Thar, she blows.

So much cyano, still. Oh well it's probably only about a quarter of what it was in late July.

I bought the materials to enclose the canopy yesterday to get that done. I've settled on LEDs and T5s as my lighting system so I can finally build. I hope it will also afford some cost savings now that the heat from the tank will be fully contained in the fish room.

Doesn't cyano suck to deal with in large tanks!!

For the back I used black limo tint from Canadian Tire on the 300 and it worked great.

I have nothing to say on the subject of cyano that will not earn me an insta ban at this point in time. I practice a lot of deep slow breathing when it comes to my tank lately.

My clam really seems to be enjoying the PAR38 bulb I keep over my refugium. It's shunned the MH I had specifically set up for it so much so that I shut it down.

http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/09/10/8a4edyjy.jpg

I'll have to make a trip to Canadian Tire and see what's around. Thanks for the tip.

I think I need a second autofeeder, one for each end of the tank. My fish who prefer the side opposing the feeder aren't getting their fair share and when people come to hand feed all you get is a swarm, see above.

Guess the good news is that I can probably offset it's cost with the sale of al the MH equipment I have. Ooh I'm practically salivating at all the extra space I'll have in the fishroom.

And for the record a fish room is the greatest thing I've ever done. Everything is in one room, it stays in one room, and, my favourite, it stays organized and findable.

And the power is out. Been out since just after 5am today. No leaks, no messes and I think everything is accounting for. Now to just wait it out.

One of my favorite tanks to distract me during my work day. Cyano is tough though...I recently had a bout that i'm still fighting off. Hope the power is back soon for you. My whole home generator was the best insurance i've ever bought. It was cheap in comparison to what I spent on tank build.

michika
09-11-2014, 01:44 AM
The generator came out but never got turned on. My 1st backup system, battery power heads for oxygenation, worked well, and my second back up, the generator, wasn't really needed. After ~9 hours with no power the tank only dropped 2 degrees. I "covered" the top to keep the heat in for about 4 of those hours.

Everything seems to be business as usual in the tank.

I do need to upgrade my generator though as it's only sized to run the tank; pumps and heaters particularly. Some lights now too since I'm mostly LED now as well. The next step up would be a whole home system.

Take a look at KMS tools for the Whole home system. They have a store in Calgary and they were the cheapest price I ever found.

Ugh. I am so tired of cyano. I just got rid of it early this year, only for it to return late July after a vacation away. It is getting better; I clean the glass less often, I blow off the corals and rocks less frequently. But, I am still tired of its maroon colour and how hard it is to tell apart from some types of coraline.

Today I scraped the glass, I miss when I only did this every 10 days rather than every 3. I blew everything off today with my good old trusty turkey baster too; stringy pieces of cyano everywhere. There was a break for drinks and a pep talk on why I don't quite need to bust out the Red Slime remover yet. The kalkwasser reactor got refilled, and the parameters tested. Now its back to the old reefkeeping standards; time and patience. I just want to stock my tank with SPS.

Hi Catherine

What kind of salt are you using I was using H2O ocean and i started getting cyano. I am now switching and havent had any cyano come back since the switch.

Hey,

I use Instant Ocean. The cyano this time around is definitely nutrient based. While I was on holidays my house sitter added at least an extra 2 cups of pellet foods to the tank over a 14 day period in addition to that one of my yellow tangs died during that same time period which just made things worse. :( Thanks for the recommendation though.

Much improved! Are you just blowing it off? Or big water changes too?

michika
09-18-2014, 10:04 PM
Thanks guys.

In the beginning when it happened I did quite a few large water changes and manually removed as much of the rotting food as possible from the tank. That was the end of July and early August. The rest of August I focused on manually removing the cyano, at first every day, and later every 2nd day.

Now I'm at the point where I blow off the cyano every 2-3rd day, and I usually scrape my glass concurrently. I used to only have to clean my glass approximately every 10 days. The last piece of the puzzle is dialing in my parameters; my system sucks back magnesium like no tomorrow and I'm constantly needing to bump my dKH right now. The fine tuning of parameters on a system this size is not that fun sometimes.

michika
09-22-2014, 02:48 PM
Low magnesium this morning after skipping testing Friday through Sunday. I need a better way than dosing to maintain my magnesium.

Mg per 100ppm @ 700g = 11 cups Mag. Sulphate or 9 1/3 cups Mag. Chloride

Chloride and sulphate mix I assume?

