return pump suggestions?

Hey guys
So I'm planning up a sump here and am looking at return pump. Quite frankly I haven't a clue as to what I need. I just know it has to be powerful enough to push a 1" tube of water at least 5 feet straight up back into the tank (48G). Anyone have something kicking around that they want to get rid of? Suggestions for something new?

a mag pump would be your best bet from j/l maybe a mag 12 or 18 if u really want lots of current but just to get it up there u could go with a 9 its alot cheaper let me know hoe everything goes.

A suggestion - ask Titus. Perhaps he can get you into an Ampmaster.

"T" off of it, and use the excess flow to generate hydro. ;)

(Seriously, is 48 your total volume?)

I'd be willing to part with my Little Giant 2MDQ for $70 bucks, I think they're like close to $200 new. I used it as a return for my 90 gallon for a while.. couldn't use it on my 42 gallon because my overflow couldn't handle that much power (small overflow). Now I'm just running a powerhead as my return on my 42 gallon. Let me know.. I have no idea what shipping would be. Around $10 bucks maybe?..

It does have a little hummm to it... I don't have an enclosed stand so I can hear the hum. Check one out at your LFS, they'll probably have one running..

So you are getting a sump to, eh? Im just hooking up mine too. Im using a 33 gallon tank, what are you using?

Anyways, I bought a used MAG 18 and it is SILENT. It's incredible, can't even hear it running. And it pumps 1200 gph at 5' head. I don't think you would need a MAG 18, but one of the lower ones might be good.

Hey guys thanks for the replies. Yeh 48 is the volume of the tank. I'm thinking something like at least a 20 gallon sump. I don't really know. I was just going to go get one of those rubbermaid totes to use as a sump and I was thinking about putting in a refugium as well. I was just thinking about all the parts I would need and had some extra money for a pump so I figured I had better get that quick before I spend it on something else tongue.gif

I'd say Mag 9 or there abouts. If you are planning on a rubbermaid sump then that is pretty much your option. A pump you can submerge that is. If you can, get a glass tank, have some baffles made and have the pump mounted externally. Mag 7's and 9's add about 2-3 degrees to tank temp when in sump. If you went external I'd say another option for reliability is a pump in the MD series.

Plus this will let you run your skimmer pump in the sump. Speaking of which. make sure your skimmer pump is in an area in the sump that has a constant level of water. If it fluctuates with evaporation your skimmer will not always be dialed in. it will change how high the foam goes etc due to the change in water pressure on the pump intake.

Well if you use a Rubbermaid, you can still plumb the pump externally. Just use some bulkheads and flexible vinyl tubes. If you are good, you can even get away with fixed PVC pipes too.

I think maybe I'll wait until the next meeting to see exactly what you guys are talking about (I'm very photo oriented). Anyone got any pics of their sump setups? External or internal pumps!
