Well yestarday I took down the other tank and set up the 55g. I ended up getting what I needed in the mail. I am just waiting for the T5 lights which should arrive in the mail sometime around 10:30am.
Here are some pics of my progress of setting it up.
This is the empty tank sitting on the stand. Yes. I managed to get it up there all by myself. It was really heavy, but I was able to manipulate it by getting the end up first and then raising the rest up.
For leveling I put two boards underneath. This also ensures that the front and back rims of the tank are securely supported as otherwise it would not have fit. Thankfully I had those boards laying around from an old tv stand I used to have.

Tank shot tonight. Water is getting clearer. Once I get more rock in there tomorrow I will update with more pics. For now though all my fish are happy with the new room they have, especially my clownfish.

Thanks. I am just happy all my fish are really enjoying it. I am getting the 30lbs more live rock tomorrow from a guy in my area who is taking down his one tank, so I am hoping I get some good hitchickers with it. I asked others how his stuff was and they all had good things to say.
I also find the larger size much more entertaining to watch.

Ever wonder why people would want an urchin?
Here is the answer;

And after he was done that spot. All nice and clean:

Once the other powerhead is done, it is on to this one next. Oh and you can just make out my BTA in the back right corner there. Happily sitting in his favourite spot away from the T5 lighting.

http://i382.photobucket.com/albums/oo269/nebthet1/Saltwater2/55g%20Reef/octo1.jpg
Pods have significantly increased and there is no where I look where there aren't any. If things continue that way, I may consider a red mandarin goby.
The damsel is still being submissive to the other fish and has began to pick at the algae growing rather than eating the fish flakes. He remains to be fat and happy. He has a new territory around the skimmer intake and outtake (which the later I need to develop some s piping to reduce microbubble issues).
The baby Onyx are doing very well. It is a pain in the derier though to keep cleaning the breeding net. I am going to get one of those plastic critter keepers and drill small holes in it. I think with a little cleaning magnet it will help and the clowns will be big enough then not to slip through.
Of new hitchhikers I have with this tank there are 8 brittle stars, spaghetti worms. I have also been following along with the baby tubo snails I have had. There are still 2 of them in there and they have continued to grow steadily.
The sun coral has a bunch of new mouths growing on it. One of them is orange which was an awsome suprise. I would like to get a black sun coral eventually.
My Metallic Green BTA is happy in his spot on the top right corner. It doesn't seem to mind the water changes, when the water level goes down and then back up. So as long as it is happy, so am I.
Future plans for the tank:
- Red Mushrooms - only 1-2 to start they can do their thing on their own.
- Torch Coral frag
- Hammer coral frag
- SPS frags, for which I will hold out for an Oregon Tort.
- Black sun coral
- Firefish Goby
- Mandarin Goby (big maybe)
Looking good! Gorgeous Percula! Have you been monitoring ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate during the move?
Nebthet
06-04-2009, 10:04 PM
Yes I have definately been monitoring all of that since the move, especially since I expected a soft cycle with the new live sand.
As of June 2nd, my perameters were the following:
Salinity: 1.025
Ammonia: 0
Nitrate: 0
Nitrite: 0
Calcium: 380 (touch low for acropora, but didn't want to start adding extras in yet.)
Alkalinity: 4.5 meq/l
PH: 8.3
I am checking my perameters about once per week the day before doing a water change.
When I first did the change over there was a small cycle where the nitrates got between 5-10 but that was expected.

Got some new inhabitants today.
First thing is the juvi picasso. They are grade B (right now), but have yet to develop their tail bar. My guy is just beginning his.
I can't believe the difference in colour between the picasso and my Onyx. My Onyx are much more red by far.
As for the baby Onyx. There is also a pic here of the larger one showing the mid-stripe from the bottom.

http://i382.photobucket.com/albums/oo269/nebthet1/Saltwater2/55g%20Reef/dendro1-07-2009.jpg
The red mushies are getting larger and larger by day. I put the 3rd one over with the other two when I made room for the new LPS.

I have some new pics now to add.
This acro is continuing to encrust over the dead portions. I don't know what type it is, but when the actinics or moonlights are on the polyps glow green.
http://i382.photobucket.com/albums/oo269/nebthet1/Saltwater2/55g%20Reef/acro1-07-28-2009.jpg
This acro, which I am thinking is a tri-color valida or Cali Tort (other side has green flourescents). It is slowly deepening its' purple colouring.
http://i382.photobucket.com/albums/oo269/nebthet1/Saltwater2/55g%20Reef/acrotort1-07-28-2009.jpg
Right tank shot from today. My BTA is happy, Octo frog extended out again and on the mend. The hammer and branching frogspawn are happy, and the red mushies are doing well. I also moved a set of candy canes over to this side of the tank as there is a little less flow there.
http://i382.photobucket.com/albums/oo269/nebthet1/Saltwater2/55g%20Reef/rts07-28-2009.jpg
Here is my larger baby clownfish Omen. As you can see his mid-bar is coming in nicely and is surrounded by black. It appears even on both sides and I am hoping it doesn't misbar. Also, the black around the head-bar is thicker.
http://i382.photobucket.com/albums/oo269/nebthet1/Saltwater2/55g%20Reef/Omen1-07-28-2009.jpg
My smaller baby clown, Runt is slowly developing his mid-bar. As you can see now, it is larger than a pin head and developing on both sides.
http://i382.photobucket.com/albums/oo269/nebthet1/Saltwater2/55g%20Reef/runt1-07-28-2009.jpg
Here are all 4 of my clowns so you can see the size difference. Omen is now at the size where I could release him into the main tank if I wanted to, but I'm not..... yet. I am arranging to set up a 25g reef flats tank and will be putting the Picasso and Runt in there.
http://i382.photobucket.com/albums/oo269/nebthet1/Saltwater2/55g%20Reef/clownfam1-07-28-2009.jpg

