Finally set up!!!
Spent Friday and most of Saturday transfering my rock, stock and water from my old 33 gallon to my new (to me) 70 gallon RR. Used the existing 25 gallon sump, with the same Quiet One 3000 (found the 4000 that came with the tank just a little too much flow). Put in 40lbs of new sand, and about 40 additional pounds of rock. Added an ATO, Upgraded from the 2 70w halides I had to a 6 lamp T5HO tek (wicked bright!). Current inhabitents are 2 black clowns, 2 RBTA, 1 cleaner shrimp,
1 sixline wrasse, and 1 red banded goby with his never-seen pistol shrimp. And various corals of course.

Plan on playing with the aquascaping a bit, and upgrading the superskimmer 65.

Future additions planed:
1 Neon Goby

Will add pics tonight when I find my camera. :noidea:

Wondering what you're planning to do with the 4000? I am running 3000's in both my tanks and am wishing that I had more power. Let me know if you'd be interested in getting rid of that and how much.

And the tank looks great!!! I've got a 70 and you've done a good job with that tank already.

Might put a y in my return line and split the flow into 2. If not, will let you know.

Added a vertex in-100 skimmer today (Thanks Red Coral) after reading the reviews on WWM by Bob Fenner. This thing is huge, had to revamp my sump a little by removing a baffle and making a stand for the 8" water level as my usual level is 11 inches.

Also bought a small purple crocea clam at RC while I was in Calgary visiting.

Will add more pics prob. tonight or tomorrow.

My inverts (corals, nems) have really taken off since I upgraded to this 70.

for a bit of safety id throw a hoseclamp on that return line where it stitches to the black hose, cause you know that hose will get hard and end up popping off when your not home

Was at J&l yesterday and picked up a few new additions.

Bought a small orchid dotty. (whos made friends with my hi-fin goby)
A tail spot blenny,
Emerald crab to help out with my bubbles.

In another post I asked about the Powder Brown tang. After much deliberation and reserch, (and the fact they were the only tang J&L had) I decided to get a small one.

Not even 15 min after going into the display he was out swimming with the clowns and sixline. Being worked over by the cleane shrimp,(ich free so far)And eating like crazy! Absolutly gorgeous fish. Will keep ya'll updated on his progress..

Also grabbed some PE mysis, and frozen formula 2

As for the Vertex, Im impressed. Its producing about 2 cups of skim a week (that will increase with the new additions). Fairly quiet, easy to clean, and I like the drain port feature.

Will post pix when I get em.

Its pretty small right now. About 1" but it's making the odd appearence. Staying on one side of the tank and only seems scared of the clown fish, the other fish dont scare it. He's swimming in and out of holes in the rock I didnt even know were there.

Being only 1 inch probably means it was tanked rasied which is awesome. Mine is certainly a rock dweller, it excavates a little hidey hole under some LR to sleep in. If it gets spooked it will dash to any number of known holes in the rock and then it's head pokes out somewhere to see what is going on.

Mine does not like crabs, if it sees a hermit outside it's main escape it gets all flashy and does the "move along" dance. Hermit is just oblivious though. :)

eat him. Hope he becomes the star attraction

Looking really good Trevor!! It looks like the tank is settling in well. What bulbs are you using in the Tek? When I got my first T5 fixture it took me forever to settle on bulbs...I was always changing them until I found something I like.

Don't get too attached to the Powder Brown though, he will outgrow your 70 gallon tank in a couple years. Not the best choice for a 36" tank.

Tank raised tangs very cool.

They were talking about the Orchid Dottyback possibly being tank raised, not the Tang. :)

Allready talked that over with Purple (my wife). And plan on upgrading to a 90-125 withing the next 2 years. The PB seems very happy, no hiding, pecking at the rocks, and loves anything with selcon on it (except nori so far)

Myka
09-15-2009, 01:55 AM
Lucky you!! You will be looking at a 6' tank to keep the PB permanently. Gorgeous fish though. I wish they didn't grow so big...or were such Ich magnets!!

7-8" (8.3" the record apparently) isnt that big, its one of the smaller tangs. However I know its gonna need a larger swimming area as it grows. All tangs are prone to ich as far as I know. I'm hoping with a varied diet with lots of vitamins and greens, plus the cleaner shrimp I can keep that down to a min. If I have to I'll get a uv sterilizer. But as I said, so far so good, not even a speck.

Anyhow, it's eating nori now, and trimming down all the various types of algea in my tank. Seems to like everything I put in the tank flake, pellets, nori, and various food foe carnivores that I feed the other fishies and corals.

Hmm, well when I got home from work last week my blenny and dottyback were MIA. No idea what happened to them. Also my female black and white clown has what appears to be velvet, but only on the face and eyes. Have placed her in a hospital tank as her eyes are bad enough she is having trouble finding food. Will be treating copper begining tomorrow. Purple will be playing fish doc. while I'm away at work. Hopefully things are looking better when I get home again.

Just an update.

The female black clown didnt make it. Also been having some problems with vanishing fish. No bodies found and fish appear fine the day before they are discovered "gone". So far In the last 5 months I have lost:

1 orchid dotty
1 tail spot blenny
1 small powder brown tang

No carpet surfers, bones on any other signs found.

Other than that and diatoms on the sand bed things are going well. Added a yellow tang last week and it seems happy. Getting good coral growth all around.
One of my RBTA split and Im working on getting one of the clones to move to another rock so I can sell/trade it.

Gonna add two more power heads and a sand goby to knock down the diatoms. Thinking of going with 2 korelia 2s placed mid tank level pointing down at a 45 degree angle.

Just got back from a week holiday to find all my sps dead, (some I just recived from whatcaneyedo less than a month ago.) lps bleached or dead. sixline wrasse dead, banded goby dead, sleeper goby dead. Anenomes bleached to a light pink.

Tank temp was at 98f. skimmer wasnt workin (pump stopped) Only things that seem ok are the zoas and my crocea (go fuiger)

Yellow tang and 2 clowns seem unaffected as well.

Tank sitter never bothered to phone or anything.

Will be doing two successive 30% water changes today.

Next time I hire a proffesional!

cant find my am,trite kits, but Im gonna assume they are/were high. just gonna keep doing water changes, run carbon, skim wet and pray I dont loose anything else I I dont get a major algea bloom.

Want to move away from IO salt anyhow, this should use it up quick.

Thanks everyone. May just have to take a few of you up on the offer once the system is stable again.

As for my spare pump, it's not spare anymore, its on my frag tank in the basement (thank God I set that up a month ago and transfered a few frags to it.)

On a possitive note, I was peeking in my sump today and to my total suprise my big poci colony that I raised from a 1" frag (and couldn't stand to throw in the trash so I tossed it in the sump) was showing POLYPS! Its still totally white though so placed it back in the tank. I dont hold alot of hope for it, but ya never know.

My nems still look like crap. Loonie sized, hiding, and bright pink. (should be bright red).

The heads of frogspawn I managed to salvage are expanding, but still really washed out. Duncans are fine. Other than that and the impossible to kill palys, and zoas thats about all I have left.

Sorry about the tank. It really makes me think about taking a holiday! Hope the poci makes it.
