Just asking for opinions re: the best wood material I should use for my aquarium cabinetry to be built shortly. Nothing structural, just want it to look good, help in muffle noise and stand up to any salt spray, etc.

I was thinking a stained Maple or Oak......is there a good, better, best I should be using?

The choice of wood for the trim of your aquarium cabinet is strictly your choice. It should compliment any other woods within the room, like coffee tables etc. Most hardwoods will have similar strengths and durability.

I have used Oak with a Brandy stain and a clear Topcoat to prevent water marks.

Whatever wood you choose be sure to stain it and put a water resistant clear topcoat on it for protection.

One piece of advice I can add is if you do go with oak, use a grain filler to seal the wood pores prior to your top clear coat so if you do spill salt water it will not get into the pores and dry leaving white marks.
