thanks, I wanted to be able to blast the flow in this tank, so I opted for BB.

I do have an interesting plan for the bottom, but I'll post pictures when it's in progress.

I have all my info and tank parameters on my profile here (http://www.reeftools.com/live/imcosmokramer/).

but I'll go into the main things here.

The system consists of 4 tanks:

1. sps tank 36x24x17
2. anemone tank 24x24x18
3. sps frag tank
4. softies/zoas/lps frag tank

1 large sump
euro-reef cs350
running high capacity gfo and 0.8 rox carbon on a dual BRS reactor
refugium with chaeto

there are two 1262's as returns 1 split to the two frag tanks, the other split b/w the sps tank and the anemone tank.

I dose two part for now (I just moved and have not re-set up my calcium and kalk reactors).

ummm, what else... Oh, i have an Apex sitting in a box, which I need to set up.

I'm going to be using an ATI sunmodule 6 bulb over the sps tank to see if I like it better.

I think that's about it, hope it was not too long winded.

OLD LIGHTING:
I used an Apogee MQ-100 Quantum Meters to measure my tank's lighting intensity. I was really disappointed at the sps tank readings. The sps tank is using an 250w xm 20k bulb on a lumenmax elite. Let me clarify that I am not disappointed in the bulb's performance, but rather in my lighting setup. I now know for certain what I only suspected before, one reflector is just not going to do it. You can see that the reading in the center are great, but as soon as you move out, they drop like crazy.

The solution is either 2 reflectors, or using a T5 fixture.

250W DE XM 20K Lumenmax Elite on a Bluewave 7 about 9 inches above the water

OK, ATI sunmodule is finally up!!!

3 ATI blue plus
3 ATI Aquablue Special

Holy mother of PAR. I don't have time to do the same thing as last time right now, but the numbers are better. I'll get to them asap. Stay tuned.

A quick update about the ATI, I have it at the height I want it now, and I will now add the 2 other bulbs (aquablue special, blue plus) and move it back up. Then move it down again. Part of me doesn't even want to do that, bc what's the point? Maybe I'll get a fiji purple and a pure actinic, and not add anymore PAR.

I also moved one of my vortechs (the back one) to the other side, in order to create better flow, and less competition between the 2.

What are you using for T5 lamps now? Is it 2 ATI AB Specials, 2 ATI Aquablue +, 1 KZ Fiji Purple, 1 UVL Super Actinic?

If that's what you're using, you don't find it too pink?

Right now I'm using 4 AB+, 1 AB special, 1 KZ Fiji Purple and find it's a bit pink for my taste. I'm changing out my lamps this week and leaning toward 2 ATI AB specials, 2 ATI Aquablue +, 1 KZ Fiji purple, 1 UVL Super Actinic.

Well, first off I don't have a meter to say what my par is. My tank isn't the same size as yours so my issues could be completely different. I'm running a 400 watt XM 20K in a 22" squared luminarc reflector over my cube, which is 24x24x22". Some corals that are dead center, and 10" below the water surface are colorful and thriving. While others at the same hight and off to the side are brown but still have polyp extension.

What I've been thinking for the past while is that the reflector may have hot spots which may be burning some of the corals. Thus I have the light quite high over the tank, like 14-16" above the water. Now I'm second guessing my theory, and wondering if these "unhealthy" corals aren't getting enough light. By using your readings with a similar bulb and reflector as a base-line, how much higher do you think the par would be if you had a 400 watt bulb instead of the 250?

In your opinion and based on the readings you posted on this thread, what is the optimum par reading for the corals you have. It might give me a better idea of where I stand with mine.

Thanks,

Danny

first, if a mod is reading this, please move this thread to tank journal forum. Thank you in advance!

what are your phosphates and nitrates at?

If I used a 400w, I assume the ratings would be higher, but the spread would be similar. That's where I think the 1 MH reflector was suffering in my setup. I was fine with the par readings, and if I put 2 mh's on the tank, it would be fine.

How are you controlling the reactor? In particular, how are you controlling the pH of the reactor, and how are you controlling the flow rate? Those are obviously key as you try to dial in the reactor.

Also...you should measure the alk output of the reactor as a measure of the effectiveness of your adjustments. (use 1/2 normal sample size and double your result because you could be looking at Alk as high as 30dkh.) Don't assume that higher flow rate means more Alk/Ca contribution. Lower pH most often increases output, but there is a limit to how low you can go before the media just turns to mush and plugs up the reactor.

Alk measurement x flow rate = reactor output.