Well I went to Toronto and picked up some SPS from a fellow hobbyist from another site. Nematoad. Some may know him here, he goes by another name, shrimp something, but I cannot remember it right now.
I have to say I am very happy with my purchase. He kept them in his tank after cutting them for a couple of weeks to ensure they were well healed before I got them.
When I brought them home I did a quick water change in my tank of only 5%, temp acclimated the sps and put them in. Within an hour the polyps were extending on all of them.
These are all nice healthy frags. (These are the quality of frags a certain seller should be giving to people ...)
So here are some before and after 1 hr pics.

Ok, time for an update, it has been a few weeks.
I have finally removed the container from my system and let my baby Onyx's roam free within the tank.
My main reason for doing this is because I believe the container was leaching phosphors into the tank since right after the cyano algea started going haywire.
So now with the container removed and I have reduced my lighting to 6hrs a day right now with water changes it has started to disipate.
I have to get new chemi-pure this week and I am going to buy seperate activated carbon to help out as well, I am at my 6 month mark for them.
So here are some pictures.

Finally Pics of my baby clowns. Some are blurry some similar, but they show them free in the tank now and I think they may finally be developing colour.
I have been very lucky that neither of my 2 larger clowns, Big Momma and Jigsaw, have been overly aggressive towards the babies. I think that is mainly due to the fact I kept them in the container within the same tank so they could see each other.
They all keep to opposite corners of the tank from each other. Big Momma and Jigsaw have paired up together. They make their hourly rounds and check in with the babies making sure they submit to them, but there has been no fin nipping or other unneccesary roughness.
On another note, my blue damsel doesn't seem to give a crap about the babies being lose in the tank. He doesn't bother them what so ever, even when he is among them trying to score some food.

Your not at all worried about your "big buck" clowns killing each other in the same tank? I would be.....
Actually they have been extremely passive with each other. They really don't bother each other too much and both the larger clowns go over to the little ones frequently and there is no chasing around any more, they all rub up against each other and then back off to their respective corners of the tank.
Now the one thing I had been informed, which helps, is to always keep your clowns in pairs and they will be less likely to fight. Now if I had only one baby in there, there would more of a change for the male to take out the other male and there seems to be some good research to support this.
Either way, just in case, I do have a 25g set up just in case.
A think the success factor also came by keeping the babies within a container in the same tank, so the other two clowns were able to see them all the time over the last 5 months, and the younger clowns would do the submissive dance to them through the container.
In the wild, clownfish have tendancy to live in groups within a large anemone with one female, one male and a bunch of unsexed adults. I think within our aquarium standards, it depends on the size of the tank a person has and how the new fish are introduced.
Most hobbyists get their fish as adults and introduce them that why, however I think if you can get your hands on baby fish, less than an inch and raise them yourself within the same tank where the other fish can see them and not feel threatened by them, then there is a much higher chance of survival.

I agree. There is the off chance that they will start to fight when they get older but I think its more likely they will be ok with each other. You'll have 1 Female 1 Male 1 unsexed. As long as they tolerate the unsexed guy you will be fine.

No thanks, but I appreciate the offer. Now that I know the peppermint is killing the peppermints, I am gonna have to get AiptasiaX to use.
The stupid shrimp actually killed both of the peppermints I got today.. I had never heard of cleaner shrimp killing peppermints either and they had both been doing fine in my system and had started picking at the aiptasia, but didn't make it 3 hours before the cleaner had them. Grr.
But at least I love the elegance and mardarin I got.. At least the like of those is overriding my distain for the cleaner shrimp right now.

Nice pickups! The clam looks great. I've been waiting on a Crocea shipment here, but I keep missing out on them :(
My peps have always been killed by my cleaners - I have one and I*think* it's still alive. Previous to that I've tried twice and the Cleaner was always really agressive towards it.

Jim has different sizes in right now. The size mine is he is selling for $48, he has slightly smaller ones for $38, Large for $60 and Extra Large for $100. They are all really nice super blues and greens I was drooling.
The elegance corals he has up there too are really awsome in coloration.
He also had lots of picasso clownfish, some naked clowns, b&w clowns in too.
My mom was trying to convince me to buy a b&w clown and I had to keep telling her "No".