How and when do you dose , a 100ppm even monthly is very high

Salinity is correct and calibrated?

What Salt mix?

Consumption of mag though is very little in respect , even in large tanks , ppm is still ppm ......unless mag is removed.

It's most likely the water changes and low mag amount in the salt

me?

My mag dropped to 1240ppm this morning an hour after lights on. I'm just hand dosing right now to get things back into line (1300-1350ppm) as my tank works through this surge. Then it will be back to the dosing pump and daily "top offs". It will probably take me 4-10 days, of hand dosing, to get it back where I like it.

The usual daily drop is less than 10ppm, but over 5ppm, if we assume test kits to be THAT accurate. This "growth" spurt isn't usual in that the draw is higher, but it's not wholly unexpected as it does seem to happen, the spurts, with a certain regularity.

My clams have some giant new ridges that developed significantly over the last week. (Finally, they haven't done much growing since July) There is quite a bit of new coraline algae on the rocks and glass in my refugium since last weekend, my LPS and somke SPS are growing, the LPS much faster than SPS.

- still battling cyano which has gotten worse again this week. Seriously considering using red slime remover as nothing I do seems to be working.
- started making the canopy panels and a floor to ceiling panel to complete the forward facing side.

The new Hydra 52 was added yesterday afternoon. It really brightens up the left side. At first glance I am now unsure if I need to add at third a final 52 to the set up. Right now to my eyes the colour is perfect, the intensity is just right. Unfortunately I don't know how to properly represent this in photos, yet.

The lighting now goes:
SOL Blue | Hydra 52 | SOL Blue | Kessil 360w | SOL Blue | Hydra 52 | SOL Blue

cool mix of lights , how do you like the kessil compared to the other fixtures?

michika

I actually really like my lights. I love the kessil for spot lighting, e.g. for my bay of clams or plates. Its incredibly easy to use. I feel like I got a great fixture for the price and I will definitely be purchasing another in the future. For spread though and price I am pleased with my Hydras.

Eventually I do want to add two more fixtures, probably Hydra types, and kessils as needed.

My fish lately are just plumping out. I haven't added anything to my tank for awhile. I did add a fish to my QT yesterday. I'm very excited for this fish, I've wanted one for over a decade now.

My tank otherwise is just chugging along. I wouldn't mind adding a second auto feeder to my system, but its not something I really need. So in the mean time I just work at keeping my parameters where they should be while seeing how fat I can make my fish. I'd like to add more SPS, but I just can't justify the cost some of the local stores are wanting per frag right now.

When I get home tonight I'll hook you up. Maybe I can get a few photos of my emperor; he is starting to change colours!

I'm debating pulling the trigger on another and hopefully my last light for the centre of my tank. Might go for a drive at lunch.

A little late but the yellow tang issues you had early on.. I originally bought a school of them as well 15 total for my 16' tank. Everything worked out well at the start (first day) ended up losing 2 right off the bat then slowly started losing more and more. Did you ever figure out why? I know for a fact mine had no signs of aggression or marks on them but still lost the majority of them.

Would like someone else's opinion on schooling yellow tangs who has tried it before.

On another note love the tank and size will have to go back and keep reading just found the build today.

Oh doh! It, the FTS, totally slipped my mind.

As for the yellow tangs, or any tang, it seems the secret is food. They thrive on more rather than less, in my experience. I would attribute a bunch of my success to auto feeders and regular feedings.

Your tank sounds so fun! I would love to follow along if you have a journal.

I may have found my next QT inhabitants.

In other news I am super unhappy with my black tang. The thing hides ALL the time. Boo! Barely comes out to be seen. He may be out more often in the dawn/dusk and night hours but he's hard to see.

The new LED fixture I ordered for the centre of the tank was having problems communicating with my Apex controller. It was returned and I will look at picking up either a new AI fixture or maybe something new. Not sure yet. Research to do.

I added 4x 4ft actinic T5s to the system to supplement as I'm noticing colours are fading.

I have new sand to add, but I'm waiting to finish making water for today's WC.

Bought a collection of wrasses for the tank. Been waiting for a year to add new fish so this is exciting!

I'm trying out some new salt, Reefer's Best, as I'm getting tired of manually bumping Ca and Mg all the time. I don't mind Coralife Marine and all, but I want to look around and see what else is out there.

