View Full Version : My Tanks! Well, My Attempt!

I figured the tank been running long enough to feel confident to now share the glory!!! haha just kidding. I am just scratching the surface of this fantastic hobby. I decided to start small in the saltwater world and set up a 30 something gallon mini reef, with big brother in the basement on the way. I wanted to make my mistakes on a smaller scale for the sake of convenience and cashflow. I can't say I've made any horrid mistakes, I read books, but already know what I am going to do differently for the big tank. #1 Not buying any fish unless its on "the list", instead of getting a fish to just put in the tank. #2 trap pests before I put in my stuff. #3 coral dip!? yes please.

The 30 something gallon
* It has too many fish, nothing new there. Before anyone goes haywire there are a couple baby fish (that grow relatively large) that will go into big brother, so don't even worry about it. haha I also do have the nicest maroon clown ever, no big deal.
* SPS frags - digi's, milli, acro, birdnests
* LPS - bubble, pink brain, red brain, candycane's
* mushrooms
* ricordia (made a baby! hooray!)
* peppermint shrimps, skunk cleaner shrimp
* pink / yellow cucumber
* orange / green / purple multicolor linckia
* pink emerald crab
* cleaner crew - astrea, turbo, mexican turbo snail, hermit crabs
* nasties - live rock crabs, bristleworms, bit of cyano

I use DI water and IO salt. I like Elos test kits the best but also have a couple Salifert and API.

Bigger Brother!! Not 300g or anything, but big enough. Nearly there for equipment but I am thinking of doing a bit different of configuration for tank dimension. Am thinking something along the lines of 48"W x 30"D x 25"H. I don't completely understand how sumps work yet, but it will have a sump as well. I am not a huge fan of the hang on everything that I have on my 30G. Plus, having a place to keep macroalgae and nasties is ideal as well.

My favourite stores I frequent are Red Coral, Gold's and Ocean City.

I have met a few of the canreefer's and look forward to your feedback, advice, and look forward to meeting more of you along the way. Now you all play nice here or I'll have to smack a *****

Pictures another day!

Alright, change in plans already. Going with medium brother next, 90G. I have all the equipment parts now. This will allow me to have my cake and eat it too or whatever. I can keep the custom build plans flexible as the basement gets renovated. It WILL actually get renovated as its not coming out of my fish budget... comes out of bf's budget. Next is just sand, salt and rocks. Probably in a few weeks, gotta get my biking pass for Kicking Horse right now, and possible motorhome fix up!

Hopefully can put up pictures this evening, no idea where bf has put the camera...

The easiest way to post pics is to use photobucket.

Wingin It
06-12-2010, 05:09 AM
try opening your pic file in Paint and then re-size it to 25% of original or something and then try uploading...or you can upload to a site like photobucket.com and imbed :)
Sweet little tank btw. I'm envious!

Okay, here's some older pictures, but it'll give you an idea of whats going on.

Here's my currently tank approved crab
http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i264/trinacarreau/crabby.jpg

Blue / Brown Candycane - since had a little accident - red brain trumps candy 1:0, a couple polyps gonzo, but the rest is still good.
http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i264/trinacarreau/bluebrowncandy.jpg

The Bubble - he's showing his good side, had a bit of transport damage in the middle, but is doing pretty good otherwise
http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i264/trinacarreau/bubble.jpg

Blue Galaxy Clam - its pretty cool, I have him sitting on a small rock so I can move him around if needed. It also has a small coral growing on the side of its shell
http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i264/trinacarreau/clam.jpg

FTS as of May 21, its changed quite a bit since even this picture, and is pretty full right now, hello 90G.
http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i264/trinacarreau/may21.jpg

Red Brain - he's now front and center in the sand and happy there

From what I saw today your tank is so so full and is looking good but once you move out some of the Birdsnest frags you would have some more room. Everything you have in there would look great in the 90 with room to grow.

Haha yes, a few more people dropped by yesterday to pick up pieces. And you got it! Quite a few of those corals will be going to the bigger tank too! The 30g purpose is a frag grow op really. Haha. I still want to keep the 30 in the office, makes me want to spend time in there and I sometimes work too. :)

I now have my rocks & sand for the 90! Will start filling it with water on Sunday, not entirely looking forward to that task... haha

Here are some more pics of my current tank along with a few new corals that I purchased from Gold's!! They just got a sweet shipment in, wish I had room for more right now!!

