So after almost a year's hiatus.

I am one with tank again. :D :D

Bit of info.

33 gallon system. custom made sump. 2MDQX return througha SQWD, MAK4 closed loop. Berlin skimmer for now. VHO's only till the tank is stable again. Then dual 10KK Ushios will go on. I am hoping to swap out the MAK4 and the 2MD for two T4's.

I'll post a shot of the tank running when the sand settles again. But in the meantime here is the tank sans water etc.

dido with steves nicley done comment. so how's the flow with that huge manifold using the loc line?

your square reactor looks massive, lol. but im sure your calcium demand will sky rocket soon enough

Wow!! You've been busy.

The flow of the closed loop is awesome. Very hapy with it that is for sure.

For now the Ca demand will be kinda low. Not putting MH on there for a while. Need to buy a new M138 ballast so I can do the dual 250W Ushios I want. For now I'll let it stabilize and when it is ready throw the MH's on there.

Yup I have been busy. lol to say the least.

Sure looking good today. Slowly getting the rock set up the way I want it.

Have waaay too much tho. lol Sump is filling fast.

Nice job Darren!

Hey how tall is your canopy? I am still building mine, the lights will be roughly 10 inches over the water line. I have two ice cap fans and I notice that you have 4 in there. I'm still worried about heat and I do not have an under the tank sump yet (Although the back of my canopy will also be open). Did you feel that you had to have the 4 fans or was it just for overkill?

Can't wait to see it up and running!

Best,

Rob

Rob,

The canopy is about 6" high. Not much higher than that. I put four 4" DC fans in there as I know I will be putting a couple of MH's in there down the road. For now it's VHO's only. I have fought heat issues before and don't wnat to mess around this time. :)

And she's up n running.. :D That is for sure. :)

Chris,

yeah they are. Ryland had them on there when I bought the tank and stand. Never took them off.

lol

hi Darren,

How big is this tank?

GinKu

is ur tank loud
is there alot of water flow noise?
it seems like the way u did it, seems very quite
is it?

Kai-Wei,

It's a 33 again. My fav size. ;)

Ginku,

No water noise whatsoever. The noisiest part of the system is the SQWD. It chatters. The pumps make some noise too but I am used to that already.

Need to buy a new M138 ballast so I can do the dual 250W Ushios I want.

According to http://www.ushio.com/files/Aqualite.pdf you actually want a M58 for the Ushio 10000K 250W. Unless there's still an advantage for using the pulse-starts still? I know the other wattages in the moguls want pulse-start but this one always stuck out at me, they say M58 not M138.

Have been talking a some people that have had problems starting the ushios on a 250W reg ballast. Then swtiched to a pulse start. No problems anymore. I have one laying around so....

Hmmm, interesting, well good to know at any rate.

So how do you have your fans arranged? Two in, two out? All in? All out?

DJ88

All in.. Why mess with what I am used to. ;)

Darren, if you want some serious light get M80 ballasts and use them. the put out a fair amount of light. I don't remember the PAR #'s exactly but it was just shy of the AB and the 250 watt radium. Actualy if you like the 250 watt radiums you shoudl see how nice they burn on the HQI ballasts.

I wish I could look into all kinds of fancy ballasts right now. But I am in major cheap mode for a while. I have the 250W pulse here and may try it if I can get a mogul socket and such.

As of right now I won't be throwing MH on this tank until next year. :frown:

hi Darren,

How do you like the background being blue? I painted mine blue also, and wish that I'd painted black instead. What I've found is with blue, some of the colours (especially blue, purple, pink) get washed out. When u take a picture, the colour just don't stand out. Oh, well, too late for that!

Just my 2 cents!

I hung a piece of paper spray-painted black on the back of my tank. I would recommend this course of action to anyone who hasn't yet painted their tank. It works very well.

Kai,

I really like the blue so far. I am hoping that with only VHO's on there right now I'll get a nice growth of corraline on it. Who knows

A small change to the equipment used on this system. As I sold the MAK4 and 2MD, plus a few other pieces of junk I had around here, I put two Velocity T4's on the tank.

niiiiiiice... man are they ever quiet. Don't even know they are on.

Now to quieten down the flow noise in the overflow. and this will be whisper quiet. Unless someone can come up with some 0dB fans. ;)

This thing is a dream now. awesome flow.

I am guessing about 55x's turnover with the two pumps. Hmm what next?

Delphinus
06-26-2003, 02:49 PM
Ahh .. I was kind of curious as to why you switched the pumps. So it was for noise levels? Are there other reasons as well? How do these new ones compare in terms of consumption?

No turbulence in your sump from the (I presume) increased turnover?

... more questions

Weren't you using a LG2 as the sump return? Isn't a T4 a HUGE step up in terms of flow? Now I'm really curious about how turbulent that sump is.

How hot do the T4's run? I thought when they came out there was some noise on the groups about heat issues (but I could be remembering wrong).

DJ88

Tony,

noise was the main thing here. I don't have an enclosed stand to hide the pumps in and reduce the noise. So outside they went.

The MAK and the 2MD both were and are awesome. But silence is golden.

There is a fair bit of flow in the sump but the baffles are far enough apart that there really isn't much in the way of turbulence. The flow is up yes. But noise or bubbles isn't. Which is nice. I made the sump with an increase in return pump size in mind. I just didn't expect it to be so soon. ;)

With both T4's going the tank temp has gone up just shy of two degrees. Right now I am sitting at 80. Which is nice. I'll probably add a fan over the sump that comes on when the tank temp gets past 80 this summer. Just need the thermistor and build the controller.

Darren,

I'm interested in the T4 size compared to you MAK4, you got me thinking I should switch out my almost new MAK4 and my MAG18 on my closed loop/chiller.

Question 1 size, they look smaller on J&L pictures.

Question 2 how or does the flow look any different on you closed loop from the MAK4 to the T4.
