My sand sifter starfish is missing a leg. No signs of a violent struggle. ANy ideas why?

How long have you had it? Do you have any hermits in your tank?

If it does not appear to be damaged, appears healthy, and is still moving about the tank, it could just be asexual reproduction.
Many starfish have the ability to detach a leg that will regrow an entire new animal.

thanks for the thoughts ohe ideas. I do have some crabs in the tank but nothing that big. Couple of the blue legged ones