My favorite SPS - a frag from Argentiner. Picture doesn't do it justice! Has nice long polyps with bright white / green ends.

Some nice growth on my birdsnests, left from Fishytime, right from Argentiner.

Not a good spot for the blenny... jeez, I gotta get a cover for that! He doesn't go in while its running, thankfully! This is also the only fish who bites me

Equipment list ?

Also how long did you have your tank up before adding the Green Mandrin?

trinac
06-23-2010, 01:04 AM
Hi Leah, the cucumber is a pink hawaiian knobby I think? Fishytime or Kevin might have a better idea, I bought it from Red Coral. It found a nice spot on the front glass that it likes and filterfeeds. I spot feed it pretty much everyday with zooplankton, and when its lucky it catches mysis pieces.

Thanks Rick!

Equipment list:
Remora protein skimmer
XP1 filtration system (I clean it once / week)
4 x T5 lighting system
Koralia 1
Koralia evo 750
Ebo Jager 100 heater

I think thats about it...

And I added the dragonet a few months after the tank was set up. Probably a little early but it also eats mysis as well as the copepods.

Leah

Thanks Trina,

I am in love with your cucumber, Lol
Do you plan on moving everything into the 90 when it has cycled? And if not what are your plans for the new tank?

trinac
06-23-2010, 09:44 PM
The cucumber is neat I agree, but no you can't have it Leah... haha jk

I plan on moving a couple of the corals to the bigger tank and a couple of the fish. As the frags grow, I'll move them to the bigger tank, and if some look like they'd do better under metal halides they'll go to the big tank too. The 30g will let me grow up the various frags I purchase so they look slightly nicer than pegs when they go into the 90! I still want a mix of LPS and SPS in the 90.

Looking like it'll be filled up this evening and everything turned on!!

I almost forgot to mention, all of my fish are in quarantine right now. I skipped a crucial stage and put a fish in that looked great... ahh, well the quarantine tank is in use now with cupramine and all of the fish are doing fine. Except the blenny, who succumbed to ich quite quickly. Poor guy. The rest barely show signs, but a couple have a few spots.

Okay so summer has put the damper on things a bit! But, the tank is 10-4 a go, roger that. Everything is running bla bla. I have purchased a couple new tank buddies!! I have a Blue / Black Spotted Boxfish and a Watanabe Angel Fish at Gold's with my name on them. Just waiting on the fishies to be done with their quarantine tank then back to Gold's to throw these guys in there!!!

I have been waiting on one of those boxfish since January!

And the angel fish is too nice to pass up, here's the description from a website:
"Members of the genus Genicanthus are planktivores and will not bother corals or clams in the aquarium, making them the perfect reef angel. Not difficult to keep once acclimated. Keep only with very peaceful tankmates."
I also read that they stay on the smaller size (less than 6") and tolerate other angels too!

Delphinus
07-22-2010, 12:20 AM
If I'm thinking of the right fish, I have always loved (and coveted) those blue spotted boxfish but tread carefully: there are several cases where they've kicked off and taken more or less the entire tank with them due to the toxins released. I myself was thinking "one day" I'll try one but maybe in a tank by himself.

Just a heads up in case you weren't aware of that aspect with that species!!! Not something you want to find out the hard way.

trinac
07-22-2010, 02:46 AM
Yah, I think its the same fish. Kevin at Gold's has warned me, and then warned me again.

I will do my best to keep everyone happy and healthy!! Its the one fish though that I absolutely must have so I am taking my chances. I may have a different opinion of this decision at some point. But, we'll see!!

Just realized the fish have now been in the hospital tank for 30 days now! I guess I can start making preparations for them to return to their homes... thats awesome!!

I think the clown will go back to the office tank... as well as the Mandarin.

Two biggies definately to the basement tank...

What to do with the chromis.... flush em?! hahahha just kidding. Maybe I'll leave them in the quarantine tank till I decide.

