Hey everyone
just wondering what people think about using T5 lighting over a 18 inch deep clam tank.
will this be enough lighting for them or must I use MH?
thanks in advance

What t5 fixture are you talking about

With enough T5's over the tank I think it would be fine.

I've kept clams on the sandbed in a 24" deep tank lit soley by T5s and they all did just fine.

Only reason i asked what fixture is because asking can t5's keep clams, yes and no. Some fixtures supply enough light for all species while others done. Saying yes to t5's will work, a person can be misinformed and purchase like a 2x54watt thinking this will be enough

Fishytime gave a great example of an answer, listing what fixture he is using. perfect

I went to a friends place with the same lighting I am using , Giesemann T5 HO actinic and aquablue+
2x39watt for a 40gallon aquarium

Squamosa's under these bulbs have still grown awesomely and are huge. I've had one in my tank for a few weeks now and it's happpy as ever

Depends on the kind of clam as well. I had 3 Croceas that grew well ranging from 4-6 years and none of the 3 made it after my switch to a 5-bulb T5 system.

Ya there are a lot of factors that can shift with different bulbs and such, best bet is stick to one that is a little more tolerant light wise

I know of at least one person that has successfully kept clams under T5HOs. He had a 4 x 24W with individual reflectors, and successfully kept derasa and maxima clams in the upper half of the tank... I don't think I would try this with croceas though, I understand they need stronger light.
