I was at Marine Aquaria the other day and they had a blue ribbon eel in their space tank. I thought he was cool so I thought I'd share some pic.'s

Not me I think he's so cool, I'd probably hand feed him.
If I had a closed escape proof big enough tank to put him in (or the extra money to set one up) I would've bought him in a heart beat. Too bad he'd escape from my open top side overflow 230g tank. Most likely he'd go for many rides into the overflow and into the sump, and eventually leave the refugium area he'd fist get dumped into and have a bad run in with a pump  Not worth the risk since I know eels love to escape down overflows and jump out of tanks *sigh* it's too bad they don't stay put.

unless it's just the pic he looks like he has some lesions on his body.

It's probably just the pic. I suck at taking pic.'s. If you're referring to the back marks, they are just patches of colour not lesions.

it's a lot more likely that it will die before this happens. these eels suck in captivity.

I was reading about that. I guess about 95% will never eat in captivity so they slowly starve to death. However this one is eating, not a lot but it is eating a little bit.

These should not be kept in captivity, but we as the "master race" do as we see fit now don't we:p

FYI it's not mine, I saw it at the store and thought it was cool so I took pic.'s of it. I know their next to impossible to keep alive in captivity.

Thankfully our LFS will no longer order these in because they've never had any success with them. I'm not sure how many they killed until they realized that they were losing money every time. Its too bad as those are really amazing looking eels.

I'm not sure they meant to, might of been a surprise switch of orders. I've never seen one before in person, and I have to agree with whatcaneyedo as they really are amazing looking eels.

I do agree it is unfortunate these continue to come in. Some stores do not order them in anymore, they just "show up" in livestock orders. Many still do though. And then for those eels "smart" enough to start eating prepared foods they will most likely find a way out of the aquarium eventually. It is sad, and it is this way for so so many beautiful fishes out there.
