Hey all,

I recently made a video of my 47g rimless aquarium. I haven't seen any other videos like it and I think anyone in the hobby will enjoy. Comments and feedback are welcome.

http://i958.photobucket.com/albums/ae65/AJ_Tsin/Feb%2010%20FTS/PLAYBUTTON-1.jpg (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S__OuJFJN54)

I can post more details about the system if anyone wants to know.

Since completing this video it has been featured on Glassbox-Design (http://glassbox-design.com/2010/3-new-must-see-reef-tank-videos-on-youtube/)

Check it out!

Thanks, for reading/watching hope you enjoy and please rate/comment here or there. Cheers..

Sweet video! I particularly like the way it goes from motion shots to still shots, and how the focus changes in the still shots.

Excellent video. I saw this on glassbox-design and was trying to find out who the owner is. And here you come by Canreef and post about the tank and you're in Canada! :D

So my wife is currently taking a course at the UofC and I generally sit in on it b/c it's related to the work I do as well, but last night was her midterm so I didn't go to the class. However, we live far enough from the university that even though I didn't go to the class I didn't really have time to go home so I decided to just kill some time by finding a computer. I found one in an empty class room and decided to watch this video on the projector :)

Bad picture b/c it's on my camera phone but you get the idea... good times :)

You say your tank is "rimless" but it does have a rim :-)

You say your tank is "rimless" but it does have a rim :-)

I guess you are right all tanks have a rim of some sort.... But the term rimless in aquaria refers to the lack of plastic edging that lines the top most tanks. "Rimless" aquariums are held together mainly by silicon to allow for a clean glass edge along the top.

Google "rimless aquarium" and you will see what i mean. There is a ton of these tanks in Europe and Japan, its starting to catch on over here in N.A.

It's just semantics. If you want to appease him and those people who hate the term "rimless" call it "trimless".

Here are some SLR photos of the rimless setup. The system has been running for one month and everything is still quite stable. However I have had trouble keeping Calcium and dKH up as the larger volume of water volume necessitated an increase in routine doses. I have noticed wisps of algae on the glass and a bit of diatom algae on the sand bed which leads me to believe the aquarium is already producing nitrate again. Because I kept all of the rock 100% submerged in the transfer from the old tank the bacteria survived the move which may have minimized the cycle period. Not sure yet but due to the algae showing up but I think the system may be in the clear as far as re-cycles go.

I will post pics soon of the sump details. Also I just bought a Two Little Fishies Phosban Reactor and am running ROWA this should help keep the system at extremely low nutrient levels.

I have also recently begun dosing tiny amounts of Vodka started at 0.3ml and am up to (0.9 ml) daily as per reccomendation from this article. (http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2008-08/nftt/index.php) This will be combined with MB7 for an Ultra Low Nutrient System. However this means I will most likely have to turn of the ROWAphos and get rid of the cheato in my fuge.

Here are some shots of the plumbing from tank to basement.

http://i958.photobucket.com/albums/ae65/AJ_Tsin/IMG_5533.jpg

The overflow features a silent Stockman standpipe and is plumbed through the floor into the basement sump room making the reef virtually silent.

http://i958.photobucket.com/albums/ae65/AJ_Tsin/IMG_5529.jpg

http://i958.photobucket.com/albums/ae65/AJ_Tsin/IMG_5528.jpg

All the plumbing is one either 1" rigid IPEX pipe or braided 1" Flex Tubing. Ball valves are used to regulate flow to and from the system.

http://i958.photobucket.com/albums/ae65/AJ_Tsin/IMG_5516.jpg

At the sump a "T" joint is used to split the flow. 60% goes into the main skimmer heating and Phosban chambers 40% goes into the fuge this ratio is regulated by another ball valve.

A Mag 9.5 return pump moves the water from the sump up about 7' to the dual adjustable returns.

What camera did you shoot the video with?

Also, since you're already defending the term "rimless" - "cube" implies 3 dimensions measurement the same. What you have there is a rectangular prism. It is a very nice rectangular prism though. :)

Just kidding BTW, don't worry about it. (Although .. MY tank is an "actual cube" at 30x30x30. So there!). But, I don't features on glassbox design, so don't worry, you still win. ;)

Ha,

Everyone is getting technical now eh.

There is something about "AJ's 47 gallon trimless rectanglular prism" that just doesn't have a ring to it.