Well it has been over a month without any updates. I have continued to have some highs and lows but things are all working themselves out now.
Lost a few heads of candy canes... but not all of them.
I managed to clean off some of the algae from the back of the tank.... what a pain in the arse.. I don't know how some people keep it so clean.. within a few days though the algae was growing back.
So I made an order, and got myself some Phoseguard by Seachem, the 500ml bottle. Used about 3/4 of it and put it in the AC70.
Within a week I have noticed a reduction in the bryopsis, but the hair aglae (which I have less of) is still going strong.), but I don't mind the looks of where it is in patches right now.
I have started dosing for Calcium and Alkalinity. I am using Kent Tech A & B, in addition to Kent Coral-Accel. The later two I am dosing 6ml each, and 10ml of the Accel.
Within the first day of using this, I noticed all my SPS seemed sooo much happier. Polyp extension noticeably imbroved and so has color.
The baby clowns are still doing good. They are getting a little more harassed now that I put my Koralia3 back in this tank to get more flow. I am now up to 48x.
Elegance is still doing nicely. My large female clown still is testing it out for hosting. Took me a month to even get some decent shots of her buried in it.
So to the pictures: (Note: All these shots are taken with flash so you don't get the nice flourescent colors of the corals like you otherwise would see... :( )
Omen is still growing and is almost the size of Jigsaw the picasso now. I would say less than half an inch difference.
As you can see though, he still hasn't developed the Onyx coloration.

Looking preety darn good man....you may want to re-think your use of "phosguard".....it contains aluminum, which irritates a lot of corals....a better choice would be one of the GFO based products like "rowaphos" etc.

Thanks for the compliment. It is certainly coming along now.
I was in a pinch for the phosphate remover and from the stores available closest to me.. Phosguard was pretty much it.. but I will take a look for the GFO stuff. I am just thankfull my corals are all looking better now.
I am going to need to replace some clean up crew soon though, and most definately get an emerald crab or two... Bubble Algae is popping up everywhere.

Time for more pix.
Blenny cleaning up nicely.. in the FTS you can see where on the back of the tank.
New skimmer breaking in nicely. Microbubbles getting smaller and fewer. Fish don't seem to care.
Dosing some Tech-M to help with bryopsis.. some corals started coloring up when I started doing this.. just following directions on bottle and dosing 12ml twice a week.
Moved my Crocea clam from the sand bed.. where he was attached to the bottom of the tank to the rockwork instead.. He was a little PO'd at first, but shimmied a little bit and took to his new spot.

Zoas looking happier and coloring up. I even tore off a frag to trade with someone in ONT.

Skimmer with the drain going back in the tank, as per the instructions, for the first 2 weeks until it breaks in and starts to accumulate skimmate. Thank god for the drain, otherwise I would have been standing constantly at my tank emptying the cup for these 2 weeks.

Unknown Acro#1, is branching out more in the back, but you can definately see here the improvement in the polyp extension.

http://i382.photobucket.com/albums/oo269/nebthet1/Saltwater2/55g%20Reef/digisactinic02-26-2010.jpg
The Remora is just about done breaking in... Since I dose in my tank I am giving it an extra week to break in since I didn't want to stop dosing during the breakin period.
Mrs Blenny... which I am gonna name Sam the Eagle anyways.. continues to decimate the hair algae.
The combination of the blenny and Tech-M supplimentation has really helped to control this, rather than just using Tech-M and raising mag to 1500. This seems a more natural solution and my corals are loving it.

Got my new frags in the mail today from a fellow Ontario Reefer.
Red MontiCap. This one has a nice bright red coloration under the actinics. I can't wait to see it grow.
http://i382.photobucket.com/albums/oo269/nebthet1/Saltwater2/55g%20Reef/redcap03-16-2010.jpg
The one on the left is new. I am not sure which one it is, but figure it is one of the tricolors. Time will tell as it colors up.
http://i382.photobucket.com/albums/oo269/nebthet1/Saltwater2/55g%20Reef/newacro4-03-16-2010.jpg
This one has more of a bluish tinge than a purple with a bit of a green base to it. It is very nice looking and polyps have extended out already.
http://i382.photobucket.com/albums/oo269/nebthet1/Saltwater2/55g%20Reef/newacro3-03-16-2010.jpg
This is the green thinbranching deepwater acro. It has a really nice light green coloration and even more so when under actinics. It didn't come on a frag plug, but I found a place for it, and hope it will encrust without issues.
http://i382.photobucket.com/albums/oo269/nebthet1/Saltwater2/55g%20Reef/newacro2-03-16-2010.jpg
Two of the newer frags. I am almost certain the one on the right is a tricolor. Don't know what the one on the left is. It has a bluish tinge too. I am gonna have to buy an army of peppermint shrimp to deal with the aiptasia.. it is beginning to drive me nuts.
http://i382.photobucket.com/albums/oo269/nebthet1/Saltwater2/55g%20Reef/newacro1-03-16-2010.jpg
The one on the left is new. More than likely another tricolor.
http://i382.photobucket.com/albums/oo269/nebthet1/Saltwater2/55g%20Reef/newacro05-03-16-2010.jpg
The two new chalices. Toxic on the left and Multicolor/Rainbow on the right.

This is a purple encrusting montipora.
http://i382.photobucket.com/albums/oo269/nebthet1/Saltwater2/55g%20Reef/redmonti03-16-2010.jpg
This was one of the freebies I was sent. I think it is a superman monti... :) I have another frag of the same to that was also sent.. It is larger, but a little paler.. I am holding it for another reefer who wants to try his hand at sps.
http://i382.photobucket.com/albums/oo269/nebthet1/Saltwater2/55g%20Reef/superman03-16-2010.jpg
The larger of the same type of frag.
http://i382.photobucket.com/albums/oo269/nebthet1/Saltwater2/55g%20Reef/frag2-03-16-2010.jpg
I accidentally broke a branch off my purple tipped monti.. The tip is sitting vicariously on the live rock right now but not sliding anywhere so it will either encrust there or I will be giving it to Systemtool as well.
It is a fast growing sps so I am not worried much and the digi is no worse for where.
http://i382.photobucket.com/albums/oo269/nebthet1/Saltwater2/55g%20Reef/digis03-16-2010.jpg
View of the long narrow with the new Acros added. Much nicer looking now.
http://i382.photobucket.com/albums/oo269/nebthet1/Saltwater2/55g%20Reef/longnarrow03-16-2010.jpg
Now... One thing I will say.. I hate hate hate hate hate ... reef epoxy. That crap just doesn't like to stick. It is a pain in the arse and when it does stick a few months later the frags loosen off the rocks. Grrr. They need to make something a lot better than that stuff.

