And so the upgrade begins.....

Well I truly thought that I'd be happy with the 72 G Bowfront - big enough for me I thought! But...A recent house move allowed me the perfect opportunity to "upgrade"!

I figure since I've never really done a tank journal, I will try to for this tank.

I purchased a "used" 144G Half Circle Tank. The tank came fully stocked with approx 150lbs+ of Live Rock, MH Light fixture, Calcium Reactor, Skimmer, ATO, etc etc etc...

Dimensions of the tank are 57.5" X 29" X 29"

I was really looking for a bowfront but this one was a deal that was truly way too good to pass up. And I still get the "curved" look so I went for it. This tank is MUCH larger than I was looking for. And has already proved to be abit more challenging than I thought it would be.

I picked it up today and it was originally owned by someone who did NO tank maintenance on his own (hired someone to maintain it) and knew VERY little about the tank at all. The tank tear down was purely my own responsibility with NO help from owner. Thanks to family we got the job done but not without a whole lot of effort! The sump was not removeable and could not move the stand with it inside so we had to completely take the stand apart to move it. Way more work for everyone. PLUS this tank is HEAVY!!!

But we got it home.
Liverock is temporarily in rubbermaid bins and fish have been sold except 1! I kept the coral though most are in bad shape and nothing to get excited about.

Here's a couple pictures of the tank empty. I need to have a sump built since the existing sump is not adequate. I hope to have this done within a week or 2 and move on to adding water! Need a little help from a friend (Fishytime) on getting this thing plumbed properly and we shall be ready to roll! I will need to re-cycle the tank before I can transfer the contents of my 72G into it. Anxious to have my tank back since my Mom has had the tank at her house while we moved houses.

Definately tough to take pictures of the curved tank!

Good luck with the journal  I will be following it..

thats going to be a sweet tank
now that you have a bigger tank you can have more fish and corals etc
what is in it for lighting ?

Carmen
11-09-2009, 02:30 PM
Thanks everyone!
Yes, curved glass doors on the stand too.
I have an Aquaspace Fixture 2 X 250W MH with PC's that came with the tank. I am not really sure I will be excited about the lighting since I think I will miss the color of the
T5's alot but we will see. I am thinking the 6 bulb Tek won't be quite enough light since it's 30" wide and deep.

And for the skimmer...It came with a ETSS Downdraft skimmer which I know very little about. Has some great reviews on RC but sounds abit "touchy" to set up initially. My 72G skimmer is a Turboflotor so I don't think it will be enough for this. Don't have $ to buy a new skimmer for quite awhile so one of these will have to work for the time being.

I am sooo excited now that it's sitting in my family room! Dreams of aquascaping all night! ha Ha! And already can't wait to add to my collection!!! Eyeing up a HUGE Elegance coral at work! But I guess I should really get it plumbed first!!!

I knew you would upgrade and it sure looks like you've made a nice choice.

Thanks!

Leah I am just trying to figure out the largest sump that will work for the space in the stand. Kinda tough to deal with the curved stand and the curved doors so I am VERY limited for width of the sump. Looks like about 12.5-13" and not sure on length yet??? Going to make a cardboard replica today to see what I can get away with.
I am using an external pump and possibly an external skimmer so that does help. Want to be sure to incorporate a proper fuge this time as I was unable to do so with the 72G. Made a makeshift with eggcrate.

And Mike - It didn't come with a step ladder but I have one that I am sure will be a permanent fixture beside the tank!

It didn't come with a step ladder but I have one that I am sure will be a permanent fixture beside the tank!

Even us tall guys use them don't feel bad! I found a nice advantage to offset the fact that I lost an extra 7" of my livingroom to an external overflow was the ability to store my ladder behind my tank. My wife didn't exactly see the tradeoff as equal however.

Not too much to update yet but things are in the works...