I'm having some phosphate problems which I'm attributing to needing to replace my RO/DI media. A 150g water change ended up bumping my phosphates up by 0.12ppm!

I'm preparing to tear down about 1/3 of my aquascaping in the near future; my fish have grown so much that they need new hiding places.

If it's all that and a bag of chips I may try it but it's pricey. I know someone who swears by it but it never hurts to have a second opinion.

Looking awesome! Radion looks soooo much better than Kessil.

Regarding the PO4...did you know that DI resin loses it's ability to attract ions once it has become "full" and will suddenly start to release ions? So you can get a big flush of all the nasties the DI resin removes like ammonia, phosphate, silicate, etc.

Dinner yesterday
https://vimeo.com/188429860

Algae growth is increasing and I'm debating adding making adjustments to my two skimmers. I'm always fighting phosphates lately and it's definitely from my dry food. I've been dialling back where I can; feeding less overall, but more frequently. However that can only take me so far. I really wanted to invest in another LED fixture, but water quality is more important.

Glass cleaning frequency is down from every 5 days to every 3.5 days. It's the most labour intensive part of all my reef keeping activities. So while very minor in the grand scheme of all things, it's noticeable and has been a great indicator.

Rare shot from the opposite end. Today we had a flood. Our drain backed up from roots in the clay pipe. This also happened a number of years ago. Thankfully we were home and mostly prepared. We have a wet vac and buckets to collect the water. Most everything in one half of the basement is in rubbermaids, or elevated. My store of extra drywall, my freezer, a wall and a carpet cleaner are write offs. Same goes for a brand new mattress set I was storing. Boo.

Thankfully, no damage to the tank. The stand the QT system and refugium use was submerged for awhile. It is kiltz painted, but I suspect it will have to be replaced. Tank stand was also submerged, but it's fully enclosed and sealed, also, steel.

So Sneaky DB got a new home?

Jeez, that flooding really sucks. It was septic?

Thanks! Yes, I shall send the Emperor onwards if he doesn't improve. The thing is the guy doesn't eat corals (SPS, LPS) or clams, so it's a really really hard choice. Right now I just keep getting new containers to replace the old ones for the rainbow brain. Also, the extra fruit is delicious! Yum!

The flooding was just plain water from my dish and clothes washers. Oh and probably some of my shower.

I've had a remediation company paid for and sent by my insurance come in to check things out. But the damage is barely more than my deductible so it's not worth a claim.

I ordered a calcium reactor a while back to help with the depletion ramp up. I'm hoping it comes into stock soon. I'm finding dosing with the set up I have almost unable to keep up. I need bigger containers for my solutions. I think I'll try out the wine and beer making stores to see about some silicone corks and cheap airline.

I'm adding some of my spare LED lights onto the existing rack. I'm finding some corals are reaching in directions that need better illumination. I'm starting with the left side.

I've also been adding a little more sand to the display, this is my last attempt at filling the blank space at the front of the tank.

Other than the reactor, I have no current purchase plans for the tank. I'm hoping I can ride out winter and spring with just regular maintenance.

Of course I will replace the panels around the tank, but that doesn't count. :P

Depending on the product I use either 4L jugs made extra concentrated or a 5g bucket, also concentrated.

I go through lots of magnesium, some calcium and an ok amount for dKH.

Over the summer I switched to a more expensive salt for my SPS and found no great improvement in much, except for the additional cost.

Which calcium reactor did you go with?

I picked an octopus brand, but I was at an LFS yesterday over the lunch hour and the owner thinks the company isn't sending it as it's been quite a few months now.

I'm now researching a replacement. Hopefully to be set up over the holidays for easier initial monitoring.

I've also decided it's time to regime my emperor. I'm really sad about the decision, but it's best for all.

Went to Edmonton this weekend and was thoroughly disappointed. Prices were all 20%+ more for the same products and no stock anywhere. I'm sad, I packed coolers and everything.

Yeah, fish stock in Edmonton is pretty sparse from what I've seen. Never been to Marine Experience though, and everyone says that's the place to go. Are you looking for anything in particular?

Where's the place to go in Calgary these days?

Livestock mostly was my goal. However there were some drygoods; T5 lamps, dosing chemicals, reactor media, back up parts/equipment.

