kinda looks like it hangs to the left a little.

You can see it's gone limp near the tip as well. Thanks for caring guys =)

I think there's an additive for that Brett.

Anyway, it has gotten much longer since the last time I was at your place having a good look at it. Impressive!

just reading these last comments made me wonder what you guys were talking about thank god when i scrolled up it was a green coral

Tank's mostly been on auto-pilot lately but I have added some new frags. I wasn't able to get clear shots of the new stuff from John but I'm happy to report it all is alive and has pretty much all the color it arrived with.

I've been part of some epic battles against my hair algae rock and my bryopsis rock. I've managed to really thin the hair algae out but that bryopsis comes back thicker than before just days after a week-long pruning assault. I've read that unless you yank it entirely out at the root you're wasting your time. I'm still wasting my time not sure what else to do.

Usual shot from my fav peephole:

Early December for fun:

Now:

http://www.fishbrains.net/images/97/plana1.jpg

This gorg is really happy. Easily tripled in size since I got it and I just love it.

http://www.fishbrains.net/images/97/plana2.jpg

This acan has colored up pretty nicely. I've moved one acan colony into my rockwork and most of my others will follow. Really like how they look at a bit of an angle to the glass.

http://www.fishbrains.net/images/97/plana3.jpg

This favia is beginning to claim the rock it's sitting on. All part of my plan to have a ginormous colony of this stuff.

http://www.fishbrains.net/images/97/plana4.jpg

This teal sps is doing really well. It's new branch is longer than the parent... and it's sending out 4 or 5 new ones. You can see a few here which I'm stoked about. I guess I caught a bit of my superman digi in the bottom left. I have 3 seperate pieces now on the rock. Everytime I work in the tank and break something it's this coral! All 3 pieces are getting a lot of the blue in the body finally.

http://www.fishbrains.net/images/97/plana5.jpg

New acan from Coralmaster has some sweet colours in it. Not the greatest shot but I have it in the shade some as I acclimate it.

http://www.fishbrains.net/images/97/plana6.jpg

A. Plana from Coralmaster. Going to be one of my favorites. Love the fat polyps and subtle colouring.

http://www.fishbrains.net/images/97/plana7.jpg

A. aculeus from Coralmaster. Tough to see the cool colours it has in my shot which I guess is washed out or something but I'm excited to see this one grow too.

http://www.fishbrains.net/images/97/plana8.jpg

And finally an ugly shot of this new algae I've been blessed with. It grows well at night and when the halides are off. It slowly dwindles away with the halides on but some always manages to stick around. Can someone please id?

So I just wrapped up one of my most frustrating reefing nights ever. So glad I took pictures yesterday!

1. I decide I'm going to siphon some of that nasty algae on the sand up so I hookup the big siphon hose with the 3" tube on the end. It's not strong enough apparently to suck the actual algae up. Tank is a massive mess of debris and sand now.

2. In yanking the tube out I finally break the main part of the superman digi off the rock. I am swearing a lot now and my wife isn't too impressed.

3. expoxy/glue the colony back in place

4. Continue siphoning with just the hose and forget to see how much water it in my bucket. Love it!

5. Digi falls off

6. re-attach digi with a very ugly amount of epoxy. Be months before it looks nice again.

7. Go into tank-attack mode and do all the moving of my acans.

8. Toss in a waterchange

9. after i cleaned my skimmer pump today it wouldn't restart until i quickly poked the needlewheel so i opted to leave it running in case while i did the waterchange. It decides to totally overflow and dump today's skim back into the tank because the water level was too high after the change. Guess I never took out quite as much as i put in.

10. Blenny has been missing for 2 days.

11. Turn lights off and forget about it! So frustrated right now :twised:

Another day in reef aquarium paradise eh  Sorry to hear but sorta glad to hear when it's not just me who has days like this ... day after day .. after day .. after day.

That skimmer is too new to be giving startup issues? Is the magnet perfectly cylindrical? Everytime I've had a pump with startup issues that wasn't on account of a mesh-mod, I think a swollen magnet was eventually found to be the cause. Very vexatious and I hope that's not the explanation! But might be worth checking next time you open the pump up.

Lance we'll have to set you up sometime. Maybe not when it's minus a billion outside over here though. Ugh. But if you're ever out here drop me a line and we can do some gorgonian haircuts.

So with the warm weather we finally had last week my fans weren't able to hold the tank at 80. As soon as I saw 81 on the Ranco I started looking for a chiller. Last summer I only had one halide and I had applied a film on my main floor windows that lowered the inside temp a few degrees. The condo board wanted the film off since the windows look like foil outside and now i have 2x250w. I have a window AC unit I run in the summer but I still wanted peace of mind so I found a Pacific Coast CL-650 thanks to Brad (Abcha0s) and a mag 12 to feed it courtesy of Keith (24storm). Thanks guys for the very generous deals!

