish is a little bigger than a credit card. Favourite fish in the tank right now, mainly because he ate all of the grape caulerpa that hitchhiked in.

I was really hesitant to put in the angel, but the wife kept begging for him. So happy he isn't a polyp nipper.

well. Had a really crappy run of things lately.
Cliffs notes:
-wanted to try tweaking coral colour a little bit so i started ZEO.
-stopped dosing prodibio, took gfo offline as required.
-started to notice some good coloration and increased growth.
-Started getting some cyano, and hair algae
-started losing fish
-hair algae and cyano exploded to epic proportions.
-removed zeo, started doing bi-weekly water changes, and replacing gfo weekly.
-hang head and mourn the loss of five fish.

Moral of the story... If it ain't broke, don't fix it...

I am going to be upgrading my return pump in a little bit to help with water turn over through the sump. i was also debating on swapping out the dosing pumps for a calcium reactor. In the last two months i have had my ago pump water into my alk container, and two hose clamps come undone and pump ca and alk into my stand for a few days.

Since i've been focused on training for the cross fit open, it doesn't help that i have not been paying as close attention to the tank as i guess i suppose i should be.

the two bar rabbit fish, two semi-picasso clowns, dragon faced pipefish, and potentially a flavivertex dotty back.

Its kind of weird that non of the corals or inverts are being affected by whatever is in there. seeming like its some sort or pathogen or something. no signs of ich, no cloudy/pop eyes.

I am brainstorming on whether i should pull the fish out and put them though hypo salinity or some broad medication or (more likely option) leave them in there and just keep them fed with vitamins and garlic.

We have another tiny two bar rabbit fish at the shop. I am debating buying him and putting him in with my seahorses. He would eat back my calurpa problem in there and since he can crazy to his hearts content probably would not contend for food with the ponies

So what's your husbandry schedule like these days?

To be Honest its fairly minimal. Since getting a job at a lfs that does maintenance, my motivation for cleaning my own tank and been reduced to almost nothing. Currently i do about a 10% water change every 2 weeks, clean the glass and skimmer weekly. I had a terrible hair algae problem from the marco rock i used to start the tank so i feed the fish once every 2-3 days as a habit from trying to over come that.

when i remember i dose pohls extra or sponge power or zeo food at a half dose. Usually its what ever bottle i reach in and grab

Not sure if that means not enough flow (accumulating detritus). I don't really have any snails/crabs any more, so it might be time to stock up again

i was getting some diatoms/cyano on my stand so i tried to add in a pair of two spotted gobies, which were quickly eaten by my hawk fish. i need to get the bugger out of the tank asap. hopefully the flow will help the sand bed issue

since switching to a ca reactor i have noticed a big improvement in the rate that the coral grows.

Only some of the frags are actually going to stay in my tank. Baby sitting the others for a little while. Some stellar pieces in the bunch.

As far as fish go:
Aussie harlequin tusk
two bar rabbit fish
white cheek tang
multicolored angel
lawnmore blenny
two pajama cardinals
1 banggai cardinal
and a pixy hawkfish that i cannot catch to get rid of.

I would like to add in a wrasse to help deal with some pest spices but haven't settled between the more common six line/ yellow coris (canary wrasse) or if I want to go a little more exotic with a pygmy or radiant wrasse suggestions are welcomed

I've had a melanarus wrasse for 3-4 years. Love it. Very inquisitive and constantly looking for tiny bugs to eat. It was my first wrasse and only wrasse for years. Since The new year I've been on a wrasse buying binge and the melanarus has never shown any aggression to the new additions.

I'd stay away from 6 lines as they have a reputation. You'll like a 6line about as much as your hawkish.

the challenge seems to be the first week....if you can make it past that you are golden.......... Laurie knows a couple people from Aquarium Illusions that have tried several times without any luck....in fact, one of the staff members took one from the same shipment as the one I bought and didnt have any luck....I read an article recently about the "fish jet lag" theory.....the theory is, fish that sleep in the sand have a harder time adjusting to the jet lag of traveling from around the world than fish that dont sleep in the sand....now of course the degree of this jet lag varies greatly with the species of fish.........the article was about the "Australian leopard wrasse", Macropharyngodon choati....the short of it was, historically this fish has had nothing short of a pitiful survival rate in captivity..... the author made one small change to his QT proceedure with these fish that made a huge difference in it survival rate....for the first few days the fish was NOT provided with sand, to allow for it to adjust properly to a north american lighting schedule.... Im wondering if the radiant wrasse could potentialy also be one of these fish that suffers from jet lag more so than others?