Ordered my new custom sump from Kevin at RedCoral yesterday along with my brand new Vertex Insump 180! Whohooo! Didn't plan on ordering a new skimmer but things just worked out this way. Easier to plan the sump around the skimmer now. Kinda excited! Special thanks to Doug for helping me figure out the best way to work this set-up, plumbing and sump! Much Appreciated!

Sump will be 40" long by 12.5" wide by 18" High with a
10" Fuge incorporated! Yay since I never had a proper fuge in the 72G. Wish I could computer draw one of those schematics but that's beyond my technical abilities!

Your welcome Girly....hopefully we can get this thing running for you so you can get your tank back.....now that Ive seen the tank in person Im positive its gonna be "da bomb"....I think you made the right decision about the skimmer....no chance of flooding and opens up more room in the stand....

Thanks guys!
I would LOVE to have it full of water!! Just waiting for the sump and then we can get moving. Hopefully this week sometime.
Aquascaping will be fun! Not sure exactly what I will end up with - that's what makes it so fun! Would like lots of caves, overhangs and try to not crowd it up too much. Would like to leave some sand showing since I lacked that in the 72G - just no space in there. Also would like to try not pile on the back wall and leave some swim around the back space. Haven't planned on using PVC or anything but we shall see. May be abit complicated since half of my rock is at my Mom's in the 72G. May need to raid that tank for a few key pieces and do some switching around in the end...

So rock is in(or some of it anyways)!!! And we have light!
Put on the MH fixture to try out. (And moved the cords out of the way for you Kien!

I have waaaayyyyy too much rock! I sifted through the 2 rubbermaid bins and pulled out some larger pieces to try some aquascaping. I still have a rubbermaid 3/4 full and 100lb of live rock in my 72 gallon!!

Attempted to shape it abit just to get some ideas and fought with it for 2 hours. Leaving it alone for now until I can pick up a few more key pieces from the 72Gallon. Really want to keep it a little more open which I have already determined may be challenging!

You could seriously do a ton with just the piles you have now. Unless a person is obsessed with making a million little caves and arches (that fish never seem to use when you're watching) then that layout would work great!

I'm very impatient. My build took a long time but EVERY step of the way when I either had money or finally took something into my possession...well I would work on integrating/finishing that part of the build without pause! I'm sure most of my build took place after midnight.

That stand looks nice. I think you need some blue leds recessed way in the back so the glass panels glow a bit!

Thanks guys.

Finally clear today. Was going to run an ammonia and nitrates test to see if I was getting much of a cycle but I realized I have all of my test kits at my Mom's. May run into Red Coral since it's just up the road tomorrow to check it out. Looks good so far, plenty of snails and stars crawling around.
Hope to go pick up the additional rock pieces from My 72G in another day or 2 depending on the nitrates. Then I can finish up the aquascaping.

Its gonna be sexy! I love the dual over flows with the gap in the middle. It would be perfect for a frag wall, or a number of other cool applications. If I had a tank like yours I'd put my caps in the middle. Any thoughts on what you'll do with that space?

I think it's kinda a neat little spot too! Not sure what exactly I will do but thought it could showcase a nice piece. Have abit of a pedestal type formation in there now. Time will tell as to what ends up in there!

Carmen

Tested nitrates and they are at zero.
So I picked up a couple pieces of rock from the 72G to finish up aquascaping. Wasn't quite as easy to steal from the 72 as I thought since it's pretty jam packed with coral so moving stuff around is tough! Just grabbed 2 rocks that I wanted and may be one or 2 others that I can change around later once the transfer happens. Had to take a few corals back too since I just have no room to keep them in the 72G. Nothing that is too demanding just some big easy corals, taking up space. Corals actually acclimated really well.
So the aquascape for now consists of 2 formations. One with a small "tunnel" through for swimming/hiding or the shrimp cleaning station like in the 72G! I wanted to leave a clear area through the center so you got a feeling for the true depth of the tank. Ofcourse not 100% happy but am going with the basic structure anyway. Small rocks ontop will likely be exchanged for coral pieces.
Also started adding sand today. Will take me a couple days to add the sand since I just haven't had a whole lot of time. So gonna be looking at a cloudy tank for awhile...

