My red goniopora, which was a really deep red completely lost ALL of its colour when the temperature in the tank crashed last December. This thing was ghost white and I was sure it was toast. It also retracted ALL of its feeding arms/mouths and kinda looked like a favia/brain coral. Fortunately, this thing is NUKE PROOF. Slowly but surely, it started to get its colour back and slowly started to extend its arms/mouths. I got pink, then darker pink, then orangy-red-pink. It's still not quite the deep red that it once was but it's getting there.

Oh I can make a frag anytime! We can just schedule something :-) I can also frag a bunch of other stuff that I really should prune..
* Red monti cap (*yawn*)
* Green birdsnest (*yawn*)
* Pink birdsnest
* multi-colour birdsnest
* Green confusa
* neon red/orange monti
* Forrest fire monti (that lost its green last December but is slowly coming back)
* Red/Orange/pink Montipora cebuensis (Bloody Mary Monti ?)

You guys are making me nervous now that I have installed a controller…
My tank has been up for 7 years also. I still have some of the original corals I started out with, including a bit of pulsing xenia which has somehow survived a lot of changes including bio-pellets.

Don't panic! There is no need to worry.. unless/until your controller crashes. I've pretty much resigned myself to the fact that, if something can go wrong, it probably will, at some point. Just enjoy the ride until the wheels fall off. :lol:
Delphinus

I wouldn't say "ditch your controller" but ultimately it is a piece of equipment like any other that is prone to eventual failure of some kind. Make sure that there are mitigations in place for any one thing that can take out a tank. In my case I've added a Ranco to my heater: both controllers have to fail for the heater to get stuck powered on. (Frankly I need to go even one step further and buy a smaller wattage heater, shame on me for not having done that yet, I better get on with that.)
But yeah "eggs all in one basket" kinda thing. I do prefer the ability to control outlets via a single controller (and correspondingly using my laptop or phone to do programming adjustments), but that's really where the convenience ends for me.
Delphinus
03-29-2016, 09:14 PM
But yeah Kien is right. Eventually a wheel will fall off no matter what you do. Just enjoy the ride and hope for the best and deal with whatever comes your way as it plays out..

Sweet, also did you put anything under your stand to help level it out? Like 1/2" foam, or 3/4 plywood?

There's foam between the tank bottom and the counter top but nothing under the stand itself.

Okay okay fine.. here's an update!
Wow, I just realized that this tank is going on 8 years running this year. Time flies when you're having (and not having) fun! The tank is actually doing quite well, all things considering (ie, reduced maintenance time). I think the tank has kind of been on auto-pilot for the last couple of years. I haven't really done much to it other than the bare minimum which I would consider:
1. Cleaning algae off the glass.
2. refilling ATO container weekly.
3. Checking for any dead fish (my boxfish died last weekend and nearly nuked the whole tank.. oops!).
4. Empty skimmer cup every 1-2 weeks.
5. Clean out skimmer cup every 3-4 weeks or when my house starts to smell funny. Whichever comes first.
6. Refill autofeeder every 3-4 weeks.
7. Refill carbon and GFO bags (in the sump) every 1 to 6 months.
9. A water change every 1 to 2 months.
I have stopped dosing 2-part (calc/alk). Growth is slow but I'm OK with that for now.
I still quite enjoy having my tank and viewing it but I admit I don't fuss over it like I used. Mostly because I just don't have the time anymore :neutral:

See the thing is, the updated picture that I'm about to post probably looks EXACTLY like the last pic from maybe a year or two ago. The tank really hasn't changed much, if at all. I haven't added or removed any corals or fish (other than my boxfish last weekend) so the tank kinda looks the same.
Isnt it time to trim those coral or accidentally break some SPS branches? I'm looking to buy ;-)
Ya, my larger fish do a got job of fragging and I admit that my sandbed does tend to get littered with some corals, but mostly the vary hardy and easy to acquire pieces like digitata, birdnest, montipora, etc.
Just finished reading this entire tank journal...#Inspired. Tank looks awesome and I hope everything is still thriving :smile:

The maristar yes! You know I never got around to installing the reefbrights permanently. I kept meaning to rig up a housing to mount them beside my maristars but I never did! So they have been collecting dust :lol:
I have been thinking of switching over to LEDs this year though, if only just to reduce the cost of electricity a little bit. I wouldn't say my electricity bill is huge, but you know, environmental friendliness and all that.
That flowerpot is off the charts!!
Ya no kidding. That thing is a best and nuke proof! Levi gave that to me like 6 years ago.

Thanks. Everyone once in a while something interesting happens though. Like last weekend my boxfish kicked it and nearly nuked the tank. My yellow tang was on its side breathing heavily. I was certain he was done. A few other fish were lethargic and my protein skimmer was overflowing. I had to jump into action by dumping 4 bags of carbon into the sump to clean it up. By the next day everyone was back to normal phew!

