Thanks Ryan, it is coming along nice. I don't know of anyone in this area who has an 8 footer.

We both know someone who has an eight foot tank that's made out of acrylic it's a 340g and the guy who has it is someone we don't get along with and isn't all that knowlegable hahaha I won't say names but we all know who that is lol

"Pick up a few thing's, bought a new red scooter blenny, some more IO Reef Crystals and 2 500ml bags of NP Pellets".

I would be very interested to hear how your NP pellets work out. I've read everything that I can find on them and have just placed my order too.

A little video of the whole tank and down to the sump. Shows the NP pellets in the reactors dancing away, hope this is enough flow threw them.

Interesting idea to submerge the reactors. No worries about leaks there I guess! Looks like enough flow.

That's quite the level drop into your last chamber. You don't have microbubbles?

Holy Hanna!! 8' is a heck of a lot of travel! It took a while to pan the length of that tank  Good thing my computer is nowhere near the tanks otherwise my fish would be wondering why they are stuck in a 6' box..

Looks great, and I'm jealous!

I figured that I had enough room in the sump for the reactor's so what the heck. I did the vid before I did my top off today. Return section is usually 1" - 2" lower then the reactor section but when it get's really low I do get a few bubble's.

YOU JEALOUS!!!!! I thought I would never here you say that ( one with 2 huge tanks 4' apart ). I am the one that is jealous of your tank with all the amazing sps in there. But I do appreciate the compliment, thank Kien.

you had me at 8' .... this thread not only inspires me it gives me future ideas for a tank build 5 year plan. all in all its nice to see how all ppl in love with this hobby come together to help each other out. where a teasing over a clam goes from one tank to another. how a sale of a tank comes at the perfect moment to complete the build. there is more to a build than water,fish,corals,rocks.....friendship memories and dreams.

ok im done being creepy congrat on the 10 k :)

Sorry, I saw blue fish, but looked again... Are those anthias?

So what do you think about having a closed loop? Can you tell us the benefits over traditional methods?

Well Kreskin, they are actually Blue Reef Chromis from what I have been told.

As far as the closed loop I really like it so far. Nice even flow through out the tank. Also noticed that there is less debris on the sand and rock, when I feed the fish what ever food it is time for it does not hit the sand. And there is power head sticking out like a soar thumb.

Aren't chromis and damsels somewhat the same? All I can say is that I have some chromis, AND I HATE THEM!!!

I hope to come over one day to see the setup, withing camping starting this weekend in Triple Diamond, we can get together one day to ride and look at the new setup.

Sailfin tang, a rescue from another tank with Tai's help. I hope with proper care and feeding that his top fin will recover. His is very healthy other wise:

So now the plan is if the birds nest goes well the wife want's me to try the SPS again. First plan of attack is going to do some more fancy aqua scape, get the corals and 6 clams set up and happy, then find some nice relatively cheap SPS to try. So if anyone would like to donate some nice size piece's of SPS to the cause for a small price........... call me.

Do those ones eat algea? I remember reading a past thread a few days ago about someone else who bought one of those... a Purple Nudibranch? and they said it only eats certain sponges....

They sure do eat algea. The pink one has been racing around that tank since Saturday but the purple one is standing guard around what I think are eggs. So I might have a bunch of these to sell soon,. They do eat curtain type's of sponge but so far I have not seen them near my orange tree sponge.

One of my son's decided to do some rescaping for me back in May, started but still sitting unfinished and now he's gone :mmph: How are the nudi's and sailfin doing ?

The Grizz
08-11-2010, 04:46 AM
Unfortunately the nudies did not make it long because of the closed loop flow and got stuck on the intake's about 2 weeks ago but the Sailfin seems to be doing well and might even be growing it's fin back.

