HI!
I'm new here...

We have salt water aquarium for 5 years now. Started with a 90g... went after on a upgrade to a 265g... and now we donwsized to a 140g.. ;)

Here's what the 265g look like at his best:
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b221/josee1013/all-1.jpg

we closed it a few months ago... too much work, too expensive....

So now we have a 140g tank, SPS dominated.
Here's some pics...

Hi Josie, welcome to Canreef! I think both tanks look great, however, I would give the edge to the 140 (really like the rimless, the light fixture and the aquascaping)

Thanks for the welcome :)

New skimmer installed today... not a new technology but we hope it will do the work.
We bought a used Octopus Downdraft... anyone have experience with this one or other downdraft skimmers?

Hi Josie, I'm a big fan of downdraft skimmers, had them for many years, currently I have a ETSS 1400 dual downdraft skimmer powered by a Iwaki MD70 RLT 1750 gph on my 500 gallon reef since 2000, I have no intentions in upgrading at all despite the newer skimmer that have come on the market. They need a pump to be sized properly in order to run efficiently, a lot of hobbyist donot size the pump correctly to run the skimmer properly, I know a lot of hobbyist back then that was ready to throw out the downdraft because it was not working efficiently, today many of them are still running the downdraft, some switched over to in sump needlewheel due to money burning in their pockets and newer technology. Downdrafts are noisy and they take up a lot of space, mine is hooked up externally to the sump. In my fishroom, noise is not a concern, considering all the other tanks running. I never took my skimmer apart for cleaning or replacing the bioballs, all I did was clean out the collection cup, the adjustment was set 9 years ago and never touched since. I don't know too much about the downdraft you have, but depending on space and where you have the aquarium, a downdraft skimmer may not be for everyone, downdraft are not as popular today as back then because again a lot of exciting good skimmers are coming to the market... hmmmm a vertex alpha cone again love the 140 gal, now happy aquarium and back to mine regards Ken

Ken: Thanks for you post. The skimmer seems to work well... we put a Mag 9.5 on it...we installed it in-sump... it's 10"x6"x23" We dont have a fish room per say but more a fish-closet... I'll post pics of the installation soon!

Argan: Thanks. We are doing our best to keep everything in order so the corals are happy and growing... Most of the SPS in the tanks we bought from a friend who closed is tank... for now everyone is doing ok since the move...

Sorry guys I did not post anything since september!! many things happend...

but this is one of the most stressfull situation I personnally had to date:

let me tell you about our near aquarium catastrophe...

december 23th 2009, 7pm... we are cleaning the house for out xmas eve party with 12 guests... dear husband is cleaning the front pannel of the tank with the magnetic brush... and ears a "crac"... to our horror a 1 inch crac appears in the inside glass, without pearcing trough...
PANIC IN THE HOUSE
we decided to get to our FS and get a new tank before it break...
10pm we arrive with the new tank, a 150g (60x24x27) we had to call the brother in law to get is mini-van to bring the tank back...
we get more then 20 plastic rubermaid containers on the floors and start to transfert water,LR, fish, corals....
midnight we move the old tank, put the new one in place... get started on plumbing (the new tank has overflows)...
2am we start transfering the sand in the the new tank, adding 70g of new watrer
3am start putting water, LR, corals and fish back in the aquarium...
we found our female swallowtail angelfish on the side on the bottom of a container.. not breathing too much... I decided to do like fisherman who release their pray: I move her under water to revive her... and it works!!!
4:30am we finally get to bed.. but I have to say that I did not sleep much ;)

So here's the 150g tank... we replace the corals and sold the huge LTA...
everything is doing good.

thanks!
yes the aqua-scaping in the previous 265g was a big "mistake"... having a big wall of LR was not good.. too much "dead spots"... we learn a lot form that tank ;)

tail spots are so cute together! they have their little places to hide and they sometime "dance" together... always amazing to watch ;)

and I did not saw verticle lines, I think it's a female... the males is the one that has lines... I had one in the previous 265g tank but he comit suicide... a few days after introducing him in the tank it was so scare that it swim in a hole too fast and a LR feld on him... poor fishy

Yes, yours is a female. Mine looks like yours but it might be changing into a male (?possible?) because I can see shadows of vertical lines. Then again it might be stress/adjustment related because it is a new aquisition - yesterday!

we are thinking of changing the skimmer ...
the bioload is quite large and Lieutenant tang eats like a pig lol
currently we have an octopus downdraft (we add a becket injector) but it's not strong enough ...
The orp was 330-350 and now it's more 300-310 since the new tang is in...

Just keep in mind that we want to pay more than 400$ ... therefore no bubbleking or 1000$ skimmers are out...
ratings should be 300/350g (the set up is 200g heavy load)
preferably in sump ...
the foot print maximum is 7.1"x10"

you have any sugestions?

