Before i even heard of this site i bought a 220g tank that i was going to aquascape as a freshwater tank. The day i went to pick the tank up I walked in the door and saw a sweet saltwater tank! This was the first saltwater tank i had seen in person (at least in the last 10 years). It was stunning! Right then and there i decided i was going to do SW. So a month ago I went into Calgary to check some shops out and while at Ocean City i was told about this site and let me tell you it has been a blessing:) Anyway here is a pic of the tank.

I got in touch with Grizz here in Red Deer and he has been a big help with drilling and overall tank layout. Thanks Grizz. I also have had a lot of help from Seamazter, who has sold me some equipment for a great price!
As of now here is what the tank is looking like, and also some shots of the equipment i have.

Now i have also ran into a guy here in Red Deer who is not a part of canreef, He has hooked me up with some great equipment and super awesome prices. I bought a MH light fixture with 2 T5 fixtures that attach to the main MH body for $200. He then proceded to give me a test kit, 30g tank with a filter/skimmer combo and a heater for free!! So i am planning to use this 30g as my hospital tank.
I purchased so LR today and have put some of it in my 30g tank and the rest is being stored at Grizz's place (thanks again Grizz). here are some pics i have taken of the 30g as it sits now.

It looks like a bleached Rhodactis to me.

It looks like a bleached Rhodactis to me.

That could be a possibility.

cool, thanks  I searched google and found that it could be a bleached mushroom Corallimorph. I's that the same thing?

Looks promising. How are you doing the plumbing to the sump? I see the 6 holes drilled in the bottom which I'm assuming will be for a closed loop but can't see what you did for the overflow and return.

othicx

well the 1'1/2 and 1' bulkhead that are beside each other will be the overflow, (haven't made the acrylic box yet) and the other four 1' bulkheads are all returns. My pump is a 3600 gph pump so i'm using that power to create enough circulation that i wont need powerheads. That is the plan anyway

Also the Zoa's that came on the LR opened up today, so i'm pretty stoked on that. Also i found another creature in my tank, any ideas?

Sorry this pic isn't that great.

It is some what of an experiment in the making, we are going to have 1 maybe 2 return's off the pump with check valves in case the power goes out. The overflow is going to be a herbie. There is still a little work to do on the sump and figure out how we are going to plumb it all together.

Oh,

I know lots of people do it, but having all the returns at the bottom of the tank, even with check valves would prevent me from sleeping at night.

My chicken advice would be to turn that into a closed loop. 220 gallons is a lot of water on the floor if the check valves fail.

The Grizz

If you buy a good quality check valve there should never be an issue and there is the option of a second check between the sump and the return pump.

Maybe if the valve is cleaned religiously... which would mean it should be installed with with a ball valve and union on each end so that it can be removed and soaked in vinegar regularly. A lot of people complain about filter sock maintenance but compared to that they're a breeze. I've seen check valves fail and I know what the aftermath can look like. Definitely not worth the risk in my opinion. Plus 3600 minus head pressure isn't much flow for a 220gal tank unless Othicx only wants to keep soft coral so you may want to add another pump or some powerheads anyways.

BTW that last picture looks like a Euphyllia paradivisa. But its its kind of hard to tell from the photo.

Corallimorpharia is the Order, Discosomatidae is the Family and Rhrodactis is the Genus.

Well i am planning on softies for the first while anyway, and i do have a spot where i can put power heads if need be. As for the return and check valves, I am not sure what i will do for sure i still have some options that I was thinking about. Such as out of those return holes have the pipe run up close to the top so that if there was a power out there would be much less water to back flow. I am planning on having LR go quite high up almost even breaking the surface in some spots and these spots are where i would have the returns come out. Either way I'm trying to keep my options open so that i can change stuff to be the best possible setup with the least possible risk in the end :) Thank you very much for your opinion.

On your last pic on the first page you are asking what that is. It is a polycorynactis. Orange ball anemone, though not a true anemone, it is more related to the mushroom family. Usually found in cooler waters, but also found the temperate. Always a nice thing to see in the tank. I have a few in mine, one even is nestled among my dragon eye zoas and comes out at night when the zoas are closed up.

haha nice :). Ya it looks kinda cool. So i found a big crab in my tank this morning. i have no idea what kind it is and i cant get a pic of it yet. All i saw of it was a blueish body and red eyes. All his legs and claws were super tight to his body. Any ideas? I'll try and get a pic.

Water perameters seem good in my tank and i'm going to try to put a blue/green chromis or something.

This is a good way to start out to get your feet wet, so to speak . Helps you learn what to check for and what to watch out for. As your rock was already in an established tank there should be next to no cycle. Working on some small easy coral to put in there for you.

Well, I picked up a small frag of Zoa's at fragfest yesterday as well as getting a few softies off Grizz. WOW they are amazing and looking good. All the Zoa's are open, fuzzy mushroom is twice the size from when i put him in and the finger leather is extended and feeding tenticels are out :) I also put 4 fish in too. Here are some pics.

Picked up a brain and a frogspawn the other day, but my wife took off with the camera so i can't take pics at the moment. When she gets back from work i'll take some and post them up. I also relocated the green Zoa's close to the blue Zoa.

Ya that Brain has gotten puffier in one day already so I have good hopes for it. That Brain was pretty happy when i gave it some brine shrimp too haha. Coreyskylar I will give feeding it a shot, I have noticed that it's tenticles are a lot longer at certain times of the day so maybe i'll try at those times.

othicx
09-07-2010, 03:49 AM
lol ya it did come around pretty quick, I did get a lot of frags from Grizz so that helped. Oh and those Zoa's that i got off you whatcaneyedo look great, thanks :) Anyway It's all pretty temporary though as it will all go in my 220 when it is ready. But i still have a few corals i would like to get like an anchor, bubble, and fox among others but those will have to be after i get the 220 up and going.

Time to slow down on the small tank don't want to get it over stocked. We need to get time to figure out the plumbing and build you a shopping list.

GSP and xenia, I would watch out for these, they have a habit of taking over large areas fairly quickly. Just my thoughts.

Ya im not getting anything else for this small tank, after the 15th it is all about the 220. Also i do know about the xenia and GSP growing fast but they should be good for a month.
