I'm from Ontario here... sadly I have perhaps come across maybe 4 other people from Ontario on this site.. most are from BC and Alberta.

I am glad someone is trying to do something to get more active Ontario members on here. I think it is great

I'm not sure that it matters as I don't care where help comes from when I need it, out west or right here in Ontario.
Also, I just received an order from Red Coral Aquarium in Calgary.
If it wasn't for all the westerners I wouldn't have found what I ordered or the level of service I received from RCA.

I think you will find canreef members provide good quality advice in timely manner - lots of experienced members here that participate rather than just review the threads.

Remember to refer a Ontario reefer to canreef next time you are at the LFS.

Mississauga here. The only advantage I see to "the other board" is the large number of classifieds from my area. I am glad to see that there is another board that is thriving and hope to see more from the GTA in the future. Also, if anyone in the GTA needs some acrylic work done, don't hesitate to give me a shout.

I was a member here many years back but either my account was closed or I can't remember what it was (which is more likely).
I wish there were more Ontario people here. The advice might be the same whether it's from the east side or the west, but when someone recommends a local place to shop, it's nice to have it local to me rather than Calgary :D

The "other place" is good for local sponsor ads, though.

That could be solved by getting more local people from your area to join and participate here.
With the lack of traffic now at the other site compared to what it used to have, there must be a lot of people out there that could be posting here.

lol AJ is a classic no names but I heard stories even from the moderators on how this guy is a crook, anyone need to know a few stories about this guy send me a pm, he is just far up his --- since suposibly his father was a marine biologist. he also thinks his opinions are best and what you should and shouldn't keep in your tank, I challenged openly on a thread and he banned me because he couldn't keep up with his stupidity or the questions I thew at him, guess he realized I know a little bit more about him than he thinks!!

Hope you like it.

I imported some great fish a year or two back (exotic/expensive ones), but realistically most people can find the fish they require at the LFS. Did not make sense for me, I shipped about 10 fish throughout Canada...

I would like to see more Ontario folks stay on the site and participate, rather than just pop in from time to time...

hullooo easterners! I just read through this thread and am now intrigued about this mysterious "other board" that you speak of  I love a good drama!

Canreef has been up since, what, 2001? I've been into saltwater since 2004 and only just joined canreef last April (2009) There are lots of people out there who still do not know about Canreef, even out west! I was at a LFS chatting it up with someone about reefs totally expecting that they were a canreefer that I had not met yet, and when I finally got around to asking what their handle was they just gave me a funny look

Anyway, happy reefing!

ps. I used to live in Mississauga (Meadowvale), does that count? :-D

It would definately be nice to see more Ontario members being active on Canreef. We are slowly getting more I see and that is awsome.

A definate benefit would be having an exclusive buy/sell section for hardware or livestock in Ontario, because it is sooo disappointing looking at some of the stuff other western members are offering, especially with livestock, and not being able to partake.
But I must say I have had great success with buying equiptment and having it shipped. Got my lights that way :)

As for getting more action on frag swaps, I think perhaps getting some of the sponsors involved would do wonders. They receive shipments all the time right? So, they would know how to ship it with good chances of survival.

If it is shipped from a sponsor, people are going to the sponsors shop. If a sponsor receives it, then people are going to the sponsor! Small fee for handling, and packaging, and done!

I have done consulting for public aquariums and zoos in the states and have also bred saltwater stingrays and Australian sharks. I tend to be a conservationist at heart and dont believe in feeding fish to other fish as I have never met a fish that cant be switched to frozen foods eventually. Ok maybe 1 or 2 fish:) I enjoy sharing my knowledge with others that may have troubles with keeping specimens as I believe the more you know the better your fish will be. Education is the key. I am excited to see others join in on this forum for Ontario!

Ridgeway is in the Niagara area right (my wife is from Wainfleet)

Not much point in coming the London way, 3 stores here, a Big Als with no stock, an "Incredibly" overpriced store, and a nice little store, but not a tonne of anything.

Best bet is to make your way along the 403. Stop at Oakville Reef Gallery (and the Oakville BA's across the street, then continue to Mississauge (Reefraft, Aquatic Kingdom, and the Chinese store all within a small area close to the BA's Mississauga.

Next would be NAFB, but that is over closer to the Toronto Zoo, so a little drive, and Sea U Marine in Newmarket.

There are a couple stores in Cambridge area too.

London, ON. No tank setup yet but I have 95% of the equipment I need. Light is on order from ReefGeek and waiting for a rock/sand shipment from eco-reefer at the end of the month.

I ordered most of my stuff from JL Aquatics which had good prices on everything but Lights. I have my US stuff shipped to the boarder than just go and pick it up (make a day trip out of it with the family). Its about a 45 minute drive to the boarder from my driveway.

I've been recommended to Fadelle Marine in St. Mary's for coral and livestock but i havent had a chance to go for everything is still in their original boxes

Welcom phi delt reefer. I used to live in London but now Im in Woodstock. I know what you mean about the stores in London. For livestock you will probably be best to make trips to the stores in east gta area. What you will save in $ and get in quality is far better. Stores like Oakville Reef Gallery, Aquatic Kingdom, Reef Raft. Also a little further are North American Fish Breeders and Sea U Marine. Oh and the oakville and mississuaga big als are pretty good for fish.

