I am looking for a mechanically dead 500 gig hard drive. It has to be a Seagate and no less than a 2 yrs old. Electronics must be good

I do not have one, but am curious, making a laser?

No lasers in a HD. My guess is a DIY controller.

I have about 3 or 4 kicking around, they are not completely dead, but just a bunch of bad sectors -- I'm hoping you are not going to try to replace the controller board to resurrect a dead drive though. Most drives have just too much calibration info stored on the controller that matches the drive. Most of the segate 500gigs have a problem with the controller version as well.

I am trying to resurrect a drive. In need the controller board, but it has to be very close to
1 the factory it was made in
2 when it was made
3 it must be a seagate

I can tell you what to look for in terms of numbers tomorrow

Drive information is as follows:

Seagate sata drive, 500 gig..model st3500320AS Firmware version SD15 Date code 08366 which translates to march 6 2008 Interface board number 7834k6yl made in Thailand.

a few notes:

The date of manufacture is important as they keep modifying the rom program and information on the interface board.

the location is important (where its made) as they can be at different rom revision levels.

the interface revision number is the key.. If we can get a board with that number, the drive will work..