Sand settled, finally relatively clear. Sand was cleaned and reused and was still a little smelly even after extensive cleaning. Nitrates up to 5-10 but not bad considering.
Hard to get a good picture of the aquascape but whatever. It will look completely different covered in coral anyway.
Excuse the cords and extra powerheads. Need to buy some new powerheads eventually.

Well, started messing around with the aquascaping again since I wasn't really loving the right rock wall and wanted to have more space infront. Created a V wall instead with a direct path down the center to the back wall. Really LOVE it because it creates much more depth!
Tank is abit cloudy so I will take pics tomorrow!

Starting to hate maintaining 2 tanks 20 minutes apart. The 72 has started to show some high nitrates (40!)..ugh! Combination of messing around rocks, removing some rocks(biological filter), skimmer not skimming properly, and Mom being a little too generous on the feedings. Brought it down a touch with a WC and fixed the skimmer. CUT the fedings too. Hopefully it settles down!

144G is doing well. Starting to see the ugly diatom bloom already. Plumbing and sump still on hold.

Hope to pick up the livestock this week so all my fishies are home for Christmas...! (What can I say, I miss them!)

I can handle wonky....now kinky would be...well....maybe not so bad:lol:... If we were doing the plumbing from scratch we would have done some things differently, but we needed to somewhat work with what was originally there...

Pictures through bent glass really do no justice to the tank....looks waaaaaaaaaaaay better in person*mutters to himself quietly* "still think it could use that bridge"

So my kinky plumbing is all up and working tonight. Transferred over all of the corals and one anemone tonight. Things look happy so far. Messed around with the skimmer abit as I had to create a riser stand for it. And that is enough for one night. Need to do some fine tuning and transfer the fish - perhaps tomorrow... Fine tuned the skimmer abit and finally got it producing foam. Having some pretty nasty microbubbles in the display??? Hoping the need to work their way out as the system settles in?? Air in the lines??? Anyway, other than that, everything is running well. Corals all look pretty good. They are just tossed in at the bottom to acclimate them to MH lights so no real neat organization yet. Still some nasty green hair algae growing! Turbos are eating it ...slowly. May need to rent a seahare in abit!

Well, fish transfer done...and it wasn't quite as smooth as the first move. Lost my Flame angel!! Not sure exactly what happened but a rock may have actually fallen on her. However...while all of the other fish either looked not happy or barely alive, most are swimming abit. Dori is looking mighty stressed but is checking things out somewhat. Royal Gramma is fine, since I moved her in her "home" so she is comfy already. Copperband looked dead but is actually swimming now. Haven't seen the mandarin, cleaner wrasse or the goby. Clowns aren't even fazed! Just protecting their nem - which is looking quite unhappy so far. Shrimp pair are alive but one didn't look so good in the bin so not sure if he will pull through.
Fingers crossed for a positive end to a very stressful move for my fishies!:sad:

Little update...
Fish and corals are doing super! Added an incredible blasto and a super pink Strawberry Crab (my 3 yr old daughter named "Pinkalicious")- both early Christmas presents from a Friend!
And...would you believe I hooked up my aquacontroller by myself! I had attempted twice before and had pretty much come to the conclusion that I would NEVER hook this thing up (unless I convinced Doug to come over and do it for me!) Was too complex for me!! But I had to wait for my Mom today at the hospital while she had some minor surgery so I took it with me and found a seat near a plug in and programmed it while I waited! No distractions, no kids! WHOHOOOOO!

Skimmer is skimming fantastic and green hair algae bloom has ceased followed now by some diatoms. Still have insane microbubbles...not too sure if there is anything I can do with that.

My Mom actually took down the 72G and cleaned it out on Saturday (Mom's Rock!)! So I am cleaning up the remaining pumps and skimmer and the 72G is no more!

Carmen, do you have the AC out where you can see it (probably not, with the little ones huh)? I found knowing and seeing what my ph was all the time was a little unnerving...whatcha got it programed to do?

