View Full Version : MMAX's 100gal
This tank's been about a year in the works. Had my 20gal for a little less than 2 years and it's been trouble free. This summer my wife and I had a new addition to the family, our first daughter and the rest of the summer and fall consisted of digging a 2000gal pond/waterfall in my backyard. Being December I thought it was time to get this project started again. The tank was built last January by a company who shall remain nameless. The workmanship was good but that was the only good thing about the experience (BTW it wasn't a Canreef sponsor who built it). Rimless 100 gallon constructed out of half inch glass 48" X 22" X 22", Eurobraced with an internal overflow. Two 2.5" drains and two 1.75" returns.

Built the stand, painted and laid down half inch styrofoam.

The sump is my old 55gal I used to use for FW, baffles were installed by Red Coral. I was originally planning to put the sump under the tank inside the stand but there was hardly any room for maintenance. I'm going to construct a sump/control room in the space under my stairs and plumb the tank through the wall.

Other parts consist of an Aqua-Medic skimmer and an Oceanrunner 3500 return pump. More pics to follow as I continue with build...

Ah....the pm makes sense to me now:lol: looking like a good start
A package arrived from UPS yesterday. Ordered a Sunlight Supply 8 bulb Tek light from J & L. Came in 3 days, would have been here in 2 but there was a 1 day delay due to some crappy weather. Everything arrived in one piece but I'm missing one V-hanger. Hopefully they'll send me another one.

Went to Red Coral and discussed with Kevin my bulb set-up for what I'm planning on doing (softie / LPS, clams and possibly a few SPS).
His suggestion was...
Blue Wave
Fiji Purple
Coral Life 10,000K
New Generation 15,000K

Just set the fixture on top to see the light but I'm probably going to hang it if I can find some celing joists to drill into.
I had no idea how good this light was so I put it over my 20 gal...WOW!

Sweet set-up. Can't wait to see it up & running.

Woo... don't hold out on us now. I'd love to put a pond/water feature in my backyard someday. Lets see all your hard work!!

Go to Alberta Aquatica under "Ponds". I documented the whole thing there. Did a lot of work on it but there's still a lot to do.
A few plumbing pictures. It's almost ready for water, I just need to pick up a RO/DI unit.

Thinking about raising my sump up. I'll build a 2 X 4 frame and bring it up 2.5"

She's finally up and running. Found one small leak on my drain which is a real p*** off cause I was super careful putting everything together. Tried to seal it with silicone last night but I didn't get it. Any help on how to seal it would be appreciated. Like I said, it's a real slow drip but I'd like a leak free system. Anyway, a few more pics...

Wow! What a gorgeous setup. It looks so good.
Thanks Kelly. Looks like the leak stopped. Maybe the salt crystallized and sealed it up??? Salinity and SG are good, just waiting on a pump so I can fire up the skimmer and add the rest of my rock.

looking reat ,however sorry to bust your bubble the check valve works alot better when its in the vertical flow. the gravity of the water will close it you may get a neg result that way.

As per my plumber friend who did my tank, the check valve should be near the pump, I can't remember why, but there was a reason.
I like the setup though.
Don't matter if it works or not although I really don't think I'll have a problem with the way I have it. There's plenty of room in the sump if it ever fails.

hey where's all the update shots, come on man. nothing new yet:biggrin:
Just got my computer back after it crashed. As of now the tank's aquascaped and it's started it's cycle. I'll have some new pics soon.
A few pics, added the rest of the rock and sugar sand and aquascaped.

Wanted to go with a single mound in the center to maximize swimming space, I plan on getting a smaller tang (Yellow or Scopas) eventually. Right now the tank is cycling and getting a bit or diatom growth on some of the rocks.

Hey man, How are you liking the new lights? and you must have some new pics, any fish in that thing yet.
Lights are good, I changed out the fiji purples for super blues. No fish yet, 7 snails, 1 hermit and a couple of corals from my 20gal. You'll have to come and check it out one of these days.
So after adding my 6 new snails on Sunday, tested my water again today. Ammonia spike (0.2ppm). Hopefully this kick started my cycle because it never really happened earlier. Decided to come up with a possible stocking list, comments, suggestions, good or bad...
Kole tang
Green or yellow coral goby
Sand sifter goby (will come out of my 20gal if I can catch him)
2 Zebra dartfish
Royal or blackcap gramma
Blue forktail
Some type of fairy wrasse
My 2 ocellaris clowns will stay in my 20gal, the female is quite aggressive and hopefully they'll breed some day.
As for inverts...
Shrimp of some kind (skunk cleaner, fire, peppermint or coral banded)
Porcelain and pom pom crabs
A few more snails for clean up
Crocea or maxima clam
My rock had loads of copopods, feather dusters and brittle stars so I'm covered there. After some thought, the set-up will be SPS dominated with a few LPS/softies thrown in.
A few new pics...

Been quite a while since I've updated my thread, so I've put up some new pics. After losing 3 fish to marine velvet my tank has been fishless for 1 month. My surviving fish have been doing fine in my 20 gallon, so in a couple of more months hopefully they can go back into their bigger home. Added this piece into my sump. Cheaper than a pair of phosban reactors and I had it laying around anyway. Running carbon and phos-zorb bags through it.

Haven't updated for quite some time. Started dosing ProdiBio May 7/11 so I want to document my coral growth before and after. The only thing I've done before I started ProdiBio was changed from I.O. salt to H2Ocean in the new year and began regular 20 gal water changes every 2 weeks.
This ia a frag of blue polyped birdsnest I got 1 year ago. The growth on this piece has been amazing since changing salt. Makes me mad that for the life of me, I can't get a good pic of it.
