How viable is a 20 gallon sps nano tank with T5s as metal halides are way out of my price range for one lump sum anyway
I think it's a 20g high rimless

what t5 fixture are you looking at using?

something like a sundial would be great for monti's, birdsnests and some acros (slimmers) but make sure you upgrade your bulbs.

but lighting isn't the huge issue with nano's, the key to keeping sps is stability and in nano's everything fluctuated very easily. salinity flunctation is where alot of people struggle so if your planning on runnin a sump add a ato.

Yeah T5's are fine for sps but can you keep the nano stable enough for sps?

There was a guy on RC that did a 20 gal SPS tank and it was freaking amazing too and had T-5\s he was from australia

Very doable. My tank is 20 gallons, and I have plenty of SPS. But as was said before, stability is the key.

Ok so I was planning on getting a ro/di so waterchanges are no biggie a ato prob won't be hard and im open to all light fixtures but i'm wondering if when I do a wc in by bow reef if I dump it in the 20 with the extra ro/di water and cured live rock and sand does that mean I got a cycled tank or will there still be lots of die off. Oh any nano skimmers recomended and if I add a 10 g sump is it still a nano

I have a 16G nano with a mix of SPS and zoas. I have a 6G sump as well.

My light fixture is a mix of MH and T5HO but all T5HO's should be just fine.

You should still cycle the tank simply because patience is the key to putting together a successful nano. Go slow, start simple and then expand.

As for Nano skimmers, I use the BMQQ from Bubble Magus and it's been very good. Others have had great things to say about the new Euroreef nano skimmers and about the Tunze 9002.

As far as cycling goes I figured as much had to ask cuz it sounded like a cycled tank lol but at this point idk I'm just asking making sure I got some info before I go to the lfs Ty all for replying feel free to add to anything as it will be a little while before I do it as I kinda want a dog but we wil see

I would add the 10gal sump just to have increased water volume, easier to deal with fluctuations. just keep up on your Mg, Ca and alk. also dosing trace elements would be another thing to consider.

Biocube 29 are roughly 25 gals, not that much bigger. and amy people have sps in those.

With an ATO and regular water changes you should be fine?

I have a 20G high with 150W MH + 2x96W actinics. This is borderline overkill so your T%s should be just fine. I don't use a sump or skimmer, just water changes are fine. With a little calc/alk dosing my SPS grow like mad.

ok so im looking at 2 aqualife dual t5ho cuz thats what i can get near home, and a prizm deluxe. the skimmer says 18g for sps so if i add a 10g sump is it not good enough? if so ill find somthing else. and lights are 96w is that enough?

I liked my simple 20g sps tank better than my 30g w/sump tank. It was easy to care for. Just water changes, no skimmer. Hang on the back AC 110 filter. I did use one of my MP 20,s for current but its easy to provide current in a 20g. The 110 even did a good chunk of that.

I did put a lot of rock in it though, a personal preference. My 4 bulb SWC T-5 unit provided more than enough light, as the corals grew good but they all browned out. I believe that to be because only one actinic was used and 3 cheaper 10K bulbs. With the proper bulbs, its my opinion the colours would have been better but would have to do it first to see.