Lance
05-13-2010, 11:31 PM
Look into the Bubble Magus line of skimmers. Reasonably priced and perform well. The cone skimmers have a small footprint as well.

josie
05-18-2010, 10:05 PM
So we bought a used ETSS600 skimmer for 250$ :)
if it's not strong enought we wil get the extension to make it a ETSS 900...

A litlle addition to the tank today, a pistol tiger shrimp:

some updates

we observe that the sps were not extending their polyps that much last week... water tests were all good... so we decided to do a big water change (30%) and everything is doing better now... ORP got from 315/320 to 400...
maybe some colonies got some chemical out that affected others..
the mysteries of reef keeping!

after reading many positive things about biopellets we decided to install a reactor to try it out... we bought biobeads (less costly then the biopellets) that arrived today and we will install everything this week-end :)
I'll keep you posted about this

Fantastic tank, looks really good!!!

I am curious to know what you think of the new skimmer and what pump you are using on it. I have a 900 and have mixed feelings although i suspect part of my problem has been the pump.

I would welcome your thoughts.

Thanks

Looking good Josie! Do you ever have any problems lowering your water level like that for water changes? The last time I did a water change like that all of the coraline algae out of the water bleached on me and I lost a stupid amount of color from a few acros.

josie

yes coraline that was out water died but it come back after.
No sps colours changes after big wc... the sps that have lost colours in you tank after big wc they were out of water for how long?

I had the impeller on my return pump break at that exact time so they were sitting out for about an hour and a half. Everyone is regaining color now but I'm afraid to do my water changes like that.

an hour and a half is long, could explain the colour loss, too much stress. glad it came back.

We have a clonwfish couple in our reef tank and we knew they were reproductive pair because the previous owner had seen eggs several time. It's the first time they reproduce in our tank (we have them for almost a year now). :)

I dont really dose anything!
I do 30% water change every 3 months and 10% WC each 1-2 weeks...
I use instand ocean salt.
For the past month I just started a biopellets reactor... because it's supose to controle cyano outbrakes.. for now the cyano seems to have slowly disappeared...

the small cardinal are glass cardinals (Apogon leptacanthus)
it's one the few reef fish that leaves in shoal, so the more you have the more interresting they are!

This is slightly more but this is what I used to do my DIY rock on my thread to give you the idea of what it is.... the quality in real life is way better then online I just didn't want to upload that big of a file... also almost all of my pictures taken in the last 2 months are with this camcorder. (most pictures have been resized in "paint" so they are not the best quality... size was more important then quality)

Delphinus

Both have their strengths and drawbacks. There generally is only one species of seahare imported for the hobby. I forget the exact species offhand though. They don't live a long time but they are so ugly that they are beautiful. If they eat all the hair algae in your tank you have to feed them something like spirulina pellets, but only some will realize that it's food and adapt whereas others will starve. The longest I ever had one live was somewhere between 18 and 24 months.

it looks like this:

it magnifies 200x... but has just a 2megapixel, so it's not great resolution...
it's quite difficult to focus and when there's too much light it's a blur...

We notice that the colors of corals in the tank ... it's more "vibrant" ... more colorful ...
We changed nothing ... we do not add anything (no zeo, no iodine, no trace elements) ... We use instant ocean salt .... we have a calcium reactor (knop KORALlith), we stopped the kalkawaser reactor for the past few weeks (PH and KH remains good) ... we use e-bay MH...

Is this because the bio-pellets reactor? maybe .. maybe not ...

an example of more detail and vibrant color ... the brain:

WOW Josie...nice job all the way, great updates and with all the equipment specs too! That is very helpful for others to see. Love your devotion to keepin up the posts with ample pictures. That brain is soooo GEORGEOUS! The bio pellets probably help alot, reducing nitrates-which make colors drab and reducing phosphate-which inhibits calcification, you will probably notice a surge of SPS growth too. Great job, keep up the fantastic work. Love to hear reefers out there that are totally comitted to their tanks like you are. Looking forward to the next round of updates. Very inspiring!!!

2 months since the skimmer is in action!

We really think it's working great! I think this old technology is quit "soft" on the water... compare to using a needle wheel or other pomp that are hard on water...

our hait algae problems seems to end, the algae is dying and disolving!

The polyps extension is amazing!

I saw my crocea clam spawning last night! (sorry no video)

How common is that in a home reef aquarium?

BlueTang<3
11-23-2010, 01:06 PM
I was excited when my clam spawned also but it is actually extremely bad. Did it white out the entire tank? Tony (Delphineious) lost a large chunk of his live stock following a clam spawn.

josie
11-23-2010, 01:17 PM
no it was not that much.. the clam is about 4"... so it's not a big clam...