Hey Doug,
I have it temporarily laying on the floor in a mess of wires!:redface: Actually the kids know the tank is SUPER OFF LIMITS!
It's working but not all neat and tidy quite yet! I don't have the ph monitor set-up yet, have to get the recalibrating liquid for the probe yet. Still sorta playing around with it. Trying to figure out a light schedule that I am happy with. I am finding the temp swing kinda excessive so I am not 100% sure that the heater part is working??? Swing from 25.5 to 27.7???
Going to hook up a fan to run when the halides are on and heat creeps up, already programmed it in just haven't had time to set it up. Nothing too complex programmed in but it's a start.

JDigital
12-24-2009, 12:37 AM
Wasn't it ME that brought over the probe?!?

As for the temp swing, that is odd. I had MH on my shallow cube (which you would think would fluctuate easily) with the controller keeping track of temp, and the controller kept the tank between 26.0 - 26.5C. Never needed a fan to keep temps in check.

Being that your tank is in the basement, MUCH larger water volume, external return pump.. etc etc (see where I'm going with this? ) What do you have the actual heater set at?

Ya, Josh it was you who brought the probe:wink:!

Ya I am going to get a second tonight to go over my program again and take a good look at the heater and such. So yours was set 26-26.5 then on the controller?
Doug too what is your heat program set to?
I think I had mine set to 26.0 to 26.5 as well? So I shouldn't see so much of a swing then right? Right now my temp is at 27.0. And lights only came on at 11:30am.

Actually luckily we have spotted Pinkalicious most days! Very cool crab indeed!

Doug does your tank temp remain fairly close to desired temp with the exception of summer etc. I have the settings as well with fan coming on when temp hits26.7 and MH going off when ....etc but it just seems to swing a heck of alot from 25.5 to 27.1 yesterday and this am. Trying a different heater today.

fishytime
12-24-2009, 02:04 PM
My temp does swing a few degrees too.....you basically have a few hundred watts of heat on top of your tank now, so you will get temperature swings when the lights are on....kinda unavoidable unless you run a chiller.

JDigital

Carmen
01-07-2010, 08:05 PM
Thanks Chase31!

So have made some minor changes to the aquascape. Decided to take fishytime's advice and place a bridge across the two structures. I like the look of it and it will look even nicer with CORALS all across the top! Ofcourse I will go broke filling this tank! I have ALOT of space to fill! Not complaining...since I am sure it will be full before I know it and I'll be wishing I'd gone bigger!

Looking to add some T5's to supplement the MH since I find the color too white. Tried my 6 bulb Tek and they were a really nice color but much too dim. I was sure to have nems crawling to the top with the Tek lights. Just a little too deep for the 6 bulb. Guess I have to sell it.
Still not sure about the flow in the tank, might try one more K4. I am having some real problems cleaning the curved glass. I got lazy and let some green algae accumulate on the bottom of the glass and all the "blades" just don't work on the curve. I physically cannot reach the bottom edges. My magfloat/Easyblade is a tad worn out so I hope that a replacement will do the trick or I may need to HIRE someone with really long arms to clean my glass! HA HA!

My most recent additions include a Purple Tang, a Red Scooter Dragonet and a Red Brain on Boxing Day! I have always LOVED the Purple Tangs but was hesitant to get one since they can have aggressive personalities and ofcourse are sensitive to ich. But who can resist a BOXING day sale of 40% off and a purple tang that had been at Red Coral for a couple months and was incredible and FAT! He/she adjusted immediately to the new tank and has taken to swimming with the Regal and PESTERING my Copperband (Same body shape). They should work it out though.

Tank looks great Carmen. I use a tiger shark algae free magnet with the acrylic pad on it to clean my tank and it works great. My glass isn't quite as curved, but I think it would work still, just make sure the acrylic pad covers the edges. I also have a mag float but never use it as it's not a strong enough magnet to get the corners of the tank good. They are expensive, but worth it.

