So I'm in the middle of getting together the equipment for my new 210gal and lighting has been a big question for me. T5's or halides? Well?... How bout HID's. This is the fixture I've chosen to go with. Josh at Marine Aquaria is gonna hook me up. http://www.aquariumspecialty.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=28_517_518&products_id=3372. Something kinda new but looks pretty sweet. Does anyone have any feedback on using HID's? I remember a post in regards to a DIY HID setup but can't find it. Just wondering if anyone's had any luck with HID.

Those look so cool! If you try them out you should do a review on here about them.

I thought you were going FOWLR....HID bulb is just another MH in different format(please correct me if I am wrong). You are going to need at least 6 - 8 T5's for your tank without using MH. Mr Alberta had a good looking light set for sale

Correct, HID is High Intensity Discharge = MH. Its the term used for MH HPS Mercury Vapor lamps. And that fixture that Mr. Alberta has (had) for sale is really nice and a good price for what it is.

This is another article on the fixture. And yes the HID is another style of halide. http://www.reefbuilders.com/2008/10/31/aquaticlife-brings-new-metal-halide-standard-to-us-reefers/

Oh Yeah I remember that post. My new tank's 72" and is has a canopy as well so that one would have been a tough fit and a little too short but it is a heck of a nice looking fixture.

Ah, i never realized it was 6' but i guess when your in the 200+ range that generally puts you at about the 6' mark

i read up on HID lights once and my impression was that these lights need to be replaced every 3 to 4 months to maintain their intensities.

pretty much right, this is another case of the aquarium industry giving the same thing a new name, HID (High intensith dischage) lighting coveres eveything from MH to HPS and MV and probably a few others I forgot. it is a generic term not a type of bulb.

the bulbs in that pic look like a 150w MH with a socket on the end. so pretty much a SE 150 watt MH with a bi-pin mount instead of a mogal base.

plasma is old stuff also  the lumiarc was first mentioned here about 4 years ago.. but there were some issues to be sorted out yet.