Delphinus
11-23-2010, 03:35 PM
I'm not sure how rare it is, I think it's reasonably uncommon for the most part but having said that I seem to get about at least once a year. My clams are older and larger than average though, so it could have something to do with size and age.

Most of the times the event seems small enough but I did have a massive clam spawn about a year ago that spiked my system hard enough that I did lose fish, I think it was due to O2 depletion, the fish that died were all breathing/pumping very hard and heavy in their final moments. Not much you can do to prevent it, if it happens it happens, just be sure to keep your carbon clean, skimmer clean and be ready to do a waterchange if need be afterwards.

josie
11-23-2010, 04:04 PM
Delphinus: what was the size of the clam and your tank size?

Delphinus
11-23-2010, 05:26 PM
Tank is a 115g cube (30"x30"x30"). I never did find out for sure which clam(s) it was that time but it may have been my 12" squamosa. Had another spawn about a month ago and it was my 8" maxima that time (thankfully nobody died that time but it still made a huge mess of the tank).

Rbacchiega

Brett???? Muck??? Anybody??? Ha ha I'm just kidding Tony, and I'm not trying to joke about the crappy experience...but yeah.

a little sad moment this week.. one of the LR started falling and it the capricornis.. it broke appart :(
we have to do aqua-scaping this week-end...

dont know if it was because of the pistol shrimp digging tunnels under the LR or because the corals colonies are getting bigger...

well maybe it's a sign...
2011 will be a changing year.. selling some colonies and getting new ones!

when is -25 C (-13F) outside what better way to pass a Sunday afternoon doing aqua-scaping!

we attempt to repair the damage of the LR slides of this week ... the rock with capricornis and seriatopora is arranged, hoping it picks up, and that it will be as beautiful like before because for the moment is not great...

the undata had a trim... it interferes less with the flow now!

small water change and the afternoon passed quickly

Looks like the bulb is around 14K. Maybe consider a 10K for qt. It might make it easier to spot something and it will encourage growth - albeit at the possible cost of colouration.

Finally we decide to stop the bio-pellet reactor after 8 months of use.
Reason : start STN spots in some corals ... and the readings of several posts on on forums describing problems after 6 months of bio-pellets ...
Our hair Algea problem is nearly eliminated we decided to stop the pellets ...
So we reinstalled Matrix in the mediar eactor (nextreef)...

Last night: large water change of 30% and cleaning of the sump (Berlin)...

6 new SPS in the quarantine tank!
which will be place in the main tank in the coming weeks, if everything is ok.

josie

Sorry to not having giving news sonner.. many things happened... not many good things...

the last 2 weeks have been long and sad ... On april 3rd we had to euthanize our beloved greyhound, Tuffy... :(
the void left by his departure is huge...
We remember all the good times we had with him during the 6 years we got him.
We miss our big dogy a lot...
:laluot_10:

The tank has it's up and downs...

We had to frag down the blue and green staghorn because of algae got stuck in the midle of the colony and started bleaching...

We discovered montipora eating nudi this week ... cursed bugs... we sucked out all the eggs visible and cut quite a bug section of different montis (among other the big undata :( ) .. We entered a six-line wrasse that looks busy swimming around corals for critters...
for the moment everything is under control, no new spot nibbled and no new pile of eggs ...
If we see new ones we will get dipping products ... coral RX probably ...

One of the overflow has also decide to block ... we play the plumber ... and in the bottom of the overflow I rescued a fish ... our 2nd blue-spotted watchman! it must be 6 months that we did not seen it! it was doing good in the overflow .. eat all the flakes and another food that flows down there lol

The new frag tank will be placed under the aqua in the cabinet ... We will remove aquas in the work-shop..less problems with noxious fumes of Marc hobbies (restauration of old cars) ...

We found the pistol shrimp in the sump... little naughty critter have fun in going down the durso pipe ... we put it back in the main tank .. the goby was happy to see it's friend back! lol

so that's the news here...

Life is full of cycles.

The passions are born, grow, decline, rebirth and sometimes die.
Our interest in the salt water he soon began more then 10 years ... a 90g freshwater turned into saltwater.
Then came big leagues with the 250g and then the 140g (this tread).
The years have bring discoveries, mistakes, happiness and sorrows.
The adventure was rewarding although sometimes frustrating.
It allowed us to meet a bunch of folks and even created some great friendships.

But now our cycle ends.

We closed our 140g yesterday.

Thank you for all your comments!!
For now we are converting to planted freshwater.. the beggining of a new adventure...

Life is full of cycles.. maybe someday we will return to saltwater...