Your tank looks really good. I know that you can not get a good pic of this tank as i have the same one. You really have to spend the money on a good algae magnet as the cheaper ones don't work. This is the one that i have http://www.jlaquatics.com/product/cl-mre02f/Algae+Free+Hammerhead+Float+Cleaning+Magnet.html it comes with relacement pads and I have had mine for about 2 years and have yet to replace the pads.

2 New additions...picked up a Red-Striped Skunk Goby this week and another Flame Angel last week from RC. Just couldn't resist! I miss my flame angel so much and the Skunk's are such a neat looking fish and I've never seen one before.
Brought home the skunk goby, acclimated him, put him in and he INSTANTLY JUMPED! Jumped right into the overflow..!!!!!! Then he proceeded to try jumping out of there and landed on the little 1/2" slit between the overflow and tank (hard to describe) that runs the full depth of the overflow and just as I go to scoop him off, he wriggles down the slit! NOW WHAT? I can't even shine a light down there it's so narrow. Tried to scoop him out with wire, sticks, you name it! Eventually gave up. Checked on it one last time before bed only to find the little dude back in the overflow! Managed to scare him back to the top where I scooped him into the tank. AND.......wouldn't you know it.....he tried jumping again! I managed to corral him to the bottom of the tank where he vanished under the rocks hiding with the gudgeon pair. What an ordeal!
So the little guy showed up for feeding 24 hours later. He has been out and about on occasion and hides out with the gudgeons, which I thought was abit weird. They are similar shape and I thought they might chase eachother but not so. He is about 4" long and almost eel like. Quite an active fish. I will hold my breath as to how long this little guy stays put without jumping again...may not be so lucky next time! Hoping the 30" keeps him satisfied and with less reason to "skim the top"!

Well I added a 2 bulb T5 fixture to supplement the MH. I just haven't liked the color with just the MH's. Too white even abit yellowish. I find the coral colors somewhat dull.
T5's have added some much needed blue...perhaps abit too much and I will play with the bulb choices later. But...I am much happier with the colors. The coral colors appear much brighter and the greens, even oranges are much brighter. Ofcourse I have a hard time trying to capture the true colors with my camera settings but this does basically show the difference.
(Thanks Kev for getting me a fixture so quickly!)

Just realized my GSP rock fell down in the back when I looked at the pics...damn...guess I gotta go get wet to fix it...

Mine is just stacked...I will epoxy it to stablize it in spots...I am procrastinating a little on that.

Flame Angel is my Favorite fish!(Well I say that about alot of them:wink:) They are 50/50 as far as reefsafe goes. Some are coral nippers - LPS usually so it is a chance I take for the love of the fish. They get along with most fish but can get some real attitude. Usually one of the bossier fish in the tank and can harrass newcomers. I haven't looked up which fish you have but I would think they get along with anything other than other dwarf angels...sometimes more than one type can be in one tank...a large tank perhaps... Great fish!

Ya.. if you are needing something up in the Korallia 5 range I think you are better off looking elsewhere. Starting at Korlia 5 (6,7 &8), they are all labeled as Korallia Magnum and for good reason, they are frakking huge! For the same (or even smaller) footprint you could get something with much better flow like a Tunze 6100 series or Vortech. In fact, if you got one of those you might find that they can even replace two or three of your existing powerheads.

Little update...and snapped a few pics.

So after the Skunk TileFish carpet surfed...I went and got another one!:redface: So I decided to build a cover for the majority of the top to decrease the chances of losing another. I procrastinated a few days...and wouldn't you know I found my NEW Skunk in the overflow! So...I built myself a mesh cover. With the curve it is a little awkward so I opted to leave a small curve open in front - kinda handy for feeding anyway. (And yes I know...the fish will likely find that small spot if they are going to jump...but I figure my chances have to be better with most of it covered.) So there's little me...cutting metal screen door side pieces with a hacksaw all by myself at 10:00 at night...but I got the job done! I may procrastinate...but when it comes to doing the job...I am determined! Had some sore hands and arms the next day.
Here's a pic of the finished cover on the tank.