Looking good!
Try a sandwich - cyanoacrylate (crazy ) gel glue - epoxy - gel glue - frag/rock. Works like a charm. The epoxy gives an exact contoured substrate for the gel glue to bond the rocks together so it holds pretty tight. Just make sure to use a lot of glue as the glue cures instantly on contact with water - basically you need a big glob :)

thanks I will try that because I am so not happy with the reef stuff being sold and I have tried a few types with the same results. The glue will be interesting.

Pix Update: All the new sps and chalices seem to be doing well. The only one not is the monti confusa, but it is hanging in there and I hope it will encrust then color up. Time will tell.
First for the fish.
Runt is still small, but has learned his place in the hierarchy of the tank and is not picked on as much as before. At least he is not alone in the one corner any more but Omen joins him most the time.
http://i382.photobucket.com/albums/oo269/nebthet1/Saltwater2/55g%20Reef/runt03-22-2010.jpg
Omen is doing well and continues to color up. I find it interesting how the development of colors of clownfish differ when they are in a tank by themselves compared to when they are in a tank with other clownfish of the same species. It seems there development is a lot slower color and size wise when that happens. As long as they are healthy I am happy though. It a couple more months I will have had them for a year.
http://i382.photobucket.com/albums/oo269/nebthet1/Saltwater2/55g%20Reef/omen03-22-2010.jpg
Jigsaw is the main bully of the tank. He puts Omen and Runt in their place all the time. At least it is not as aggressive as it could be. He shows pairing/breeding behaviour with Big Momma. Time will tell if they will be successful.
http://i382.photobucket.com/albums/oo269/nebthet1/Saltwater2/55g%20Reef/jigsaw03-22-2010.jpg
Big Momma always boots around the whole tank. She also puts the younger ones in their place from time to time, and can be a little more aggressive than Jigsaw, but the babies have learned how to quickly get behind the live rock where she can't reach them.
http://i382.photobucket.com/albums/oo269/nebthet1/Saltwater2/55g%20Reef/mommaelegance03-22-2010.jpg
Sam the Eagle, named after the muppet character she resembles, continues to boot around the tank eating algae and some flake food.
http://i382.photobucket.com/albums/oo269/nebthet1/Saltwater2/55g%20Reef/blenny03-22-2010.jpg
The Xenia in my tank is making a come back now. I am hoping it continues to grow and spread more. I really like the stuff. One day I may regret these words but right now I don't. I have major algae and aptasia issues so Xenia is the least of them.
http://i382.photobucket.com/albums/oo269/nebthet1/Saltwater2/55g%20Reef/xenia03-22-2010.jpg
These pink eyes zoas are doing really well now from what they were a month ago. They have grown bigger and so have their skirts. I am really happy about that. I find it rather interesting because my skimmer is draining back into the tank, from the collection cup drain, but through some polyfill first, so I have to wonder if the improvement is the skimmer or the additives. Hmmmmm.
http://i382.photobucket.com/albums/oo269/nebthet1/Saltwater2/55g%20Reef/pinkeyezoa03-22-2010.jpg
Duncans are happy as usual. Once I get the aiptasia issue in my tank resolved I may move them to another area so they can spread more.
http://i382.photobucket.com/albums/oo269/nebthet1/Saltwater2/55g%20Reef/duncans03-22-2010.jpg
Mr Clam has been slowly shifting himself closer and closer to the sand every day. I am hoping he stays in this spot rather than going to sand. I don't want him to attach to the tank bottom.
http://i382.photobucket.com/albums/oo269/nebthet1/Saltwater2/55g%20Reef/clam03-22-2010.jpg
The Chalices are doing well. The aiptasia that was right beside the green chalice has decided it doesn't like to touch it and has shrunk. Hmmm... Makes me want to buy a hundred chalices to put every where there is aiptasia. LOL.
http://i382.photobucket.com/albums/oo269/nebthet1/Saltwater2/55g%20Reef/chalices03-22-2010.jpg
This encrusting monti is doing ok. Keeping it's color. It is more of a blue/purple with red polyps than my pic shows.
http://i382.photobucket.com/albums/oo269/nebthet1/Saltwater2/55g%20Reef/encrusting03-22-2010.jpg
This is a multicolor monti, very close to the superman monti. It's colors have brightened within the last week and the red polyps are starting to show more. When I put it in it's place I accidentally turned it so the larger piece is turned away from the front of the tank, so I hope it starts growing a bit faster.
http://i382.photobucket.com/albums/oo269/nebthet1/Saltwater2/55g%20Reef/multimonti03-22-2010.jpg
The Red MontiCap is doing well. The sides have colored up and are showing new polyps, so I can't wait to see how it will grow when it does start.
http://i382.photobucket.com/albums/oo269/nebthet1/Saltwater2/55g%20Reef/redmonticap03-22-2010.jpg
I am not sure which type of Acro this is. I am thinking a blue tenuis. It's polyps are slowly coming out. Don't mind the bit of algae string on it. It came loose after the pic was taken.
http://i382.photobucket.com/albums/oo269/nebthet1/Saltwater2/55g%20Reef/tenuis1-03-22-2010.jpg
This Acro, I think it is the cereulus or something like that... It is continuing to grow nicely and slowly encrusting the plug it is on.
http://i382.photobucket.com/albums/oo269/nebthet1/Saltwater2/55g%20Reef/cereluus03-22-2010.jpg
This one fell off the top where it was beside the green bottlebrush. It is rather hardy as it didn't faze the coral one bit. I am thinking this is one of the tricolors, or another tenuis. eventually as it grows I will figure it out.
http://i382.photobucket.com/albums/oo269/nebthet1/Saltwater2/55g%20Reef/tricolor1-03-22-2010.jpg
The Green Bottlebrush is doing very well. It is now developing new branches and encrusting more on the bottom portion.
http://i382.photobucket.com/albums/oo269/nebthet1/Saltwater2/55g%20Reef/bottlebrush03-22-2010.jpg
The Green Thin Branching Deepwater acro fell off of where I puttied it. I hate epoxy.. hate hate hate it.. but at least it is happy where it fell so I am gonna leave it there. It's polyps are out. So I am taking that as a good indicator and it hasn't lost any color.
http://i382.photobucket.com/albums/oo269/nebthet1/Saltwater2/55g%20Reef/greenbranch03-22-2010.jpg
On the left, my purple tipped digi has healed very quickly where the one branch broke off. The middle one is another blue tenuis I think, and the one on the right is the true tri-color. That one fell from it's epoxied place originaly and I replaced it there.. that is how I broke the digi... but it hasn't moved since and it now has the black polyps extending so it appears happy there. No RTN showing from where I handled it so a super healthy frag.
http://i382.photobucket.com/albums/oo269/nebthet1/Saltwater2/55g%20Reef/digtentrue03-22-2010.jpg
Another tri-color on the left is doing nicely with polyp extension now. The unknown on the right is really growing now. At least 1 to 2mm in the last week and a half. The tips have become a dark bluey purple and the rest is more of a flourescent white. It is even encrusting on the base more. I am happy to see this after more than a year having it in my tank. The second pic is a shot of it from the back.