Greenmaster

Nice tank, I wish I could have gone 8' but space limitations left me at 6'.
Nudies often are very diet specific and will often die of starvation after not long in a tank... if they survive the intakes/powerheads. There is one kind of Nudie that eats aptaisia and nothing else... so you have an aptaisia problem you get one then it munches them all... no food left so it dies... I have heard of someone growing aptaisia in their refuge and moving a rock up to the DT every week or so... just to keep their nudie alive and keeping the DT clear.
Make sure that when you rescape you take some before and after pics :D
What other fish you plan on getting? Or do you plan on just... not planning  and getting fish when you see one that "fits".

The Grizz
08-13-2010, 01:07 AM
The Nudies that we picked up at Ocean City algea eaters and where doing a great job until they ventured off the glass and onto the sand/rock where the closed loop flow sent them off into the intakes.

For fish I would like to add about 5 more blue green chromis, a powder blue tang, a koran angle and a blonde naso tang if I can find some really small one's

And I have to finish my 67 gal pred tank so I can move my maroon clown, fox face, scribbled rabbit, yellow damsel, blue fin damsel and chocolate chip star fish from there current 30 gal home.

Pretty Cardinal, If you are thinking about picking up another one why don't you wait a bit. My pair had babies, one survived, rest were supper for the tank. The one I have left is a little more than 1/4 inch long and about 3months old now and doing great. I think mine is a male but a bit early to tell yet, and they are hard to tell apart even by experts. I looked at the picture of yours and it looks just like my male. Well congrats on the new addition.

If you want to tell the difference between a male and female bengaii, look at the stomach behind the fins. The female has one thorn, while the male has two.

Also, it is great to hear that yours is eating flake food. Mine won't touch it, unless it is cyclopeeze flake, so I also feed my tank Mysis shrimp, blood worms, and squid.

Well not all of it looks that good  I know for sure that I still have 1 sand sifting star but there should be 2. Also have an orange spot sand sifting goby that move's and cleans sand ALL DAY LONG. He lives under the rock that is covered in GSP so I move it around once in a while to different parts of the tank.

I have changed some of my bulbs to see if things get better as far as growth and polyp extension. Took out my Figi Purple and Super Blue and replaced them with some 12,000K bulbs I have never used.

So now I have a mix of Coral Lite 10,000K, Oddyssea 12,000K and New Gen 14,000K. If it looks like things are improving I will pick up some new / better quality 12,000K bulbs as the Coral Lite and New Gens are only a few month old.

Looking at getting a controller, not sure of what kind yet but it will either be an APEX or Reef Keeper. Picking up a NextReef reactor for pellets from BW and going to convert both my TLF 150's to run carbon.

Grab some ZeoVit additives from Red Coral Calgary as well.

I finally broke down and re did the rock work over the last 2 days. Added loc-line to the returns from the closed loop, so now each return has 3 return ports and I must say I really like the flow now.

Bought a very gently used Snapper return pump for the main return. Going to take out the 1200 gph pump and put this in it place.

Also pick-up a NextReef MR1 reactor for NP Pellets but don't have enough pellets left in my TLF 150 to put in service just yet.

Next items on the agenda is a controller and some new lights. For the controller I am either going with a GHL Proflux 2ex that Ken @ BWA has or the ReefKeeper Elite. I must do a little research on the Proflux first. As for the light I am almost certain I am going to go back to MH with 2 - 48" fixtures, each fixture has 2 - 250w MH 15,000K bulbs, 2 - 54w T5 that I will put in either some KZ Coral Lite or UVL Actinic White bulbs. the fixtures also have 3 dual moon lights each.

Once I have the light's I will have to finish the canopy of the tank as my wife wants me to put a shelf above the tank just below the picture that is hanging on the wall.

So here is a FTS as of today not TOTM worth but doing my best, picture quality is crappy because I had to use my iPhone, wife's camera in the shop and I suck a photography.

A few new additions to the reef in the last week or so.

