Where did you find the 2nd ones ?

Also the first ones (lunar eclipses) you might want to keep them in a more shaded or indirect light spot. They seem to melt in direct light.

Hard to say I have had tones of colonies melt on me, Zoantharia as an order tends to be pretty diverse so you need to find the correct light/ flow for each colony.

Couple tips:
-Many zoanthids have horrible track records in captivity, these are usually the sought after ones adding to the frustration. Aquacultured corals just like SPS tend to be a little more resilient so buying cultured is the best way to go.

-Healthy fish food high in HUFA's is key to healthy fish and more importantly healthy fish poop. Studies on Zoantharia nutrition tend to be few and far between but generally identify dissolved organics and bacteria as a large contributors of Nitrogen and Carbon not acquired through photosynthesis. Having a healthy system which can easily turn nutrients into bacteriobiomass works wonders for zoanthids. In addition to the bacteria, fish waste and detritus is routinely captured by species from the families Parazoanthidae and Sphenopidae while Zoanthidae tend to rely more on photosynthetic processes. Identifying the family helps identify what care is required, this unfortunately is not an easy task for beginners.

-Actinics make the florescent pigments in zoas POP, the bluer the spectrum the more "Pop" you get. Of course there is a trade off with growth and color so finding the sweet spot is a tricky ordeal.

-Flow is pivotal, although branded as beginner coral high variable flow mixed with strong lighting is highly beneficial for pretty much all species of Zoantharia.

The biggest tip I can give though is once you put the colony in and find a good spot for it DONT MOVE IT. Everytime a colony moves it has to photoacclimate which can be an easy stressor, in a reef full of infectious microbes stress is the enemy.

perhaps being picked on or nipped at...nudis,fish,bristleworms,crabs etc. try moving them to a different spot if its none of the above and see if it helps, unless they are completely grown in in which case youll just have to observe them day and night to see when they open and why they open or close:):)

So I got it home, fragged the single polyp, and now I have what you see in the pic! One of my favorite zoas that I own for sure.

I tell people this all the time, I think zoas are every bit as tricky as SPS ......they are collected from a wide range of zones making figuring out light and flow requirements very difficult ..... I wish websites and such wouldn't classify them as an easy beginners coral

I agree 100%. Every colony is different, a lot of success with zoas comes from a lot of trial and error. If they don't seem happy, give them more light, or less light, more flow, or less flow... They can be very picky sometimes but once try are happy, they are awesome to look at!

Same here, always bad luck so far but these were from a tank where they were thriving so I'm hoping for better luck. I've split it and placed it in a couple areas so we'll see how it goes.

and then i made some frags for friends running my grinder and cutting disk right through........ the remaining zoas grow into each other.....since the rock is completely overgrown when the zoas grow they fall off the rock, i simply had to make my cuts where the zoas are " falling off" once they heel where i cut them they turned out like that:P

that particular frag is growing very well ill see if it lasts or not and im curious what the babies will be:)

Yeah, they are definitely on my top 3 list of zoas in the tank with the space monsters and god of war. The person I bought them from, didnt have a name for them but they look a lot like the desert storm zoas I got from him but mixed with a hawaiian sticky punch. The desert storm zoas in the last pic are killer in person as well. The frag to the left of it are closed but they look like a purple and green version of the blue agave. All of them have crazy neon green pe mouths. :wink:

There could be so many reasons why they are melting and its hard to pinpoint what it is exactly. I have things melt as well, while all my others thrive. Some corals just dont do well in one persons tank but then do great in others. There could be pests that are bugging the zoas as well, always give them a good dip before putting them in the tank. Dose vitamin c as I find it helps with the overall health of znp's. I put 1000ml tablet in the morning and another one at night, straight into the sump and have it disolve by itself. Dont put powder straight into the sump though as it may make your skimmer go bonkers, always dilute it in water first. I also feed lots and have several different powdered food I mix in with the frozen. Light and flow also play parts in the happiness of zoas, some like flow and light, while others like no flow and shade. Honestly, I think you just have to play around with the setup until everything is happy and just learn from any mistakes, Ive made tons but as long as you learn from them, you can always bounce back and do it right the next time. :wink:

thats from a recent wild collection, if you have a daylight pic i can prob get you an id , but out of that whole shipment(which went everywhere in north america) most have no names. i believe it is from an aussie shipment:)

i have all the zoos that came in on that order, ive noticed several people in different proivinces and states looking for ids.....some have recently hit coralpedia.


in most of the species the colors are mixed, and some of the colors like the yellow/green above are hard to distinguish.

Not a PPE morph of any sort(I don't think anyway). These are smaller and are mottled green/orange and have a small fluorescent orange mouth. I have pics but no time to upload right now. I'll try to get them up after work. I've seen yellow mouths and green mouths but never orange.

Unknown name...these beauties melted during the week I was in BC right after MACNA. They got really bad bag rub on the way home. All the Zoas were in the bags for about 30 hours and flew in the cargo hold in the planes with no heat packs and not even a styro box (I will plan better next time!).

question for the zoa collector's.......have any of you ever seen a zoanthid with a fluorescent orange mouth?

Okay so I managed a decent pic of these zoas FINALLY(I kinda forgot about taking pics to share :redface:)

and here's another that have the orange mouths(not as bright though), they're the deep pink ones on the bottom left.(In the 1st pic you can see these on the far right as well. They're blurred out but the mouth definitely still pops.)

Not them unfortunately but that's okay cause I still love them. Maybe I'll call them Jack-O-Lanterns(they remind my of a not fully ripened jack-o-lantern with that bright orange mouth and mottled orange and green mix).

The above are Green Day Packers, not so much an orange oral slit as a orange patch around the mouth.

You're so lucky! I brought a single polyp of Blue Agave back from MACNA in September. It did great and sprouted 2 babies, then promptly melted in December. So sad... :(
