View Full Version : Tufa rock as base rock
I was in Big Al's (yeah i know...) looking for dryrock. They sold me on using tufa rock (calcium carbonate) as a base rock.
One guy i deal with has told me that this rock is typically used in freshwater for some reason i cant recall.
Do you guys and gals see any issues with using this rock?
Thanks

too crumbly
I used it when set up my first tank, seemed solid an eventually covered in coralline.

Lots of people use it and then seed it with a bit of live rock.http://www.bulkreefsupply.com/store/brs-reef-saver-dry-aquarium-eco-rock.html

It is boulder-ish, which makes it harder to stack and stay stable.

Watch the demo movie in the link. That's what they like about the stuff they have as it's very easy to stack.
I guess its like live rock. You take what you get and do the best you can.

That does not look like the ones they're selling at BA though. looks something like this, They're very porous so I have them in my fuge but not my main tank. http://www.google.com/products/catalog?q=tufa+rock&oe=UTF-8&cid=4396455155013625945&sa=title#p

Yeah, thats the rock that BA is selling. I have a few lbs of it, which is a surprising amount compaired to live rock.
I think that i will do as BLOODASP has and toss it in the sump (once i build one)
Thanks guys
