thinking of new camera, help decide

Well, I got some Air miles to use up here, and we need a new camera. Now, I would like a waterproof one, so I can take snowmobiling, and to the beach etc. BUT, I also love some of the sweet macro shots people are getting here.

I have this one Canon PowerShot S3IS and it is very good camera, good zoom(x12 optical), optical image stabilizer and very good macro shots close ups.

I wasn't going to buy one, I was/am going to use Airmiles. So, it has to be one of the cameras Airmiles supplies. One of the 3 in the links.

Basically, I was really wondering if anyone has a Underwater camera, Like the Olympus, and how do they like it for overall use?

I'm a Canon fan so that would be a great choice. The Panasonic also has a high quality Leica lens but I don't know much about the electronics etc. Check out www.dpreview.com for reviews and user forums. There will be tons of info there.

You can get a Nikon D60 with 18-55mm lens for $550. For that price it really doesn't make much sense to buy a compact unless you're looking for something that will fit in your pocket. If you do buy a compact keep in mind that more zoom (like 12x optical) isn't really a good thing, with more zoom comes less sharpness, I would personally stick to a 3 or 4 times optical zoom. For compacts the Canon G range is nice, one of the few that allows you to take pictures in RAW and has aperture and shutter speed priority modes, however it's not the smallest compact but probably the best as far image quality and function.

I had a Canon G9 and it took amazing pictures and fit in the palm of your hand. I sold it and now have a Canon T1i DSLR and it takes a much superior picture. DSLR are not that convenient for carrying around during activities and on holidays. They are somewhat cumbersome and heavy.

Neither of these cameras are what I would call waterproof. I do not think I would take either of them near the water without a special waterproof box.

theres quite alot of good choiced out there, The canon G10 provides you with RAW capabilities in a compact P&S body, if you are looking into DSLR quality cameras but want it in a P&S size the G10 is probably the best bet for a P&S without lens changing.

If you want a compact P&S size DSLR look into the olympus E-P1, it is pretty much a E-620 DSLR in a compact body and uses a compact style mount. Look into that if you want something small and powerful.