http://i382.photobucket.com/albums/oo269/nebthet1/Saltwater2/55g%20Reef/unknown1-03-22-2010.jpg
Over all the tank is doing ok.. I have emailed berghia.net and they have confirmed they can ship their nudis to Canada without issues so I am gonna be making a good order for a few of them to get rid of the aiptasia in my tank. Then I am gonna get an emerald crab to try to take care of that darn bubble algae.

This one has stn in the front from the aiptasia I think. It could be something out but I cannot make out any bugs on it. The black dots on this one are where polyps used to be. The whole thing is also more of a red pink color than the beige tricolor it used to be.

Wow Nebthet you have alot of Aiptasia. Forgive me if I've asked before but you have tried Aiptasia-X right? I got some from Jim and I love it. Its working wonders for me. I've reduced my numbers to almost nothing now in my 190. Surely you could control it in a 55 with it. If you ever frag some stuff let me know I have some and would love to trade.

Yes I have tried Aiptasia X in my system several times.
It appears to melt the aiptasia away and they won't be there for about a week or two after I use the stuff, but then suddenly one day they are back and same size as before. It's crazy.
I have been considering getting some peppermint shrimp, but I have a bad feeling my bengaii cardinal will make a meal out of them, and now that my sps are growing well, I don't wanna get an aiptasia eating file because they are noted for going for sps polyps.
So, I am gonna order in some berghia nudibranchs in from the states. Berghia.net has verified they ship to Canada and the prices for them are cheaper since our dollar is on par right now and their price includes all duties, Plus they ship to you door and not for pick up an airport.
I can't wait to see the aiptasia go. The aiptasia in my tank is a lot worse than my pics show. I bet I have around 250 or more in there.
I am very happy my SPS are doing so well now. My green branching one that was behind my digis got moved behind my live rock but is still getting light and browing, but I can't get any good pics of it now. The Monti Confusa while browned out is in a shaded area and likes it there better. Odd.

Get the peppermints - I don't have any aiptasia in my display or frag tanks because of them. Much cheaper than getting berghias from the states. Berghias are no guarantee either - they can be stung and killed by aiptasia, and fish will eat them too.
All those frags are looking great! When are you coming around for more??