Ha probably should edit that post. I took a bunch of with my iphone and a bunch with crappy lens on the Rebel all at the same time. Either way they are still cropped and digitally zoomed and look awful so I apologize.

They're all in the same album in Iphoto so sorry for that mixup.

Today I decided to add some DIY LED accent lights. Because of the open concept and suspended pendant it is very difficult to add actinic bulbs without legs on the aquarium or hanging two separate fixtures which would clutter the space. I decided to look for some blue LEDs that could somewhat replicate the function of Actinic fluorescents.

I almost bought Current USA's LED strip light but decided to visit the Auto Accent aisle of Canadian Tire before doing do.

This is what I found and came up with:

These car accent LEDs add-ons have two one watt LEDs per unit and are meant to connect directly to the 12V battery lines in any car. (Why anyone would want these lights anywhere near their car is beyond me)

http://i958.photobucket.com/albums/ae65/AJ_Tsin/LED%20Moonlight/IMG_0699.jpg

With a little basic electrical wiring the 8 LEDS could be connected to a 12v DC adaptor from The Source

http://i958.photobucket.com/albums/ae65/AJ_Tsin/LED%20Moonlight/IMG_0700.jpg

I gathered some tools took down my existing pendant and went to work.

http://i958.photobucket.com/albums/ae65/AJ_Tsin/LED%20Moonlight/IMG_0702.jpg

The LEDs come with strong two sided adhesive meant to stick the lights to the underside of a car or in the glove compartment etc. I stuck these directly on the metal of the Pendant but as this pendant gets quite hot when on I may have to reglue the lights with contact cement. We will see.

http://i958.photobucket.com/albums/ae65/AJ_Tsin/LED%20Moonlight/IMG_0704.jpg

http://i958.photobucket.com/albums/ae65/AJ_Tsin/LED%20Moonlight/IMG_0705.jpg

Once attached, the wires were run under the reflector in the pendant in the same manner the existing wires for the halide bulb were attached. Each led unit has its own +/- wire so I ran all four lines through the light out the back vent and connected them all together with their respective lines at the end. In this case four + lines from each light were twisted together and four - lines from each light twisted together.

http://i958.photobucket.com/albums/ae65/AJ_Tsin/LED%20Moonlight/IMG_0706.jpg

Once all four positives and all four negatives were bunched together they were all connected to a single +/- wire which ran to the adaptor.

http://i958.photobucket.com/albums/ae65/AJ_Tsin/LED%20Moonlight/IMG_0707.jpg

Again only time will tell if these wires withstand the heat inside the pendant. They should be fine as they are only touching the backside of the reflective aluminum and are several inches away from the actual bulb.

The adaptor is a AC-DC Converter that has a switch to choose the Voltage output. The transformer was switched to 12v / 300mA output which is perfect to run all four units a total of 8 LEDs
.
http://i958.photobucket.com/albums/ae65/AJ_Tsin/LED%20Moonlight/IMG_0708.jpg

Once each electrical splice was secured and sealed with electrical tape I plugged it in and was pleased to see all four corners of the pendant now glowing blue.

http://i958.photobucket.com/albums/ae65/AJ_Tsin/LED%20Moonlight/IMG_0709.jpg

As long as you know a tiny bit about wiring and transformers this upgrade is easy to do and is worth it. It definitely isn't as bright as a fluorescent bulb but it looks like it is factory built and adds a bit more color to the tank. I have these LEDS come one one hour before the Halide bulb kicks in and turn off 1 hour after it turns off. You could also use these as moonlights.

http://i958.photobucket.com/albums/ae65/AJ_Tsin/LED%20Moonlight/IMG_5779.jpg

http://i958.photobucket.com/albums/ae65/AJ_Tsin/LED%20Moonlight/IMG_5778.jpg

http://i958.photobucket.com/albums/ae65/AJ_Tsin/LED%20Moonlight/IMG_5780.jpg

The entire upgrade (lights and transformer) cost me $55 CAN as opposed to the $99+tax I would have spent on a clunky LED strip light. A light I would have had to hang somehow polluting the aesthetics of my rimless setup. I think the Current USA ones are definitely brighter than these so it isn't a 100 percent replacement, but for something like a moonlight or dim actinics for those of you who just have pendants this is a perfect fix You could also add several more bulbs as they have tubes, strips, squares etc of leds. Cant say I would ever put something like this on my car but they work great in this case.
