Herbie Overflow, dead silent! Or get your dog to bark at the snail making its way across the front glass, no chance of hearing the tank.

Try doing a search for 'Herbie style overflow'.

A herbie Overflow uses two stand pipes inside your overflow. One is you main drainage pipe and is used to take in water. The second pipe is above the water line in your overflow and is designed to take in air. This allows your main drain to act like a siphon, which allows more water through the standpipe because there is no air taking up space. This eliminates most of the noise associated with draining the water like the gurgling sounds. The second pipe is also there as an emergency drain if your main one backs up. This is the way I set up my tank due to all the advice on this forum, and I have to say Im glad I did. If you google "Herbie Overflow" you should get some answers. Check out ReefCentral (if their search is working) and different threads on Canreef. The tank build journals are great, the link below for fishytimes build is very helpful. Just remember he went with dual corner herbies (Probably similar to what you would want to go with).

I hate to plug my own build but it might help out as well. I went with a central herbie overflow, but your tank is almost double mine.

Actually, the 2nd standpipe is purely for emergency if the main drain gets blocked... It really has no function regarding Air/syphon for the main drain.

You can still run herbies... fishytime has duel overflows in his tank and runs a herbie in both... Works just fine...

Do you know where the noise is coming from? Is it from water splashing into the sump?

i havent posted in a while, but i have had some ups and downs with my tank. first i had an issue with all my snails gettin eaten, and my fish either disapering or getting injured and then found the culpret. it was a very large hermit crab that my sister-in-law gave me because it kept rearanging her tank. they are now in the sump. so i have been restocking a little. since my last post i have introduced some more zoas, a candy cane, a frog spawn, yelow tang, long nose hawkfish, and today i found my new best freind a fuzzy lionfish. will try to get pics later
