I'm late discovering this (mostly because he's been banned from RC for some time now) but his legendary 280 sprung a leak and he's torn it down. I'm still reading but I think he's planning a newer and bigger tank.

Interesting note...this tank ran for 6 1/2 years and was built by none other than Mitch of Bow Valley.

Gee, it seems like you aren't a reef somebody unless you've been banned from RC. :)
It's a real shame his aquarium popped a seam. Seems like all reef tanks are destined for a disaster of one sort or another eventually.
Yikes! How the heck did he get banned from RC?!?

Wow, very unfortunate event, glad all his livestock is still safe, that toadstool leather is huge! From what I gather apparently he was banned for "copy right issues" which led to drama and more drama on RC. I do look forward to his next tank, he has helped so many people with his tank builds and this next one seems to be bigger and grander than the one before.

I think he bought the tank used if i'm not mistaken, so it was probably older than that.

Isn't it ironic that all the reef somebody are banned from RC except Randy. Melev was an editor for their reefkeeping online magazine too. With the money RC generate ....
okay with regard to his tank, I was thinking this is actually old news. I got the news first on Facebook a week ago - you can connect to all the Reef somebody on FB now :P

What a disaster waiting to happen. I think we can all agree this is a nightmare we all don't want to face.
Good luck to him!

Gosh, I hope not! :(
Here is his new build.

That's a great design. :)

His thoughts about leveling leg is good but not good enough. If anyone can actually contact him this is what I would pass on to him .
He needs to have 6 - 8 legs for that size of tank and have a metal pad welded to larger size bolts as I have done on my 8' 165 gal (225 gal total) 10 foot pads in total.
Just my thoughts

I think in the blog post he was actually discussing how that design with the bolts scared him. Far as I know he's not doing that but I could be wrong.

I kind of figured that but if designed right they work. I have built things with a higher weight and less legs, it all depends on the size of the bolt / threaded rod.

Bad news... seems that his huge leather (my favourite coral in his tank) has taken a turn for the worse. I really hope it pulls through.
