Hello,

Thanks to Snaz in identifying this. A security issue has been identified with Tapatalk so I have disabled this for the mean time.

I've been exploiting the vulnerability for months to make Tony's posts seem at least half funny. Good call on locking that down though.

if you've upgraded your old 3G iphone to os4 like me you'll know it's way too laggy and glitchy to even consider using tapatalk anymore anyways.

Not to get off topic.. but my iPhone was terribly when upgraded to iOS4 and I even had trouble sending MMS. Then there was an update just a few days ago to iOS 4.0.1 and it is back to normal!

TapTalk on Canreef worked great!

I should have clarified... 3GS ... hopefully that fixes the 3Gs ...

now to make it look like I'm on topic...

for those of you who don't know what TapaTalk is .... it is an application that we install on our phones that allow us to read the forum in a comfortable manner.

I *think* with the new update it's running as well as it was before or very close. For frag's sake that was unbearable. Thanks!

Just out of curiosity did anyone have troubles with tapatalk only updating a max of 19 threads even tho you had it set to fifty? I was getting 99 threads on RC but only 19 on Canreef.

I'm saddened by this. If the issue is repaired/fixed will you re-install?

TapaTalk is the only way I get access to the forums 98% of the time. I'm sad its disabled, but fully understand why, and appreciate it.

In the mean time who has iPhone 3GS browsing alternatives? Just looking for options.

You aren't able to access via Safari?

I view in landscape and while it is sorts small a quick double tab on any column will zoom you in so the thread titles for example are full width. I actually had issues with tapatalk and went back to Safari day one. No troubles at all.

Sorry not now. I've been busy working on some other projects related to the site and can't even get enough sleep... However, I do want to re-visit this again in the future once I believe their product is matured enough but not anytime soon.

You can, like they said, use Safari.

TapaTalk appears to use considerably less data in the long run. I am one of those scary-heavy users that make cell phone carriers cringe when I take advantage of their unlimited plans. When I switched to TapaTalk I saw a significant decrease in the amount of data I use(d). I also like the ease of use it provided to me. My wallet doesn't like it when I browse via Safari, it starts making this noise that goes something like "kill me now! Please!".

Titus, thanks for your response!

I'd just like to register my support for turning Tapatalk back on, once the security concerns have been addressed. The app was somewhat buggy, but it generally worked well and really made browsing the forums easy.

I would like to add my support for Tapatalk. It is easier to view forums with Tapatalk then with the browser on a small screen and Tapatalk is faster and uses less data. Please consider reinstalling it when they fix this bug which seems to only be in the Android version.

The security issue with Tapatalk might be fixed if I am reading this correctly. It is the responsibility of the Admin to investigate and decide of this feature should be turned back on.

That's great. I hope it is fixed and can be turned back on soon.

Keith, how exactly did the Android bug affect the iPhone users too? Did it somehow give access to the server side so people could access anyone's passwords?

Not trying to slam Android here, just wondering how this bug worked?

I don't know the whole story Ron but I think you can follow the links and get the full story if your interested. I'm speculating that the first version of TapaTalk for Android the developer missed some encryption options so queries to the servers were returned un-encrypted and thus readable if someone was snooping. I'm further speculating that the user doing the queries would have to be a server admin anyway so this exploit probably did not go far.

It was good to see the bug finder, an Android developer btw, contact Tapatalk right away and work to close this vulnerability.

I think the vulnerability is easy to fix and should be a quick one (famous last words of course.. good 'ole Murphy...)

Anyhow. The big reef and aquarium forums don't seem too concerned as I can still access them through Tapatalk.

Also.. this seems to be a moderately popular thread so I think quite a few people use Tapatalk. Maybe because it is summer time and people need their Canreef fix while they are out in the park, beach, or any outdoor activity.

Hopefully it gets fixed here.. it was such a bonus... I guess I'll have to resort to reading the other forums when I'm out. (or just enjoy being out.. ;)

Hello,

Not yet. I still have a long list of to dos behind the scene before getting to this. Things like security, remote access for the Staff team, monitoring, and there appears to have been a mail issue. After all these, I have to update the board's software, then do a migration to the v4 version. Then I need to revisit some long planned enhancement also.

But somewhere along all this I do have Tapatalk in mind and will try to schedule in when I can review its security and feature set again.

Is this not one of those "low hanging fruit" type of things that can be quickly knocked off the list and will be noticed by a lot more board members than the things ahead of it on the list?

I can sympathize with a user who misses a great way to read his favourite forums and I can sympathize with a sysadmin who always has more work than he needs.

The trick is finding the right balance, user vs. sysadmin. I think is this case I would side with the users and move tapatalk higher up the priority list but this is not my forum and only my opinion.

Hello,

Guys I am reading this thread from time to time. I have the following on my list which I believe is a bit more important than enabling Tapatalk.
-Re-enabled photopost and vbGallery (both are down after the site transfer due to code incompatability).
-Fix a utilization issue on hardware.
-A few other non-imminent issues but stuff I need to work on to get the site moving forward.

The PhotoPost thing is an outage for me. The utilization issue can potentially thrash the site (not likely but I see increase in alerts I'm getting). Tapatalk has a work around, however, by browsing the site using normal browser. I think the choice is clear to me.

I hear you titus. I can suggest for the hardware side you might want to investigate virtual server with a reputable host. We have about 30 Windows and linux VM and love it. Need to add another NIC or increase RAM it only requires a reboot. Recovery is awesome, pooch an install you can do a full OS, SQL and data recovery with a couple of clicks and be back up and running in minutes rather than hours.

I would recommend any sysadmin look at hosted VM solution for their next server.
