Just got back my old 55 gallon from sister in law, glass is in good shape, but the plastic bracing that goes around the bottom,is cracked in 2 places, should I get a new 55 or take the risk and glue the brace.

I have always thought that the plastic was just there because they do not round the edges of the glass, ie it is sharp. If you take the plastic off, there isn't any structural strength in it at all, It bends easily. Very flimsy plastic indeed!
I would just glue it, place it on some foam outside and fill it with water, see what happens.

the plastic is usually just cosmetic and protection form sharp edges as stated

I took the plastic bottom off my 25 gal tank and it is fine.

I have taken the trim off of tanks before and never had a problem. Keep in mind if you take it off you need to put some styrofoam under it.

Some bottom plastic trim incorporates a center brace which also supports the bottom glass, both horizontally as well as under the glass to prevent deflection. Not sure if yours would have this, but even with minor cracks on the trim, it's probably worthwhile to keep the trim on there.

If it's an old tank in general and showing signs of wear and tear and a new tank is available in your budget I would buy a new one. 55 gallons is more than enough to make a huge mess of your place.
