Started using this pump on a 90g with 33g sump. Are there any other owners out there who can advise as to dampening the overwhelming sound of this unit? It sounds like I'm having my furnace cleaned.

I tried throttling back the flow with ball valves on the returns, but it was worse. It likes to run free.

With my ear to the glass, I can't imagine any creature wanting to live with the vibration and noise.

Suggestions? Other than the "Buy/Sell" forum?

You could biuld an enclosure around the pump with ventillation holes for cooling. Also try to place syrofoam or something else under the pump to prevent vibration. Also I don't think you are supposed to resrtict the outport of the pump.

It's sitting on 3 layers of 1" styrofoam, the softer variety. An enclosure may be the way to go.

Off to the DIY forum.

AJ, little giants are loud, there's no way around it. Even the little ones are loud. If you have room to put a box around it, as per Simon's suggestion, go for it.

All right, we'll try the enclosure. Thanks for the input.

In the meantime, what pumps are the favourites among our board members? I'm looking for around 1000 gph, and reasonably quiet.

Ampmaster? Iwaki? Mak?

Thanks.

I'm using a Mag 5 for my return, you can't hear it at all. You'll be looking for a Mag 9 or 12. Just my $.02.

I use a pump know as a "velocity pump" I get them direct from the manufacture before velocity puts their stamp on them. They are titanium shaft pumps that are so quiet that you have to put your hand on one to tell if its running or not. The 2 that I commonly use are about 900gph and 1200gph they are great pumps!!!!
No more boeing 747's in your living room!!!