That was another fish i was considering. but the size they get i hear can be a little overwhelming. and i fear/feel i am at my fish limit for the size tank i have.

I read that article and have seen it at our shop. didn't really consider that point. Before i go adding in wrasses i was looking into the idea of adding a screen. Having an open top aquarium makes me a little nervous to add a wrasse. However, the pro's of owning one seem to outweigh the risk.

I'm sure a few would disagree with me, but a mesh top IMO is only required if you are going to stock wrasses that aren't sandbed dwellers.

From my experience and conversations with others, wrasses that burrow in the sand bed aren't AS prone to jumping when spooked, rather they will dive for the sand bed. Like I said, this is just my experience, so take it with a grain of salt.

Been there and thought that, never without a top. Never worth the risk .
I had several wrasses with no top for a few months always had the top and hardly ever used it . It just sat on top upright instead of set properly on the tank. Even watched by Coris wrasse bounce off it back into the tank one day while it sat upright Then I added a beautiful Orange back wrasse and it was fine for a month It soon became the favorite fish of my wife and I Then one day I didn't see it for the morning feeding and then my wife came in and noticed it missing and looked down to find it's dried out body on the floor. Now I lift the top to feed and do whatever else I need to do and then the top goes right back down. It took me less than an hour to build the top but i didnt use it and lost at least 3 fish. Sorry to preach just my opinion..

I forgot about those. I might try to create a canopy similar to yours. Where my tank is at right now, stand is 2.5-3 feet high. then my tank is only 20" deep (inverted 90) so i think it will look really goofy to place a block of wood on top.

Strange.. neither of those fish are wrasses, nor sand dwellers. ;) Which is all I was referring too..

Referencing 2 fish that almost no one would ever expect to jump is a bit un-fair.

You're right, there are a lot of fish that people never expect to jump and neither of those were wrasses.

Loving the new camera! cant wait to play around with the macro lens that i ordered. I also am going to borrow our top down viewer from work to try and snap a few photos of the coral that doesn't photograph well from the front.

Not happy with how cluttered the left side rock is. And how spars the corals is on the right side. Were in the process of finding a new place to live so that will be adjusted when the time comes. I will be going on vacation soon (wednesday!) so this will be my before shot to compare growth of three weeks. I am lucky to have a good reefer checking in on my tank while I'm away (thanks Spencer!).

Macro Lens came today. have to get used to it and figuring out what works. I got the Sony NEX-5r mirrorless camera, so there are limited options of lenses so far. I might look into a lens adaptor later but for the time being i am really happy with it.

I can't believe you've got a Harlequin Tusk in that tank! Does he not bother any of the other fish??

The tank looks stunning though Jon. Nice job!

Wow great thread! It was awesome to see the progression of your tank. Very well done. Maybe I missed it but what are you using for lights?

He is a puppy dog. Being a juvenile i don't think he has full spread his wings on his personality yet, so I may be kicking myself later. It also helps that the other tank mates are fairly passive, aside from the pixy hawk fish who is a jerk.

I am using a pacific sun Metis crp300. One of the relatively fist fixtures out there. I liked it because it used warm white and cool white leds on top for the blue/royal blue combo. considered old technology by todays standards, but it grows coral, gives me good color, and is pretty much worthless from a resale point of view(haha).

Thanks Kien, Wayne did a great job. He wasn't even using a tripod.

After talking a bit with Wayne, I am going to move aorund some of the colonies to balance the look. Maybe attack it this weekend, right now im too busy enjoying the surfing in Tofino

Well little bit of an update. Woke up yesterday to find out the tusk was not to be found. I fed the tank in hopes to lure him out then started poking around. looked inside the tank and all around/under the stand with no fish in sight. I had to work so i decided i would give him some time in case he was sleeping or something.

Still nothing, Decided to rip the tank apart to find his body. Pulled out 3/4 of the rock, unmounted all coral pieces and did a search...No fish. put all the rocks back in and glued down some of the coral pieces. going to finish off today.

In my "conditioning" tank i had a cbb fattening up for the 90. looked in there today and saw that he had wedged himself in between two rocks.

Some days this hobby can just suck your soul out.

Jon, I still can't believe that the tusk have just vanished...

It happens! I had a Leopard Wrasse in my 180G vanish. Probably the healthiest fish I had in the tank at the time, ate like a pig, never stressed, left the office on a saturday after feeding the tank (he was present)... Monday morning, GONE. Never to be seen again.

Sorry to hear about the Tusk, Jon. Strange that only days after me asking about him that he disappears. (No, he's not in my tank.. ;) )
