I have finally decided to document the rebuild of my 72 gallon display.
First a little back tracking.
About a year ago things where going great, tank looked good, fish and corals happy and healthy.
http://i280.photobucket.com/albums/kk180/Canuckgod420/Main%20display/DSC_4151.jpg
I was using Zeo, and things rolled right along. Then I got sick, really sick. 2 weeks of no dosing of any kind. Then it all went downhill from there. Colours started to change from bright to brown. For the life of me I couldnt get things to turn around. Then it really started to fall apart, tissue loss on some corals, complete colonies dead over night, I just didnt know what to do.

I was on the verge of a complete teardown and wanted to give the entire hobby up, but my good buddy milliporamaniac talked me out of it.....thanks buddy:lol:

So a rebuild was in order.
I wanted to try something different this time, so I got rid of my MH setup and went with T5's, I got rid of the sand in the tank, and reduced my live rock by approx. 80lbs. I felt that there just wasnt enough room for the fish to swim around with all the large colonies and large rock pile.

So in june it all came down, and the rebuild was on. I really wanted to do something unique with the rockwork, leaving room for corals and swimming room for the fish. I also wanted to go bare bottom. This was my lighting line up to start with

Current 10k
Current 10k
Giesemann Actinic+
Giesemann Aquablue+
Giesemann Actinic+

This is what I came up with
July 09

Then September 09

So as of today I would have to say that I am VERY satisfied with my T5 lighting, growth is incredible and the colours are really starting to pop.
I removed 1 of the current 10k's and added another actinic+, I also removed the aquablue+ and replaced it with a KZ fiji purple.
Here are some top down shots from sept 25(first bulb configuration), and top downs from oct28(new configuration). The growth is insane for just 1 month( I think...LOL)

Nice rebuild... prefer the look of the tank in July compared to Sept tho, I find the coralline really overpowers the aesthetics of the tank, and makes it difficult to see the coral properly. I think it would make your corals "pop" better if it was scraped.

All in all though it looks good, I like the tower aquascaping.

Canuckgod420
11-01-2009, 08:53 PM
Thanks

I agree with the no coraline view, thats why I built the rock towers rather than the rock face. Problem is...I cant get my scraper in there without smacking corals.
The backing is also removable( held on with velcro), I made it like this so I could get the mag float in there, but my arm doesnt reach far enough around the back to get the entire area. So if anyone has any ideas, I would love to hear them. Also, what can I do about the coraline on the overflow, its even tougher to scrape than the glass.

I liked the second picture better myself, the first looks to sterile. The Fiji Purple really makes the colors pop I'm going to have to buy one or two of those! The SPS are really doing great! I see you went bare bottom this time, are you going to keep it like this and how do you like it?

Canuckgod420
11-02-2009, 10:50 PM
Yeah I really like the fiji purple as well, its so bright:idea:

I went bare bottom this time and really dig it...all the detritus collects under the wavebox and once a week I syphon it out.
I do have a deep sandbed in my refugium.

WOW!!
What are you dosing?

Canuckgod420
03-04-2010, 11:14 PM
Thanks guys!!!

I'm not really dosing anything special, I run a zeo reactor with the zeo rocks, a phosban reactor with carbon, and my calcium is dosed via the home made 2 part system.
I also have a 5G pail setup with my RO top up water on a float valve(this needs refilling every 3 days) and what I find seems to be working for me right now is 1 fill is clean RO water, next fill will be a kalk/vinegar mixture(helps maintain calcium levels), and the next fill is 2 cups magnesium mixed with RO. Then the entire cycle starts again. I have been doing this for about 8 months now, and all I can say is WOW.

Anyhow......heres a couple more pics.

Is this M. Confusa? Some of the polyps look green...looks really sweet!

The majority of corals are in the same spot....just lots of growth, and of course several have been added as well.

that is either a confusa or horrida? Its 1 of my favorites. I'm gonna take some top down shots of the tank, that coral has grown to about 7 inches across.
Its all coming down in the next couple of weeks anyways so I guess I'll enjoy it while I can.

Frags anyone?

there is just something about the 72 gallon bowfront that makes a really nice reef.
How your first one was never TOTM is beyond me.

A little harder to scape with only 16" at the sides but you really did a great job on the new new.

Looking awesome.

