we currently have a coralife aqualight t5 high output dual lamp with 1- 38 W actinic and 1 - 39 w 10 000k.
when we purchased the fixture our LFS said that it would be enough light for our tank, and after asking around ... it seems like we may not have enough. any suggestions?

that's fine for most softies and maybe some low light lps but if you want stony corals you should get more light

we were just kind of hoping to be able to pick pretty much whatever we wanted..nothing overly extravagent.. simple as we are just beginners.. no clams maybe some frogspawn and hammers eventually or some brain

we want to keep things easy, but be able to pick some of the really cool stuff too.
we just added some mushrooms, and some button polyps which seem to be doing well so far... as these are our first corals.

also this fixture.. only has one plug.. (the light we had before had seperate plugs so we could do dusk and dawn) so now we are unable to have our actinics on before our white lights.. is this going to be a problem?

If space is permiting try to add anouther t5 fixture, either a single or double bulb. A 4 bulb would be nice to have good color in your corals.
With a 2nd fixture you could choose what one comes on 1st.
