View Full Version : Nano Tank Contest #3

I've decided the nano tank contest needs a bit of an overhaul. Less rules more fun. Lets see if I can pare it down some. I'm kind of bored tonight so this could be interesting.

Rule #1 Display tank cannot hold more than 20 gallons, this includes the overflow. Your tank doesn't have to be a 20G stock tank but it can't hold any more than 20 gallons of water. Period. If you want to use a larger tank, use it as your sump

Rule #2 No budget. Go out raid that money tree out back and spend your hearts delight. I for one have always been intrigued by the idea of a Bubble King on a 5G nano tank

I stole some guidelines from cprowler

1. Create a sustainable healthy environment
2. Be creative - ingenuity and creativeness will be rewarded.
3. Greener the better – less power consumption and recycled material, aquacultured/captive bred live stock…etc
4. Spend wisely <--not sure about this one after I told you to raid the money tree. But its always interesting (to me) to see what people can do with a "reasonable" amount of money. Spending 500-1000K per gallon to me is just nuts

Ok now to the boring bits:

There is an entry fee of $20.00, which must be received by March 1st to lock you into the contest. These fees will be used for the prizes at the end of the contest. Entry fees are non-refundable. A late fee of $30 will be accepted from March 1st to March 14th for those who are on the fence. After that you're SOL.

Contest begins March 1st, 2010 and ends October 1st, 2010
If you're gung ho, feel free to amass your tank bits and pieces and get started now. Start a tank thread for your contest tank so we can see it's progression as it goes along. Put a link in your sig for all to see! The first post of your tank thread should be a photo of the empty tank with nothing in it (ie. dry). You don't have to start your tank thread immediately, but your tank must have water and rock in it by March 15th and you need to post a photo of it on that date. Keep your thread up to date if you can, everyone loves a tank build thread

During the first TWO WEEKS of each month, post a FTS of your tank on your thread. If you don't update your tank thread you will not be included in the contest, barring major health/life crises which I hope to be PMed about.

At the end of the contest, in October, I'll start a thread showing all of the tanks and their specs, with an attached poll for ALL of Canreef to vote on the winners. A final tank photo will be required by October 1st as that is the end of the contest. If you have difficulties meeting this date, please PM me.

The winner will receive a gift certificate to the Canreef sponsor/vendor of their choice, taken from the entry fees.

Any questions or concerns that cannot be addressed on this thread, PM me.

On a final note, the goal of this contest is to HAVE FUN!! Whee!

I am the opposite... 2010 is the ONLY year where I have yet to make the mistake when writing down the date on stuff... I figure if I've made it this far into 2010 without the mistake I am good to go...

christyf5
01-12-2010, 07:33 PM
Yep you can get started planning and such, go nuts! The actual "start date" is March 1st, meaning you need to have rock and water in it by that date if you get it in before then, more power to ya but remember creativity and design are also parts of the contest

Hey guys, I just amended the rules a bit.

For those of you that are getting started right away (or even for those of you that aren't). Please start your tank thread with a photo of a dry tank (or put it in there somewhere for those of you building custom tanks). Just to make sure we're all on the same page.

And well, we all seem to get just as excited about an empty tank as much as a full one

interesting, So the tank can be cycled by the start date. not to start anything but to assure everything is fair, no livestock before start date?? or can live stock be added?

Christy, can the DT be plumbed into a larger system?

I'm tempted to join in on this one. The first one was a lot of fun. However, I don't think it'll fly with the wife. I just finally transferred my my contest tank to the new house and it had to go to the basement ahah apparently our new place is too pretty for my garbage tank to be on the upper levels ahah

Christy, can the DT be plumbed into a larger system?

I'm gonna say no to this because I think that gives some a huge advantage over others if its plumbed to a existing system. Its just like the tank is already cycled and ready to go as well as having the advantage of stability provided by a larger mature system.