Just curious though, why did you axe the sand on round 2?

I just had a bit of a crash and am considering what changes to make.

Canuckgod420
07-16-2010, 10:41 PM
I got rid of the sand because I was tired of not being able to clean the glass all the way down to the bottom. Also I wanted more flow and I didnt like the way the sand kept getting blown around, and now the detritus is so easy to remove.

The 72 bow only has 11 inches on the sides, 18 inches in the middle, making it a little tough to aquascape.

Doesnt matter though, its all coming down in the next few weeks anyways.

There really isnt much to my sump, skimmer, zeo reactor, carbon chamber, and 2 return pumps. Quiet One 4000 (return to display) Mag 9 (return to fuge and frag tank, and also branches off to chiller). No baffles at all and I still dont get any micro bubbles.

I'm interested in purchasing one of the Sun Blaze 48 fixtures for use over a 75 gallon SPS reef I'm building and am wondering, from your experience, what the pros and cons are to using this system on a reef. Appreciate your input very much as there doesn't seem to be a whole lot of folks who use this light setup. Thanks!

Pros:
Very bright with individual reflectors
very little heat transfered to tank
lots of bulb combinations

Cons:
no built in fans
no place to put a splash guard
and for some reason they built this light with the 2 switches so you can run it in 2 - 4 bulb combos, problem is, there is only 1 power cord, so all the bulbs have to run off one timer.

Sweet! Thanks very much. From looking at it, I get the impression that, while there are better fixtures more suited to reefs, for what this one does have it's more than worth the cost. Your tank in this thread looks phenomenal and if that is any indication, I'm very excited about this fixture. Weird that they'd do two switches but one cord. Oh well, I guess it's still cool that you can shut off one half if you like. Could come in handy. Thanks for the info.

Everything faded a little after the transfer from the 72, but things are really starting to look good.

My new atlantic blue tang has made himself right at home. Sure has a big appetite too!

Hi,
Beautiful tank and colours. A while back you posted about dosing via ato. Are you still doing this? One bucket of RO, followed by one of a vinegar/kalk mix, then 2 cups mag, and repeat. Would you give the recipe for the middle bucket and whether you ramped up the dose or kept the same.
What do you use for mag and where do you get it.
Thanks for the help.

Thanks for the nice comments.
Right now I am not doing the kalk dosing because I changed up my top up system. I now run a 30' line from my RO reservoir in my laundry room under the house into the sump ( float valve), when I had the 72 gallon a 5 gallon bucket would last 3 days, once I upgraded I was going through that in a day. Now i'm tied into my 20 gallon reservoir.

Heres a little update.

A few months back we purchased 5 Lyretail Anthias to join the 1 we already had, they where all females but we knew that 1 would dominate and change to a male.
This is what they all looked like 3 days ago.

Now the original one has started the change and WOW what a huge difference 3 days makes.

I am very happy with it for sure. I am however going to upgrade to a 5 foot fixture ASAP.

Did you qt your anthias? ..... Too little to late but anthias are known for being prone to internal parasites..... Did you notice if the two that died had white stringy poop prior to them passing?

Canuckgod420
07-08-2011, 04:20 PM
I actually did not Qt the Anthias first....probably should have. The thing is, I bought the first Anthias at JL aquatics from a tank of about a 100 Anthias, then 2 months later there where only 5 left so the wife wanted to get the rest of them. They all looked pale in colour but in about a week of feeding my homemade mix they where the brightest fish in the tank.
Then like I stated in an earlier post, the first Anthias we had began to transform. Then 2 or 3 weeks later he started acting bizarre, stopped eating, then died. Then all the rest started dissapearing, now we are down to 1.

Great shots. Wanna come to my house and take some for me?? :)

Sure, I would love to.
These shots are all right I just wish I could get them a little less blue in colour. I adjusted the white balance and I still cant seem to get it just right. Ive even gone as far as turning off all the blue T5's and they still come out to blue....I dont get it.
However, if you look at Millipora Maniacs pics (which I also took) everything is exactly the right colour (he runs metal halide not T5's)

Thanks for the compliments, I was using a nikon d40 but the damn thing crapped out on me recently so now i have nothing to shoot with. I was using the standard lens on the camera, and I made an acrylic tube to put over the lense so i would get good shots from above.