Near end of the month pic updates and as you can see the SPS are still growing like weeds.
The one tip on this one rtn'd a bit after a hermit got up there picking at it, but has since stopped. It is growing out nicely now and coloring up to a nice purple more and more. I am still trying to determine what type of Acro this one is.
http://i382.photobucket.com/albums/oo269/nebthet1/Saltwater2/55g%20Reef/unknownacro05-22-2010.jpg
This Tru TriColor is still growing decently. It continues to encrust the base and I am hoping it completes it before the stupid holdfast epoxy decides to let loose.
http://i382.photobucket.com/albums/oo269/nebthet1/Saltwater2/55g%20Reef/tricolor05-22-2010.jpg
The Red MontiCap is doing really nicely. It is twice the size as when I first got it and is about a week or two away from starting to encrust on the tonga branch end just behind it.
http://i382.photobucket.com/albums/oo269/nebthet1/Saltwater2/55g%20Reef/redmonti05-22-2010.jpg
The Tricolor on the left is starting to show growth now. It has grown about 5cm in the last couple of weeks and it is coloring up purple on the tips.
The previously unknown on the right, is actually a frag of an ORA Joe the Coral. It took a while to determine it for certain as I was juggling between that and blue-tipped tenuis (which is the same thing, but with less white coloring).
http://i382.photobucket.com/albums/oo269/nebthet1/Saltwater2/55g%20Reef/joetricolor05-22-2010.jpg
The back end of the Joe the Coral and the Tricolor, showing more of the white on the Joe with the long branching that is happening.
http://i382.photobucket.com/albums/oo269/nebthet1/Saltwater2/55g%20Reef/backend05-22-2010.jpg
The Digis are doing just fine and the purple you can see the new branching happening more now. I am hoping that a portion of one of these branches of both the red and purple chooses to encrust on one of the live rocks for more stability. I don't trust epoxy any more.
http://i382.photobucket.com/albums/oo269/nebthet1/Saltwater2/55g%20Reef/digis05-22-2010.jpg
The Green Bottlebrush has now began encrusting onto the Tongan Branch, it is also continuing to grow quickly and the new branches are really taking off.

Blue tipped Tenuis and Tricolor are both still doing well. Not as much growth over the last month, but I have done a water change and moved a couple of things so I think that did something.

And to make Jacobnano happy, a one image FTS. As you can see. I took out a couple small rocks and in return added one large, and might I say heavy piece of LR to the right side of the tank. I had this rock in a 10g tank in the kitchen with no light on it, hence why it is sooo white.

Got some new stuff today and thought I would share.
Mini Sabae (~4" diameter). It will grow.. and I hope it likes it up in the right corner of the tank for now. I am hoping the juvi clowns will be hosted by it and get at least a little security there. It has a lot of room up there to expand as it grows and good gentle alternating flow.
http://i382.photobucket.com/albums/oo269/nebthet1/Saltwater2/55g%20Reef/sabae06-30-2010.jpg
Purple Tipped Elegance. This one, like my other, will take a few days to fully acclimate and expand in my tank. It is opening up as it is, which is nice. I considered getting the pink tipped one too but decided it would be better to wait.
http://i382.photobucket.com/albums/oo269/nebthet1/Saltwater2/55g%20Reef/purelegance06-30-2010.jpg
Orange and Green Bali BTA. It is rather small ~2.5inch in diameter and was attached to one of my new clams when I got it. It came off when acclimating in the bag in the tank and so I placed it mid tank on the rock allowing it to get to an area with a little shade. Now that I don't have a stupid cleaner shrimp in the tank, I don't have to worry as much about having food stolen from it when feeding. (Hermits are easy to keep occupied elsewhere.I wish I could capture the true color on this one.

Moved some of the new ones around today and took a few more pictures.
Blue Crocea: I moved this guy to the rocks in a split by the one tricolor I have. It seems much happier here. The pic doesn't do it justice. With full lights it looks more deep purple than blue.
Here is a pic without flash then with flash.

My ultra Crocea I got back in Oct.2009
It moved to the sand and it seems happiest there butted up against the rock.

Better pic of the pink rainbow chalice.
http://i382.photobucket.com/albums/oo269/nebthet1/Saltwater2/55g%20Reef/chalice07-01-2010.jpg
I moved the purple tipped elegance down to the sand beside my other elegance. I am hoping this one makes it. It is stressed out and hasn't expanded much yet. But there is no tearing on the sides, no brown jelly or strings coming off of it. It is just retracted most the time right now. When expanding, the tentacles appear long, not bulbous and the rest of the flesh doesn't puff up unnaturally. Yes, it is Indo and I am aware these ones don't make it half the time.
http://i382.photobucket.com/albums/oo269/nebthet1/Saltwater2/55g%20Reef/elegances07-01-2010.jpg
My GSP has finally attached to the rock behind it with the purple feather duster on it.. I eventually want to put one of my frag mags down there and it to encrust on that and then move it to the back wall of the tank to grow.

The little sebae has settled down a little bit in it's place. Now comes the hard part and getting it back to health. After a lot of research last night on several sites these things are not naturally white or yellow in the wild, they are brown. They become this way when collected by the export companies by leaving them without light for a length of time causing them to loose their interal algae they need to live. This guy is a little more yellowish today than yestarday and I have him on the rock high in the tank under the direct light. I will be feeding it mysis shrimp every couple of days for a long while until it starts coloring up again.
http://i382.photobucket.com/albums/oo269/nebthet1/Saltwater2/55g%20Reef/sebae07-01-2010.jpg
My first ever frag of the Red MontiCap. It is just a tiny less than half inch piece right now, but am hoping for good growth. It has really colored up over the last 24 hours.
http://i382.photobucket.com/albums/oo269/nebthet1/Saltwater2/55g%20Reef/Montifrag07-01-2010.jpg
Xenia. I took a hammer to the rock it was on when I removed it from the tank so that I could move the xenia down to the sand of the tank. It seems it likes it alot better than being closer to the lights.
http://i382.photobucket.com/albums/oo269/nebthet1/Saltwater2/55g%20Reef/xenia07-01-2010.jpg
My juvi clown Omen (right) and Runt (left). They use the overhang cave now to hide when needed from the bigger clowns. As you can see they have the Onyx undertones to their skin, the black coloration just needs to come through. It is, just very slowly. I have heard from others it can take up to 18 months for an Onyx to get it's coloration. I believe it and I am thinking this rule comes into play when they are in tanks with other clowns. Otherwise if they were in their own tank they would color up faster. But that is just my theory.
http://i382.photobucket.com/albums/oo269/nebthet1/Saltwater2/55g%20Reef/juviclowns07-01-2010.jpg
New Front Tank Shot. As you can see, I took out the Koralia 4, the juvi clowns still have plenty of caves and powerheads on the other side of the tank to hide if they need to.