Now I had bought a drop in coil unit a few days earlier but it turned out to not work. Check out this super rad stand I built or the failed unit ABOVE my ballast. This chiller had about 6 feet of incredibly stiff flex/coiled piping that I spent 2 hours feeding through the wall (which has a much prettier hole in the drywall now lol).

http://www.fishbrains.net/images/97/chiller2.jpg

Here is my rad ghetto stand for the new inline chiller. I wanted to keep it looking like my handiwork in the stairs themselves and I think I succeeded. All about using up my scrap wood haha.

http://www.fishbrains.net/images/97/chiller1.jpg

And here is the thing setup and running. I have it running off my Ranco (chiller set to 75 and so when the Ranco detects 80F it powers the unit which of course will run because the water going through it is not 75. It took about 12min to pull down 1F. WIN. I get a bit more heat down here in my unfinished office too =)

http://www.fishbrains.net/images/97/chiller3.jpg

I thought I'd show you guys a pic of the braided hose I used as well for fun. It's there on the floor if you look close:

Oh wait I see now... yeah the stand is sorta skinned =)

Just one-side good 1/2" like my current tank. It's cheap and it works. I had the poor kid at Rona do like 20 cuts from 3 sheets for me! I don't have a garage anymore and can't fit an 8x4 anything into my basement so he and I will be friends for the build lol. The stand is currently in the 'attack with wood-filler' phase and is becoming pretty smooth at the seams. I haven't touched it in a week or so since work got too busy to breathe. My plan is to maybe spray this one in the same white/cream colour for a smoother finish than I have upstairs.

Just some random pics of my other stuff.

This guy from Dez finally decided it's time to get growing. I had some bad hair algae I just recently beat and on the right side of the base you can see a spot where the tissue was growing around the algae. It's closing up now.

http://www.fishbrains.net/images/97/easter28.jpg

These 2 caps were some of my first corals and were also from Dez. Both melted away to almost nothing when I mounted them. I'd asked him to frag them right there on the spot so they were likely pretty ****ed. They're mounted quite low in the tank so they're growing slow but starting to look really nice.

http://www.fishbrains.net/images/97/easter29.jpg

http://www.fishbrains.net/images/97/easter30.jpg

http://www.fishbrains.net/images/97/easter31.jpg

Kien's frag that would never branch (was one of my very first pieces of sps) got the chop while I was re-structuring that end of my tank. It was attached to some rock that this guy from Dez was on. It's coloring up nice but also has never really grown. Both are on the sand until I decide where they're going.

http://www.fishbrains.net/images/97/easter32.jpg

This digi got owned by the cap which is doing great and finally a nice green. I let the cap touch a millepora which is above it and the mille beat it down. You can see the white rim up top. To some extent I am allowing things to touch and watching what happens. In every case so far the corals are sorta co-existing and I like how things look when they mingle.

http://www.fishbrains.net/images/97/easter33.jpg

Hollywood stunner which I had to remove from the scape as it was pretty aggressive and growing insanely fast. It's home is an old mag float and I can move the colony around now. It's growing up the glass now but I just rotate it every few days to keep it seperate.

http://www.fishbrains.net/images/97/easter34.jpg

And a new cutey who lives on and under the stunner. He's never more than a few inches from the thing and my Kole always stops by for a cleaning.

http://www.fishbrains.net/images/97/easter35.jpg

My secret weapon. This guy transformed my sandbed in mere days. My bryopsis, hair algae and cyano disappeared shortly after. I also swapped some free t5s I'd been running and they could have been 2+ years old I'm not sure. So perhaps the combination lead to the triple victory but I just love this girl. Her name is Sandy.

http://www.fishbrains.net/images/97/easter36.jpg

Before my re-scape:

http://www.fishbrains.net/images/97/easter37.jpg

After. I love how open it is now on that end and I've already begun putting some of my new frags into that area.

Not on zeo at all. Just gfo and carbon for me.

I was concerned about him/her dumping sand everywhere as well. It's a diamond watchman goby. It mostly just sifts and dumps right where it's laying on the sand. I have noticed that slowly all my sand is ending up against the back wall of the tank but I think that's more to do with the currents in there. My corals are never under sand. One of the best purchases I've made so far. The first week I had her visibility was poor as all the fines in the sand got disturbed. I put my filter sock back on as I noticed my skimmer not performing with the grains in the water.

Hi Brett

That's pretty much what's happening in my tank right now. Did the filter socks eventually clear up the water? How long before your skimmer started working again?