Um, I'm actually not all that sure on where in Calgary anymore. I've been roaming between Oceans, Wai's and Pisces to meet my needs lately. I don't get a lot of opportunity to shop anymore, as I either buy in bulk or I'm cash flush when the stores are livestock poor. :( But sometimes things do align and I end up with bags on my office floor while I work out the last couple hours of my day.

Some photos from the tank cam. It really shows the green from non-low iron glass.

I have a cheap Foscam I got from Amazon. I think I paid either just over or under $100 for it. Does night view and can be remotely controlled. It's set up explicitly to avoid spying on people in the space, it's just for fish peeping.

Note the difference in the quality when streamed via the Apex vs the just Foscam app; above via Apex, below Foscam.

Thanks for the info. And wow that is a noticeable difference. I guess if the camera is exporting to something other than it's own native app that it's somehow sending out a lower resolution image?

How do you have the camera mounted? It looks like a fairly low viewing angle?

In my case I'd probably have to mount it on the ceiling like a security cam or something. In which case it would be aimed a bit downward. Probably not the best angle for viewing but it would still solve the superficial want of looking at the tank when not at home. And the worst case scenario someone of hacking in to spy would see the back of my head if I was looking at the tank, and well, I kinda see that as being more their problem than mine.

I think some of the newer cams have anti-glare algorithms

From what I understand the camera itself uses a JPEG scream and the Apex is pointed at the stream. Apex streams as multiple photos not a video stream which contributes to the downward change in quality.

You can google your camera model + mjpeg support for how to do so.

It's mounted in between 4 way return on the left side behind the panel.

If someone did devote resources to hacking it they could move the camera to see other in tank angles and maybe the seam on the front left corner. It's intentionally positioned that you can't see anything but into the tank. I had my thinking cap on for that one.

Unless you like the pretty fishes then uh...yeah.

It's worth it for peace of mind when away. I like to sign in at meal time to make sure everyone is ok in my absence. I also pull up the link at work sometimes when I need a break from contentious stuff.

I'm struggling to find bulk magnesium of a quality I'd trust to put in my tank. And on top of that in large enough quantities to satisfy my tank's thirst. I wish I could go to the local grocery store and just load up on bath salts.

I ripped out piles of gsp this week. It was satisfying. Moving into polyps shortly. I can't wait to purge my tank of these.

Bonus find is all the galaxy colonies I have growing. I'll have to set them up a space in my refugium so I can sell/trade them off to new homes.

I'm also now on my third attempt to catch the emperor. It's time for him to move on from the tank, but the problem is he knows what's going down so he's become extra good at hiding. One day...one day...

I had to remove a butterfly fish from my big tank recently. I knew from the time I put him in that I would have trouble when it was time to get him out, but I needed him to serve a purpose (which he did well) so I tried to ride it out as long as I could, but it became time this fall. I had to use the clear birdnetting that you sometimes see used for tank lids. I had to cover the rocks and close off all the gaps and caves. I ended up using all of it and it still took me 1.5 hours but eventually he was cornered and had no further escape route.

Or you could try a fish trap. The way I have my tank in my wall without front access means I can't use a trap to remove fish from my big tank. But otherwise those are said to work well..

michika

It may be fishtrap time soon.

But on the bright side I've reduced my GSP colony and started removing button polyps.

I was also able to remove one of the plastic covers as my clams have now affixed their feet. I'm hoping to get a few things done before January on the cleaning and reorganizing front.

I also found bulk magnesium, just waiting on my shipment to arrive.

Where did you end up getting the Magnesium? I grew weary myself of trying to source enough so I switched to Walmart and Canadian Tire about 6 months ago. Bath salts for the sulfate and sidewalk ice melter for the chloride (I did research what brands people were using.) So far I haven't noticed anything bad but a part of me keeps thinking "this is bath salts and sidewalk ice melter". So I'm curious about alternatives still.

Hahaha yes. All spring break prep!

Added some 3D printed pieces to float switches to auto shut off individual skimmers when the collection cups are full. Currently they gurgle and overflow back into the tank should they not be emptied.

Interesting. So you would drill a hole in the bottom of the cup, insert extended float switch from the inside. What are you wiring them to? Apex?

It hangs down from the cap of the skimmer. Holes already exist there, so no modifications needed. It's wired to a breakout box/Apex.

My job is eating all my time. :( I miss being home and enjoying my tank. However, I also enjoy paycheques.