Thanks Greenmaster. This recent heatwave has set the sps back a bit, but almost everything else is happier than ever.
Here are some of the pix from tonight.
My tiny xenia frag seems to like the bottom of the tank better than mid tank.
http://i382.photobucket.com/albums/oo269/nebthet1/Saltwater2/55g%20Reef/xenia07-11-2010.jpg
Tricolor, Blue tipped Tenuis and MontiCap: These guys are a little worse for wear but survived the heatwave. The tenuis and MontiCap lost some color, but their polyps are still alive and I hope for a good recovery.
http://i382.photobucket.com/albums/oo269/nebthet1/Saltwater2/55g%20Reef/podacros07-11-2010.jpg
My Orange and Green BTA moved itsself down into a crevice during the heatwave. I actually like it here a little better as it is more protected and in a much easier place to be able to feed mysis. I really wish I had the skills to show the real color on this anemone. It's nuts.
http://i382.photobucket.com/albums/oo269/nebthet1/Saltwater2/55g%20Reef/bta07-11-2010.jpg

The Purple Tipped elegance is looking a lot happier after the heat wave. I am hoping that eventually it will expand like my white tipped one.
http://i382.photobucket.com/albums/oo269/nebthet1/Saltwater2/55g%20Reef/pte07-11-2010.jpg
My gsp are no longer PO'd from the heat. It took them a couple of days to come back out. My duncans are happier than ever and the purple tipped elegance is happy in the background.
On either side of the gsp I placed a couple frag mags. Once the gsp grows on to it, I want to transfer them to the back glass of the tank.
http://i382.photobucket.com/albums/oo269/nebthet1/Saltwater2/55g%20Reef/gspdunel07-11-2010.jpg
New frag of duncans from a different source than my larger colony. These ones didn't have the green and their heads were smaller with shorter tentacles. I want to see if good feeding and similar tank conditions will get the mto grow into ones identicle to my larger colony.
Sadly I lost one head in this one, close to three tiny barnacles which I might have to take care of if they end up bothering the duncans. I hope I don't lose them.
http://i382.photobucket.com/albums/oo269/nebthet1/Saltwater2/55g%20Reef/newduncs07-11-2010.jpg
Front tank shot..Notice any thing different???...... finally got a decent algae scrapper, the mag flip to take care of the coraline algae. It takes a lot of work. Took two days of on and off again scrubbing to get rid of 95% of the algae on the bottom front glass.

Unfortunately a bad picture of my Sebae anemone. It is slowly getting healthier. The tentacles are extending themselves more every day and the color of a few of them near the base and up the tentacles is starting to darken. Once this guy is the proper healthy brown color, and larger it will be moved to a nicer area on the back of the tank where it can grow out segregated from everything else.

Thanks Greenmaster. I have gotten used to having little airbubbles in the tank from my skimmer. It doesn't seem to affect the livestock so I don't worry about it. At least I know my water is super oxygenated. LOL

Well I finally got my berghia nudis in the mail today from berghia.net. Didn't have a single problem with the delivery and didn't have to pay any customs on them (since they are also a registered business in Canada too.)
Here are some pictures of them. Most are a little blurry, since these guys are small but I couple turned out well. I ordered 8 of them to ensure a couple survived going into the tank and to have enough to take care of the aiptasia. I will keep you updated on the progress.

Finally, some new pix.
Of the hardware.. I got an RO unit. So instead of using tap water I am now going to me making some treated water. Eventually, if I need to I will get the DI part.
I also got a 12" frag rack as there are a few things I need to start making into frags.
Oh, and my other 21w par38 bulb came in the mail today from fishmonger1. Thx so much for that.
So, now to the new livestock.
Yep.. that's right.. another maxima clam. This one is close to the other one I have but has a blue rim instead of the green.

Thanks for the comments everyone... I always like to know what others think of my tank in case they have a good idea on what to change, and I want to get a little more active on here.
As for the lense.
I am using a Canon 100mm f2.8 usm macro lense. I bought it used and got it in the mail on thursday.
I can't wait to get my tripod from my mother so I can take decent pics of corals at the front of the glass.
And I can't wait til my clowns aren't paying attention one day and my turbos or myself can get a chance at the hair algae on the one section on the back of the tank.. it looks weird there now.