I'm in London too (sort of north-west end) and wouldn't mind some new LFSs too. Oakville Reef Gallery is the only one I've been to in the GTA since I don't have a car (it's a 10 minute walk from the VIA station :P) but it was full of gorgeous corals and they're quite friendly.

I had no idea there was a LFS in St Mary's.

Hey MrGoodbytes! - I am in the North East End (by Sherwood forest mall). My parents live in Oakville as do my kids' godparents so we make the drive every few months. I got some fraternity brothers in Kitchener which have an solid Big Als location though equipment selection is limited.

I placed an order for some lighting equipment with Reefgeek that i will be paying for/having shipped next week. If you need some bulbs (saw you tank thread) place an order with them and have them shipped to the border (look up US Shipping port Huron). I am going across to port huron in a few weeks to pick it up, you can tag along and grab your order if you want as well. THere is a BRS group buy somewhere on this forum as well - you can do the same with them, i have stuff at hte shipping place already waiting from BRS as well :)

cheer:)

Hey phi delt,

I may get in on the group buy if there's time but I have to make sure it's in the budget :P. I do need new lamps though...

Thanks for the offer on the border trip too. Unfortunately, I don't have a passport right now so I don't think I could tag along. Which place do you ship it to in Port Huron? Doesn't BRS already cover brokerage trans-border shipping? Sorry, bit of a n00b when it comes to ordering from the States.

BRS charges 15% which is the taxes plus some of the brokerage cost (they absorb the rest) - the shipping fees are usually around 20+ dollars on top of that. Shipping to the border is only like 5-10 bucks (slow ground but usually only takes a few days). I just drive over and grab it then bring it back. I did it with a set of $2000 rims for my car. Saved 600 bucks :)

Don't forget the best online retailer Fragd.it (http://www.fragd.it) ;) If you can't find anything good at those locations in the GTA, or just want frags to start your tank out, we are the best place to start.

Absolutely. We are working on designing a few for you all. They will be, for example "Softie #1 with 5-10 frags picked by us", or "SPS #1 with 2 rare, 4 intermediate, and 4 easy corals".

Things like that.

Ontario as well. Milton to be exact.

I've never used them but found this site www.incredibleaquarium.com (http://www.incredibleaquarium.com)
They are located in London. Prices seem good on tanks. Big Al's wants $749 (crazy I know) for Biocube 29HQI, they list them on their site for $499 cdn. But Big Al's does do price match I believe, so if you are closer to Big Al's you could always try and get them to match or beat the price.

Hey everyone. Brantford ON here, but I work in Burlington and head to the GTA every once in a while.

Reading through this thread, there have been a lot of good suggestions for LFS stores to check out. I always worry about the smaller stores and tend to stick to the Big Al's, but it sounds like I should be doing the opposite.

I'm setting up a Caribbean reef, and I was hoping to get some yellow-headed jawfish and eventually a cherub angel, and I was a little worried about ordering online and having livestock shipped to Ontario from who knows where.

Hey SirJ I wouldnt suggest ordering livestock online. Drive to Toronto with a cooler of newspaper and a couple crack heat packs. As for ordering equipment, thats usually the most affordable option. I order all of my equipment, and I am always satisfied with the products. If you need some suggestions, PM me with a list of stuff and I'll recommend a site that would work

I wouldn't want to be accused of speaking ill of the big box stores .... however, I've never seen livestock as healthy at them as at almost any of the smaller LFS.

In fact, the healthiest fish have been at the "smaller than the corner store", mom & pop LFS - without exception.

The trick is, it takes a bit of work on your part, you have to ask around & look around to find out who's good & who's not so good - then stick to them like glue! :)

Oh yeah, ordering (livestock) online - I've ordered hardware, inverts & coral & not had any problems. I haven't ordered fish. The thing is you have no idea of their condition & the freight is usually brutal unless you order a lot!
Even when I lived 3hrs from Calgary, I still found it worth it to take a Saturday to go there, do my general shopping, do my fish shopping & maybe visit some friends & come back that night. I could usually do that & spread the gas cost across all the shopping and come out ahead of ordering livestock online + I got to visit the fish stores, ask questions & chose the stock I wanted!

phi delt reefer
04-06-2011, 08:57 PM
you have access to Oakville Reef Gallery in Oakville and Advanced Aquatics in Milton. Both have healthy setups. ORG specializes in corals but can bring in whatever fishes you need. I assume AA can do the same for you

cheers

Ignore the name brand stores. They all have students and people aren't experienced. LFS is "Local Fish Store" so go local

My project is to build up a small online retail biz that supplies salt loving aquarists with high quality reef lights at great prices with cutomer service everyone deserves. In due time I would like to become a valued member and sponser here with Canreef and help as many people with questions about their reefs as possable. It is so nice to see a Canadian reef site.

I will let my friend know that there is a Canadian Forum site.

I have attached a couple of photos of my tank. I am new so don’t be too hard on me.