Greenmaster

What is wrong with your chromis? Why do you want to get rid of them? Do they not play nice?

trinac
07-26-2010, 04:54 AM
New fish are home and in the quarantine tank! I love the spotted boxfish SOOOO MUUCCHHH!!!!!!!! I just want to squish him! I love watching this fish, its so friggen adorable. Even the bf, who doesn't care that much for SW (gasp! I know) thinks its awesome. Both fish are eating already.

Nothing wrong with the chromis, but I only want 3 fish in my 30G, and already have two in there. I will get either a small dottyback, anthias, damsel, or wrass instead of the two chromis. Looking for a fish that will grow max 3" and dependent on type too. I don't want one that hides all the time or one that is aggressive - have a mandarin goby. So, the plan is to wait till the new guys are done quarantine, and then give away the chromis.

I'll shop for the last addition to the 30 later in August.

Nice new fish there Trina! Hope you have better luck than I did with the watanabei. After I got them I dug a little deeper reading on them, and they are pretty hard to keep alive the first couple months. Males are worse than females. I lost a pair of them in QT a while back after they were initially eating great. Such a nice looking fish though. Will look great in your big tank.

Is the aussie brain the green one?! haha I am not sure what some of them are... haven't finished reading my "Aquarium Corals; Selection, Husbandry, and Natural History" text yet... Oh holy crap!! My 30G blew up tonight at about 6pm. What a disaster haha. I was sitting on the couch in the living room and heard this SHHHHHHH, so I yelled at Marcellus to see what the hell is was doing. Then the dog ran into the office, I followed and I see water... Holy eff!! Then I really yelled at Marcellus and had him hold the side of the tank that had come apart and ran downstairs to get a long piece of hose then threw in the water pump into the tank and pumped the rest of the water out of the tank into sink. I left a couple inches for the fish and whatever to keep alive while we cleaned up the water. It amazing how fast that thing drained... 10G or so out in seconds. Then I hauled the live rock, fish and corals and dumped er in the 90G. Sucks losing this tank, because it was so cute, but the corals, I have to admit... look way more awesome in the 90G lighting than under my T5's!! Just brilliant. Fish, shrimp, and anemones all seem to be surviving. SPS are protesting in their usual way, but I am sure everyone will have settled down by tomorrow.

I'll do a water change and redo the carbon this weekend to keep everyone happy.

Other updates..

*Watanabe jumped... sucks, and there goes $100 yay
*1 blue chromis MIA, and 1 blue chromis found a new home (fish store)
*I major suck at quarantining... the spotted boxfish must have had a spot of ick, good luck finding that, and my tank has ich again. This will be super awesome catching all these fish in a much larger tank, which is also packed with live rock... Since its a jumbled hodge podge, I'll just take all the LR out when I want to catch them and medicate them AGAIN.
* Cuddlefish egg hatched while I was on holidays, haven't seen him since. Probably died as the tanks were on auto fish feeders.
* ATO's rule the friggen school magne!! LOVE THESE THINGS
* I also have my automated fish feeder still going once a day... nice alleviation from multiple daily feedings. So they now get a mid day pellet feeding, and I feed them their frozen plankton in the evenings.

And I watched Finding Nemo the other day, I think I like the movie even more now that I have my own mini reef.

Everybody survived, corals included with the exception of two birdsnest frags, still have three others so its all okay.

The 90 is a jumble of rocks right now though, I am not entirely looking forward to re-landscaping!!! I need a plan of sorts to stack the rocks in some fashion that is aesthetically favourable, but haven't come up with anything yet. If you have any winning ideas please feel free to pass along! Drawings would be preferable, the tank measures 4' x 18" or something like that. You'll get an amazing prize if you win, how does a 3D marine fish bookmark sound?!! Awesome, I know.

Fish are all doing good. Oh, I got a new fish today, a stellar looking Lubbocks Fairy Wrasse. Very bright pink.

I think I've already mentioned this, but I love love love my lighting system, its a metal halide / fluorescent / LED combo. My corals look way more bright and are growing way faster too, instead of under just T5's. My anemone's also like this lighting system better too.

Alright its been awhile! I have been harrassed by Brett to update this! haha

90G is still up and running! Had a bout of unhappiness when my protein skimmer decided to not work for awhile. Its back working again, as of tonight actually! I bought a new impeller for it, but I think it was just a simple matter of the airline being clogged...