Thanks Doug. It has really come a long way and has a little bit to go. lol... I can't wait for the turbo snail to clean the hair algae off the clowns area in the back.... of course that is provided the clowns stop attacking them every time the turbo approaches.
I got those zoas off of Oceansdirect based out of Toronto. They are growing nicely in my tank and have multiplied. Can't wait for them to spread to the other rockwork. I have been trying to get some contrasting coloration to add dimension to the tank.
There are still certain corals on my wish list I want to get eventually, but I have been heavily debatting upgrading my tank to a 100g+, but I have to find the room in my apartment and I am worried a little about the transfering of the coral But it would give me sooo much more room.

there is definetly some growth happening. Have you ever tried to scrap the algae and coraline off the glass? It really makes the corals stand out when its clean. I use a kent pro scrap with a metal blade and it works like a charm.
Nebthet
12-19-2010, 09:40 PM
I have sort of used a scrapper when I had a major algae issue, but the turbo snails are slowly eating it. I have been more concerned with the RO water switchover. I made my first $100 in frag sales this month. yippee.. but man did I have to educate some people on proper tank husbandry and inform them they don't have the right lighting and perameters to keep corals healthy. Very frustrating.
I am in the process right now of either upgrading to a larger tank, or taking a 33g (36lx12wx18h) that I have in the bedroom and setting that one up in addition to this one. If I do that, I plan on making it an AIO system and using my PAR38 bulbs for the lighting.

Time for some new pix of my new stuff.
Ric Yumas. I traded some of my frags for this frag of three heads.. it now has two new heads starting on the rocks and these went from half an inch in size to almost 3 inches diameter. They are very happy in my tank.

Tank update: well unfortunately all my clams are dead. I am not sure of the definite cause, but I am thinking it was some sort of pathogen as only clams were affected for the most part, although some other corals were not happy when the clams started dying. They were withdrawn and the encrusting monti's started losing their colors.
Whatever it was, it was strange. It attacked the foot of the clam and killed it from the inside out. Right up to nearly the time of death, the clams would act normal from above, their mantles expanding and contracting, but you would have a hole you could see and mucous showing either from the side of the clam or through the foot.
Once I saw this I took the clams out, with one exception, and that was the clam my RBTA is attached to. It is very happy where it is and I don't want to screw that up.
After the two larger maximas died.. and oh how I loved my gold teardrop... :( ... and I did a large water change and put in new carbon the corals started improving and gaining their color back, very quickly I might add. You wouldn't know today that the encrusting monti's were almost all white.
My icefire is receeding now .. had rtn, but it has stopped so now I have almost all white stick in that area. Grr. But on the bright side, my green monti is darkening in color a lot. and everything else is growing just fine, especially the acans.
Now over the next month, I have to figure out how the heck I am going to move two juvi clowns out of this system into their own tank.. The bottle trick didn't work.. and trying to get the one from below during lights out didn't work either.. any thoughts?

Sorry to hear of the tank troubles. Sucks about the clams - but indeed once you get a pathogen in there like that they just go one by one. It's very disheartening.
FWIW though man that last set of macro photos are just stunner. You wouldn't know you're having frustrations based on those shots. Some very nice stuff there and really exquisite colours showing up. :)
Hope the upward trend continues.

If you are getting the exact same symptoms in your clams that I had in mine, where they are degrading from the foot up.. then I don't think it is your fish doing it.. I thought it was the hermits, bristleworms or something else bothering my clams, but when I took them out to do freshwater dips, there was nothing.. no pyramid snails nothing.. even in them until the mantle on top started deteriorating.
The only other thing I could think it is, is some sort of new treatment they are using for our local water sources that the clams don't agree with, but what ever is happening with the clams I know we are not the only ones to have the exact same issue and not know what it is.

So, a small update of pix for the month.
The Tricolor acro has been growing really quickly this month. It has grown over the part that was stung by the pocci before I moved it. It has also now developed new branches.

http://i382.photobucket.com/albums/oo269/nebthet1/Saltwater2/55g%20Reef/yuma02-15-2011.jpg
It is not very often I get the chance to take a pic of my Toxic Chalice. I have had it as long as the other one, but it nearly died. But its comeback has been explosive, at least in terms of growth. Almost twice that as my rainbow one. It is almost the size it was when I got it.

These are some green striped mushrooms I am looking after for a friend. They are almost the size of a dime right now for a couple of them. Most much smaller than that. They are coming back slowly from near nothingness. I can't wait to see how they turn out.

Just some quick updated shots of this tank. Not much has changed over the last month. I have three peppermint shrimp in this tank. They only come out at night. Two males and one female heavy with eggs right now.
Both bengaii cardinals are still in this tank, and the smaller one is not being picked on as much as before and so is able to eat more and is looking better.
Big Momma and Jigsaw are displaying more and more breeding behavior every week and they have been looking for a more suitable area attempt to lay a nest.

Been a long time since I updated so I thought I would give a quick one.
Tank is still going strong. I have no more room for new corals because I am out of space. I have purchased a used 75g, I just need to reseal the black trim onto the top of it and then save up more to set it up.
Xenia is growing everywhere, the sps are still doing well. Growing slower since I have let the tank balance itsself.
The only fish I have lost is the blue devil damsel, really no loss as she was a b**ch to any new fish added.
Clowns are continuing to lay, the sebae has gotten larger. RBTA has split, etc etc.
I added a couple new corals in Aug down at the bottom of the tank for now until the transfer. I have a monti Setosa, Ponape Birdsnest (so nice with yellow, green blue polyps and purple tips), and a purple monti cap. :) Really, other than fish, I don't want too many new corals.
So here are some pics. nothing great, as the front glass is starting to get the nasty film back on it that doesn't easily scrape off, so it was harder also to photograph some areas on an angle because of that.
setosa: These are really slow growers...
