Hello everyone,

just wondering if anyone has found the Dead Sea Works magnesium chloride hexahydrate that is mention by Randy Holmes in his 2 part dosing recipe in Calgary Area, or maybe a substitute for this part?

Has anyone try doing this? if so, maybe a post of your tank size and how much of each part you use to help some of us getting started on this.

Thanks everyone.

Easiest is just to buy from Bulk Reef Supply. They ship to Canada every Friday via UPS and there is no brokerage fees.

Univar can get it for you. I bought a 50 lb bag of the Dead Sea material from them. They have locations across Canada.

I would go with Chemmaster (http://www.canreef.com/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=67) before BRS. He is in Canada so it will arrive sooner and he is cheaper. I am currently waiting for a BRS order to arrive and with the way UPS is performing I could be waiting a while.

Scott, you should be using the improved recipe (http://www.reefkeeping.com/issues/2006-02/rhf/index.php).

I've been using Absolute Zero Melt Down de-icing salt for almost a full year now. http://envirotech.squarespace.com/meltdown-absolute-zero/ You may be able to contact them to see if they have a distributer in your area.

so Univar sells to the public? do i just call them and order or they have a retail location?

i just found the dowflake at home hardware, they just ordered a bag for me for 24 bucks, i just need to go and see if that is in fact the one being mention by Randy. Once I get everything, it will be time to try, there will be a lot of questions then!!!!

Suppose I didn't want to make so much at once of Randy H-F's stuff, could i take his recipe and change it by using half of everything listed? that should give me the same properties right?

I have some DSW Magflake. How much did you need?

You might want to google Dowflake+Bromine.

hahaha yeah i google it already, seems like the light is turning green very soon, a lot of ppl seem to be doing it and nothing bad so far, and even Randy said it might be ok now. I would love to get some Magflake from you, but your not in Calgary.

I get mine from wallmart  If you go looking though enough of the ice melts you can usually find one that is just a bucket of mag-chloride and nothnig else (except probably a little contaminate) but I have been using it for about 1 year now without trouble. and 20lbs is about $6.

I also hit the pool place for my dowflake. It's used to increase calcium hardness in pools. Somewhere about $4-$6 per lbs.
I can always find calcium chloride in the driveway-melt. But they always add urea and other colorants

man oh man, what else doesn't walmart have these days???
maybe they will bring back the fish department and bring in marine fish too.

But thanks for the info, i'll go look into that too.
