I need help trying to figure out which skimmer to get for my 55g reef. It will be lightly stocked. It won't have a sump so I need a HOB model. I'm looking for something not too huge, quiet (as this tank will be in the living room) and fairly efficient, I do realize that the in sump versions are a bit more efficient. And I unfortunately have a bit of a budget, $200 or so.

I've been looking at the prism and the Aqua C remora and have heard mixed reviews on both. On my current tank I run a coralife super skimmer 220 and have been fairly happy with it. What are your opinions?

Thanks!

I am using the remora on my 55 gal tank and it works great. Real easy to set up and to clean.

Which remora are you using? The one with the maxi-jet 1200? Is it fairly quiet?

Yes I am using the Aqua C Remora with the maxi-jet 1200. It is quiet.

I am using the remora's with mag 3's and it is a little noisy depending on where the water
level is at in the tank, seems to me the lower the quieter. I am really happy with them
otherwise. It is all I have ever tried however. I have no sump's either.

I have used the Aqua C Remora on my 29 gallons reef tank. The skimmer is really good but I found it very noisy.

I will say that I have a huge bio load and it seems to do amazing stuff.

I had a Jebo hob skimmer on my 180. All I ever heard was bad things about them but I found: It was very quiet, The only sound was water going down a ramp about 2". It pulled about a cup of thick black goo every 4-6 days. It never leaked, not even a little bit. It was very easy to adjust. It cost me $30 on E-bay. I now have a bigger skimmer but I am keeping the Jebo for a future cube or something. These are my experiences yours may differ. I liked my Jebo:mrgreen:

I had a Remora about 10 years ago and it was just about the worst skimmer I've ever used (I think I actually had better results from my Seaclone so it's a toss up). It skimmed next to nothing, and was way too noisy (yes I'm aware of the mods to quieten them).

I haven't used this skimmer but I've read decent reviews and they cost about the same as a Remora: http://progressivereef.com/proddetail.php?prod=OCTBH100F

I have an Aqua-medic Blue T1000 HOB skimmer and I really like it. I don't use it as an HOB, I use in in sump. The big thing is that it's pretty freakin huge. Biggest HOB skimmer I've ever seen. It's pretty quiet and only uses 12W so I can't complain about power usage.

Had to get it from www.aquacave.com though.

Hmmm, I have heard good things about the octopus line of skimmers. It would be nice to talk to someone who has used one. I am having such a hard time figuring out what to go for, everyone says something different!