Added a Powder Blue Tang, could not help myself when I went in to Blue World and seen them. So nice and heathly and eating well. He is a little stressed out for the move but is doing great eating good and out in the open. Picked up another Bangii Card as well, here's hoping I get a mated pair as so as they find out each other is in the same tank:lol:.

Added a McCorsker's Flasher Wrasse from Red Coral Edmonton as well as a nice blue Crocea clam, thanks Steve. Was a little worried about the Flashers Wrasse yesterday when he was just hovering kind of stuck to the overflow. But today when I fed the tank there he was happy and eating great.

Stopped at Aqua Marine ran into Doug and Laurie (what a cute couple those two are) and wouldn't you know it but a little green brain followed me home.

Still have to put the MR1 and the Reeflo Snapper into service and pick-up my GHL Proflux 2ex controller yet plus order my new light's but it is all coming together once again.

Pictures will be coming soon as I get a new waterproof camera.

Greg, If you are getting a Profilux you need the T5's I have and Dimm2 Power bar I have. Dimmable T5's are Frickin AWESOME!!

It's 2 (2x54watt) ballasts with waterproof endcaps and 4x 48" ice-cap reflectors. It might mean building your own rail as opposed to a fixture and mounting a couple of MH reflectors, as opposed to an enclosed fixture but the result is well worth it.

Let me know if you're interested and we can hammer out a price!

That could be interesting. I am looking at getting 2 new fixtures that have 2-250w MH and 2- 54w T5's. I was talking with Steve at RCE and he gave me a neat idea to use 2 of my existing fixture with color only bulb like actinic, Fiji purples and such to add some different color spectrums.

So 2011 did not come in to nice. Around 7 pm tonight the wife and I were sitting down to some dinner and a movie when all of a sudden I could hear running water, looked down at the corner of my tank to see the worst possible thing WATER POURING OUT OF THE CORNER OF THE STAND.

So out come the buckets and the wife goes running to the pool room to grab all the pool towels and the mad dash was on. Managed to shut down the flow, got the return line out of the sump for my reactor and started to empty the sump compartments. Called Terry for some more buckets, him and Josh come out and gave me a hand to get the sump out and to the shop for repair.

Now I have a temp sump (30 gal tank) running with 1 skimmer and my pellet reactor hope it is enough to sustained the tank, too much livestock to lose and the wife would kill me.

Hey Kien, the sump does not run full of water about half but when I shut off the flow it increases to about 3/4 full

Good to know everything is ok.

So for everything is holding up, my new Powder Blue is a little stressed and showing some signs of ich and there is no place here to get a cleaner wrasse either.

I am looking to increase water movement without power heads. Since I have added the loc-lines to my closed loop it has been a big improvement. I have one SPS that I got almost a year ago from lobsterboy and since the closed lo upgrade I have notice more polyp extension and signs of some growth finally.

Nice zoos and PBT there Greg! Make sure you stuff the bajesus out of your pBT with whatever it is he's eating now. I find that you can increase your success rate with them if you feed them heavily at the get go. They are extremely fickle fish and can go on hunger strikes for no apparent reason. If they haven't stored enough calories they can waste away quick. Then they get sick and continue to lose appetite and then all down hill from there sadly. Anyway, not meaning to scare you or anything. I know you said he is eating well so just take advantage of that and try to fatten him up. :)

There is no way that will happen, I have taken the cord and rolled it up, zip tied and tape the prongs over. Just to make damn sure I don't plug it in.

The checker board wrasse is sweet & when he gets more comfortable I hope some more of his colors show. My guy Ryan @ BA got him in and held it for me for 2 weeks until I could get down there.

So today I got the big a$$ skimmer online, just waiting for it to brake in and start pulling gunk out of the water.

Also hooked up my Profilux Plus 2 controller, temp probe online and working nicely as well as the Ph prob. And to my surprise my Ph is just a wee bit high......must correct this asap.