I also have decided to give some SPS a go...I have alot of space up top to fill and I just don't know what else I can put up there other than SPS...so SPS it is. We'll try a few easier pieces and see how it goes. Picked up a couple of Frags from Scott (Thanks Argentiner). Tried to get pics but they are darn near impossible through the curved glass...gotta get an underwater camera or somethin...

Thanks! Found it in the garden center of Home Depot. It's called Bird Netting or Bird Dfence. (might be harder to find in the winter) Cheap too!

All your little fish look so FAT healthy and colorful! I can't get over how much awesome the tank looks after such a short period of time. Rockwork is nice and it looks like a really interesting tank to park in front of. Nooks and crannies galore.

I think you're palying with fire with those gaps in the netting. I have nothing to base this off but I think fish are more likely to escape near perimeters as they come up the glass. Maybe not but...

Thanks Brett! I tend to overfeed ALOT!

Actually if you are right then I should be covered! The top of the halfcircle has an insert thing that actually edges all along the glass squaring it off (actually makes for limited accessibility in the tank) so if they follow the glass and "up" they would hit the edge. I know I will still have the odd jumper...but it helps.

Super EXCITED about my new additions today!
I have been eyeing up these guys for a couple weeks now and today I just couldn't resist! I LOVE my Skunk Tilefish so much...great personality, active fish! So I got two more TILEFISH! Kev brought in these Blueface Tilefish and they are so amazing! They are huge! Only thing that was holding me back is that they are best purchased in pairs...I didn't really want two...but......I Caved!

Acclimated with my new "Fish Acclimation Dripset" (Thanks Scott!)...worked great by the way...and 10 minutes later these guys are eating like PIGS! Getting abit of a hazing from Dori and Angelina but otherwise fitting in just great. These guys are out swimming the whole time. They are great! Bigger of the two is around 5"!

Tank has been running great. Still having microbubbles issues...drivin me crazy. One of these days I'll drain the sump and remove the pump and take it apart to see if that helps. Diatoms algae bloom has almost disappeared. Something kinda crazy going on with my skimmer...haven't figured it out yet but it keeps freakin out and overfoaming all over the place!
Other than that I have been pretty darn happy with my new upgrade!

Same personality...straight to the top but they didn't jump..I think they are too big! The cover was on too so maybe that helped deter the jumpin!

Stinkin skimmers hey Leah! Not excited about taking apart the pump...procrastinating again...

Thanks Mike! BlueFace TileFish are the Blueish ones. Skunk Tilefish is the redstriped one from a couple weeks ago. BOTH COOL FISH! Neat they can be kept in groups!

Bad day........do you ever feel like when it rains...it pours?!....like you would have been better off...just hiding all day........ (if only I could!) Day starts out crappy with some personal stuff getting me down...then I come down to the tank to find a crispy fish on the floor,, see a couple fallen corals and go to pick them up knocking down two more in the process, fill the top up tank...and miss all over the floor, watch my Flame Angel "pick" at my brain coral which is already dieing...and now I spill skimmer crap on the carpet...ugh...think I will not look at the tank anymore today for fear something else might happen....

My luck with the Skunk Tilefish is 0 for 2! I won't try another one. Even with the cover the little bugger found a way out. Hope that the other two new tilefish stay put...they don't seem as jumpy but that could be wishful thinking on my part.

Well I didn't fall in...soaked to my waist though! $#@* I hate epoxy! I knew I shoulda waited til tomorrow....crappy stuff just wouldn't stick to anything! Even now after half a stick of epoxy I don't think anything I stuck will stay stuck!!!
Had to "fix" the rocks that shifted which always looks like an easy thing to fix til you move a rock...end up "fixing" about 8 rocks!!

Sorry to hear about the rotten news Carmen...

I've worried a few times with a FULL skimmer cup about spilling on the carpet.. Typically wrap it in a "skimmer only" towel but even then worry about watching my step.. lol