Hey Kien, is your powder blue still an "ich magnet"? My powder brown appears to be developing ich and I'm a little concerned. I read through your build / tank journal and noticed that you had said your powder would show signs but manage through it. I'm hoping this is the case as I have had my powder brown for 3 months now and it seems he is starting to display ich spots.

Yes both my Powder Blue and Blue/Regal Tang still get ich from time to time. I haven't added anything new to my tank in a long time so it comes less frequent, but still happens. For example, when my box fish died a few weeks ago and the tank was polluting up, that stressed the fish and the tangs developed a little ich. As usual (for them), they weathered it and are ich-less again. It has always been my experience that if the fish is strong and healthy and there isn't any other underlying health issue(s), my fish have been able to kick the ich.
Often times if a fish gets ich it is because they are stressed but unfortunately that source of stress could easily be another ailment (virus, bacteria, infection, etc). That's when things get dicy.

GET rid of those red mushrooms before they take over and become plague unless you like them then keep them ( but personally kill them with fire ) such a pain basically had to do a tank restart when i moved houses due to them. I wanted to not have them and they were everywhere on every rock cranny so I said F it and went with new rock and a new scape. They started small and we went on a 1 month backpack trip and idk what happened ( still conivinced my brother house sitter put mushroom steroids in my tank) but after we can back they had a mind of there own lol
GET rid of those red mushrooms before they take over and become plague unless you like them then keep them
haha ya, I guess I've been lucky that they haven't proliferated to plague proportions. I've had them a long long time too. They just don't seem to multiply, I don't know why! Maybe it's the particular species. There are different "red mushrooms". In fact, these ones are definitely more on the orange side, rather than red. I've seen much more red ones in the stores. Maybe that's the difference. I do love them though, as do most of my guests. They are one of the highlights of my tank (both figuratively and literally).
BRING BACK THE STICKS!!!!
Hey y'all! I'm not sure if anyone remembers me, but back in the day I used to dabble a little in reef keeping. Anyway, figured I'd drop an update in case anyone cares.

Hey ya! To be honest, I'm kinda surprised that it is still running.
So ya, the Halide fixture is still the original Maristar Halide+T5 combo fixture from day one. It has served me well, but so old skool. Unfortunately, it is getting increasingly difficult and more expensive to replace the bulbs on it. As a result, I am in the process of formulating a plan to replace the fixture.
Yesterday I decided to clean out my overflow box. I don’t think I’ve touched it in over two years. That was a mistake. It was completely filled with tube worms. And not the soft skin feather dusters either. The ones that make the hard calcium tubes. Nasty.

Ya I was surprised it didn’t completely clog up. There are 3 overflow drains and one of them was practically clogged. The other two took over I guess. It’s very satisfying to see a clean overflow box again.

The long weekend coming up would be a good time. I thought cleaning out my overflow would be an hour chore. Ended up spending 3 hours on it. I kept clogging the pipes with that mess and had to pull out my auger to clear out the pipe. Also made a big mess outside the tank I had to clean up :facepalm: Maybe yours won't be as bad as mine. Aren't most tanks against a wall? :lol: But ya, I hear ya. It was really awkward to get back there since the overflow is literally inches from the wall. I tried so hard not to make a huge mess but ended up with one anyway. What I ended up doing was taping up a huge sheet of painters poly wrap plastic on the wall and under the overflow around the tank. That helped a lot. Getting up there was awkward too. I'm not a tall person so balancing on a combination of step stools and barstools was interesting. Hopefully I'm good for another 5-10 years :lol:

That's my flame angel. He's definitely sketchy.
BRING BACK THE STICKS!!!!
Ok fine. After a bit of an hiatus from collecting I thought I’d take up your suggestion to do the sticks again. Wish me luck! I feel like I’m new to this :lol:

Oops!
After 13 years of running Halide+T5 combos on this tank, I have finally entered the 21st century. Sorry Ken.

I seriously need to learn how to take pictures of LED lit tanks.
Thanks dave@concepts for hooking me up with these bad boys.
Definitely looking good, loved the Radions, glad to hear you are back at it, but I still think you won the lottery LOL regards Ken

Thanks! Have only had them a day and I'm already loving them. Don't get me wrong, the halides were nice and got the job done, but the amount of flexibility in LED lights is astounding. I've been missing out! I love that I can dial in the exact colour rendition that I want. As it is, I tweaked the AB+ template to give me a more appealing (to me) colour cast. I also love that my temp doesn't swing anymore. The halides raised my tank temp a few degrees a day. It is never a problem in the fall/winter/spring months, but in the middle of summer it can be a huge issue. It HAS been a huge issue. Especially the last few years where we have had much warmer summers.

Welcome to the future.
Welcome to the future.
The future is so bright, I gotta wear shades. Seriously, I need to find those yellow/orange shades that I've seen people wearing to view their LED tanks. Also, I can't believe it took me this long to go LED. Now I kinda want to get a set of vortechs.
Couple of new additions.
Octospawn. Love the subtle movement in this guy.
