I just discovered while I was out that my 60lb dog ate approximately 15-20 30mg prevacid pills(lansoprazole) does anyone happen to know how worried I should be? It's probably been a few hours since it happened but he seems fine. I called my vet but they weren't much help other than giving me the animal poison control # which charges $ just to give me an answer:neutral:.

Maybe make the dog puke?

It acts similarly to omeprazole so I don't expect there will be any issue.

Could try calling regular poison control for humans and base the weight and dose for overdose? They should help! Also calling animal emergency clinic would likely be more helpful than regular vet clinic. Hope all will be okay!

It's been too long to force him to vomit. Vet said the same thing.

That's what I'm hoping.

from what I can tell, he'll just have a lack of stomach acid for awhile. so he won't be able to digest stuff.

at this point I don't think you can do much if he can't puke it up. you'll just have to wait it out.

Yeah, I'm watching him carefully and my vet didn't seem too concerned since it's been over an hour and he's acting normally. Maybe I shouldn't worry so much I suppose. If it was really serious I guess I would have been told to bring him in.

Side effects for people are nausea, diarrhea, abdominal pain and headaches. So the dog will probably be fine but you might want to keep it off the good carpet.

One more thing, this drug reduces the PH of the stomach so you might want to put the dog and a rice and ground beef diet for a few days to help prevent vomitting.

Sounds like a good idea, thanks.