I do like my pair. They tend to stay within inches of each other at all times. They have built several homes by piling up the sand around "their" rocks. My sand bed is looking much better since introducing them.

It was less than a day after I added the sock that the skimmer started working again so not too bad. It might take you a little longer perhaps as you have more sand/gallon and less return flow/gallon than me...

Pretty entertaining fish to watch. I'll grab at least one more when I transfer tanks.

If you have i-tunes, you can purchase license rights to use some artists material. I can't remember what exactly it's called but it's an upgrade...I upgraded my whole library and it cost me around $30ish, once this is done the music has code in it and you can upload to youtube etc.

So the red bugs that were only on the one frag and not proliferating... yeah they were on some expensive new frags and were starting to gain ground. I decided to go ahead with treatment.

Managed to catch one of my new porcelain crabs and the only 2 little hermits I have and put them into my high-end qt system which is elevated out of cat territory:

http://www.fishbrains.net/images/97/qt.jpg

The other porcelain and my cleaner shrimp evaded all my traps and baits so best of luck to them I guess. It's about 10 hours later and I can't find any bugs and both remaining critters seem to be eating and frolicking about like before so my fingers are crossed.

I swear my PE on the more heavily affected piece is already much better!

I've had them for ages and no I don't know where they came from. Treating for them sure is easy though.

Thanks guys!

Few new corals and a new fish:

Two awesome pieces from Brad (Abcha0s). Thanks man!

http://www.fishbrains.net/images/97/anthias4.jpg

3 of the 4 pieces of Red Planet Wayne (Wayner) hooked me up with. Thanks man! The fourth is higher up to experiment a little. These should have more green base...

http://www.fishbrains.net/images/97/anthias2.jpg

Just anothr shot of my Plana. Easily my favorite coral in the tank. Fast grower and the contrast between the rich purple and pearly base makes me weak in the knees.

And this manly hulk is named Frank.

Nothing like trying to fit this many frags (which I like to mount on rubble to boot) onto a frag rack that is on the side of the tank the kids are ALWAYS gawking into and touching with fingers! I have tape placed over the magnets and have threatened the kids so we'll see how it goes! There is no room left in the tank and even the back wall is full. I'm going to rescue all the other frags from the sandbed to a similar rack on the other side of the tank as some of them have been looking a bit faded especially as the corals up top keeping growing and generating more shade...

Since you are using the rack without the frag plug posts to secure into the holes you may want to keep an eye on them as the snails and such will knock them off the rack & into the sand.

Oh I know I was worried about that and I only have one snail. And you can guess where he has been hanging out! The rack is touching the front pane and angled towards it a bit. I picked the safest spot for frags to fall lol. Nothing but some zoas below.

I realized today the tank's a little over a year old. It's funny my wife decorated with the same caution tape for halloween this year: it's in the before and afters lol. I also tried out my top down box... I'm not too great with it but I did a dump of the ones I took anyways.

One thing I've come to terms with (maybe it's just an issue with my tank) is that all the corals can't look their best at the same time. Some look better now than they ever have and some have dulled or faded.

Looks great Brett, its filling in nicely and just in time for the big move  I agree, it would be nice if all the corals looked good at one time (talking about my tank) it seems I finally get the pink poci from brownish to pink and the yellow acros have all gone greenish brown

Thanks! I can't even imagine how many frags will be 'created' when I try and seperate these rocks. If you recall my frags all started very close to each other and almost all of those corals are in the same place! I haven't trimmed at all so things are very tangled and in some cases fused

When are you planning the big move/shut down of the 97?

lastlight
11-15-2011, 03:35 AM
Yeah the price was right but we had a bunch of plans with a few lfs in the mix. Toughest part was telling her I needed to drive back home across the city and acclimate it lol.

When are you planning the big move/shut down of the 97?

As soon as my cycle is done I suppose it's go time. Currently my elos ammonia is acting weird. The colour is quite dark indicating it's maybe higher than the max (1) on the chart but the green is not even close to the same hue?! I have a nitrite kit as well though so one way or another I'll know when it's time.

I've got a branch of superman digi that I broke off accidentally that will be a guinea pig for a day or two first I think.

Dez
11-15-2011, 03:46 AM
Oh yeah, the superman. I sold that colony a while back. Hmmm, one day I'll have to try it again. So many corals I like, but so little room. Kind of depressing. For the last year instead of adding corals like most people, I've had to remove corals - corals that I like. I hope that your move goes smoothly.

It's like a week with very nice PE which sucks because what blue it has I never get to see. So it ends up looking too similar to my orange digi but a bit more red/pink.

Next time you're in town come over and I'll snap some off.