I am looking forward to the tank looking pretty again. Still haven't done my aquascaping... lol I will tackle that beast soon!

trinac
01-24-2011, 01:25 PM
Had an issue while I was away in Orlando... And then the protein skimmer decided to overflow rather dramatically this morning... The tank is getting shut down. I wish I had more time / money to get everything set up properly - like a sump etc. But, it just isn't going to happen for awhile, so this tank is going to get taken down until I am able to have the time to take care of a tank properly.

So, I have some stuff for sale. Will post later on.

Will sell live rocks / fish first of course.

Anyways, this is embarrassing considering the very small amount of elapsed time... but... I change my mind. LOL There is no way I can sell my aquarium. Even though it is a lot of work right now with my schedule, I would miss it too much.

Here's the deal though, I obviously need a better set up. And need some help at it - don't understand sumps etc. So, I'll save my pennies and work towards a "tank upgrade" which is proper and without floods.

Algae outbreak central!

Here's the plan of action:
* Get rid of mechanical filtration system! (or put something else in it?? I remember Doug mentioning that its best to put crushed rock in these, and I said that I would clean my filters once per week - that didn't happen)
* Try out a GFO reactor
* Try a mangrove
* Replace water system filters
* Massive water change with rock "hair cut"
* Only frozen food, and less of it.

Wow I suck at this reef thang right now lol

Comments encouraged on my plan!! I feel like I have no idea what I am doing anymore lol Old tank syndrome... complete.

PS. I don't have a sump YET. Going to work with Jay soonish to build a new fancy tank.

If someone does suggest putting rocks in mechanical filtration system rather than the foam pads, please advise on how to break up said rocks.... I've tried using a hammer, and it didn't work out how I had hoped.

Trina,

In my opinion, I would not go with mangrove because i don't think it is worth it for couple reasonss

1) You need to run lots of them to export nutrient. For heavy stock, i think you need like 1 per gallon. Lots of ppl say 1 per 10 gallon but with my reef setup, i found I need way way more. I took them off after using them for one year because pellets was much easier and more efficient. I prefer Cheato over them

2) They consumes lots of Mg so you will need to dose Mg regularly to keep your Calc and Alk stable.
3) you need to trim of the leaves to prevent it falling into your sump

Why not using chaeto instead of mangrove?

Just my 2 cents

Ohh, okay, ya I would like to keep things as simple as possible.

So maybe stick with the GFO reactor, and throw in some chaeto.

I think I was going to get some from Levi last summer, but had scheduling issues... Maybe I should check with him again.

Thanks for the advice!

Welcome to ghetto reefing 101, im saving my pennies for a none hang-on tank, but there are a few other things in life more pressing right now, but im running two hang-on 110s, a psk100h skimmer and my tank is looking good, if I can do it, I know you can. If you need ghetto advice, I can hand that out, its free!

i hate hang-on skimmer because it creates micro bubble. Best way is to setup just like how Kien does with his tank lol

My tank produces hardly any micro bubble problems, its very nice actually to have that change.. hang on skimmers getting better all the time.

The skimmer is okay, it makes some bubbles but they dissapate fairly well in this little buckets lined with foam that the water falls into.

I have a mechanical filtration system that is like a box that sits under the tank. It works REALLY well, the problem is that I don't, and it gets clogged with crap and throws the nitrates / phosphates right back into the aquarium. The algae are all for this system, but we are at war, so I don't care what they think.

Alright so:

*New filters for the RODI are ordered! Actually getting them for free, my dad needs a bunch for his systems so I hopped on that order haha
*Mechanical filtration system is off the system
*Reactor with GFO ordered!

Now... to wait... till it arrives! Hurry up BRS!!! I love all the video clips they have telling you how things work.

Interestingly, I checked the City of Calgary website for water content and their Nitrite / Nitrate levels are anywhere between 0.01 to 10ppm. They didn't report phosphate.

I had another snail die, the "regular" turbo snail. I have a snail pandemic, and everyone else has a clam pandemic. My clam is fine! But I haven't added anything to my tank for quite awhile, so didn't catch "the bug" or whatevers going on.

Really looking forward to having a cute tank again and filling it up with some more sweet corals!!