Funny you should ask, my wife asked me when I was going to build a cover after last night. I had the front of my canopy off last night feeding and replacing a few corals that got moved by my huge hermit crap when suddenly my Blue Reef Chromis launched out of the tank and down to the floor. I quickly scooped it up and put it back into the tank. Other than that I have only had 3 jumpers but I will be building a cover out of window screen kits very soon.

I do have one SPS in the tank ATM but I think my problem might be my ability to do regular water changes. We are on a septic tank system that gravity feed to the field not a pump out. But that is going to change this summer when all this FREAKIN SNOW stops & melts.

My A. Humilus, I have had it for over a year and it has never changed other then the one white branch. It fell into nor of my frog spawns but it has fully recovered now.

I'm by no means an sps expert, far from it, but mine are doing pretty darn good. I credit this to doing 20% water changes every 2 weeks without fail. I was a real lazy water changer in the past but ever since I ventured into the world of sps, realized this is something you need to do.

Get some ROX carbon from BRS. BRS is really the only place you can get it from and trust me once you go ROX there is no other you'll go to afterward. I only wish some of our more local vendors would bring it in (HINT HINT ... er, AGAIN, because it's not like I haven't brought this up before).

But Doug is right, get some carbon on there. It's mandatory IMO. Read this for a good description of "why":
http://joejaworski.wordpress.com/2008/05/09/does-a-reef-tank-need-carbon/

Doug is probably also right in that the reason for your SPS troubles are your leathers. In general these two types do not mix well at all. With maybe only a few exceptions you don't really find SPS and leathers in the same reefs in the wild and that probably tells us something.

And it's not just leathers. Softeys in general, macro algaes, leathers are just among the stronger one who participate in allelopathy ("chemical warfare").

You can mitigate this some by using more carbon but there will be a point where it's sometimes better to pick your favourite kinds and focus on that for a single tank. There are not many "mixed coral garden" that last very long and it is because there are just too many interactions going on that we can't really see or do much about.

But yeah, I agree. Start with some carbon and go from there. (See if you can get the ROX http://www.bulkreefsupply.com/store/3-pounds-1-gallon-premium-rox-0-8-aquarium-carbon-1.html ... well worth it.)

Yes I agree ROX carbon is very good however it tends to clump up very quickly so it's life span tends to be shorter because I don't reuse it after taking the reactor apart to change it. I have recently started using the small carbon pellets by Fauna Marin (which I carry) and I think it does a very good job. I may even try mixing it together with ROX to see if it will reduce the clumping.

Sure it will Greg. I mix the ROX with Kent Reef Carbon (aprox 70-30) and it helps stop the clumping.

Interesting. I have not had any issues with clumping with ROX. My only complaint with the stuff is that it's so small and lightweight, it works its way into the sponges of the reactor and thus when I change it out I have to spend a couple extra minutes to work back out of the sponge.

Dependent on flowrate through the reactor maybe?

Between the two tanks I'm running the ROX in a BRS reactor and a TLF reactor. There is no problem with the TLF; the BRS reactor however, does have clumping issues. It doesn't seem to matter what the flow rate, it still clumps. I give the reactor a shake every week or so and that seem to help, but it does require more maintenance than the TLF.

Ah, interesting about the BRS reactor. I've only ever tried the ROX in a TLF reactor and then a MR1 on the bigger tank (bought it originally for pellets but it didn't tumble the pellets as nice as a Vertex reactor so it was just begging to be used for carbon - but it does seem to work nice for the carbon).

Some really nice zoas you have in there I'm jealous! For whatever reason I had issues with many of the first round of zoas I tried but lately they seem to be thriving. Really dig the aussie elegance as well. I'll have to do some research on them but I do want one for the new tank. It's like a nem but without the evil!

I was unsure about getting an elegance myself for some time but when I saw this one at Wei's I couldn't resist especially for the price he gave it to me for. And I must say it is doing great.

No new FTS as of late because my tank is getting so scratched up that it doesn't look good at all. If I can manage to get the front glass clean I will take a few shots.
