I appreciate the offer Brad.. :D

This thing isn't tiny and didn't come out of a rock. It is about 5-6 inches long. Really nice mantis.. I'll get better pics of it soon. Shao is being kind enough to hold onto it for me until my new set up is running next week.

Very nice critter that is for sure.

S**T!! Where did you get it? I've been looking for a year for one of those!

three guesses and the first two don't count.

Shao actually told me about it. I was helping him set up his CA reactor and he said he saw the coolest mantis at J&L.. I called ten seconds later and told them to hold it. Been dreaming of getting one of these guys for ages.

So I just sent a note to Allen to pre-purchase the next one they get in. I also asked him to ban you from the store. First it's the snails, then you get my shrimp!! Will it never end??

Yes I do hate you!!
Maybe if you post some streaming video, it would be like having one.
I'm sure Allen will find me my very own peacock mantis soon enough. I still think he should ban you from the store!! :D :D

Wicked mantis darren :D

Steve, from what I have read, they have been noticed to lose the occational appendage after a molt every now and then, but no where have I read that they are hard to keep. They just don't do as well in captivity as some stomatopods. That's not to say they don't do well..

That's pretty brave feeding it with your bare hands. They don't call them thumb splitters for no reason.

Nice shrimp.

That pic of a hand fed shrimp is because the shrimp has lost it's raptors. Alex is trying to tame it while it's unarmed (pardon the pun)

Mantis can have trouble moulting, as can many shrimp. They need good water and diet.
Other than that, they're not particularly difficult to keep for many years.

ok question for both of you, I hear and read that the peacock mantis is one of the ones that has the worst survival record in captivity. If this is true then isn't buing a peacock mantis in the same group as buing a morish idol, or clener wrases?

oh ya, I want to see pics of you hand feeding him Darren like that other guy on reef central :D

Steve, do you make this stuff up? I have NEVER heard that, and they are the most popular mantis sought. Do you have a link from somewhere stating this? Dr. Roy Caldwell has never mentioned this, as far as I know. He would be the guy to know these things.

Darren, Allen says that one only took a year to get, so mine should be here by next summer!!
Sure you want to keep him? :D

yep.. raptorial appendages...(I think) ignore brad with his fancy nicknames tongue.gif

Claws or smashers from now on! :D

Adam's non-use of proper nomenclature should not be taken as encouragement to use slang terminology. "Fancy nicknames" are to alleviate confusion while describing biological properties.

But ya, raptorial appendages are the smasher thingys ;)

this guy was going through some roid rage!!
he was usin' his "smashers" to try and demolish a coral skeleton that is in the tank. had no clue why he was doin it, cept maybe he was ****ed off!!

Darren, Allen sent me an email saying you paid $200 for her....I almost fell over. Then I remembered his warped humour......

DJ88
05-20-2002, 02:17 AM
The first price he quoted me was $600. Then it went down to $599.99..

You have to watch him with that humor of his.. gets me quite often that is for sure.

Aquattro
05-20-2002, 02:24 AM
That's for sure. After he gave me the realprice, I reconfirmed my order!!

Darren, cool looking critter.

Are you setting up a separate tank for him, or is he going in the new setup?

Good to hear Brad. smile.gif

Andrew,

I will put this little girl in the 30 that is set up next to my 45. It was gonna be a possible seahorse/refugium tank. But no more. Species tank now. :D :D

sorry pic is a little blurry...
http://www.members.shaw.ca/smokinreefer/mantis61.jpg
well, this mantis seems to be tame...
but what exactly are hte ramifications of hand feeding her? is she just gonna club me? or does she have the capability of slicin me up?

Aquattro
05-21-2002, 06:36 PM
If you get a full blow from her, you're gonna bleed!! My 3" mantis can smash acrylic tubing. If that one hit your fingernail, you'd probably lose the nail. On the bright side, you won't die! :D

Delphinus
05-21-2002, 06:40 PM
Good grief, it they can smash acrylic, what's stopping them from smashing tank walls? Sounds like you don't want to put one of these guys in a tank with anything less than 3/8" wall thickness, maybe even more like 1/2" wall thickness minimum? (?!?)

Aquattro
05-21-2002, 07:35 PM
Tony, a full grown mantis (12"+) has the impact of a 22 cal. at muzzle velocity. Which means they'd take off your finger very easily. It is recommended that they be housed in acrylic tanks when they're larger, because they can and have broken thru glass. Good idea not to tease one thru the glass!!
One of mine is a spearer variety and has smashed a small condo in a chunk of rock. The hole used to be the size of a pencil, about 3" deep. I could probably fit a couple of golf balls in there now.
Any one of mine can easily cut a hermit clean in half with a couple of smacks.
Darren's is probably three times the size of my largest. I wouldn't have my fingers anywhere near it.
