I am costing out building my own 180gal. Does anyone know the best place to get glass near Vancouver. Also is it worth it to go with a Starfire front pane?

Any help is appreciated.

Joe.

I got some small panes at Delta Glass and Mirror in Surrey. They were half the price I was quoted at White Rock Glass!

crystal glass - real cheap and good services. They have shops in Richmond and Burnaby.

This is where I buy my glass as well, great prices and if you want they can polish the edges for a real nice finish, definatley go with starfire for the front pane, well worth the extra $$$$$ What dimensions are you thinking? a 180 that is 6x2x2 is going to take 44 square feet, last time I bought 1/2" it was $26 per square you're looking at $1144.00 just for tank glass not including bracing, starfire, drilled holes, overflow, silicone or any edge treatments, I only paid $1100 for a ready built 180 with dual overflows. Would be a fun project but you won't be saving any money building your own. I may have some old 1/2" pieces in the shop from other projects, you are welcome to them free but you would have to come and get them. Good luck, have fun and post pics!

Thats info worth sharing! how thick was the glass you used? that works out to less than $9.00 per square!! my local shop quoted me $36.00 for 1/2"

It was $3.50 a square + drilling + polished edges. Tempered for free.
I don't think they were allowed to sell to me so pm me for the info
sorry I used 1/2" as well. I also got 2, 4x24" pieces for cross braces

I find that with glass under 3/8" you won't notice any appreciable difference in clarity between regular float and Starphire/low iron. At 3/8" you'll start to see a difference and at 1/2" it is significant. So for a 180 gallon using 1/2" glass Starphire is a good investment if you are planning to keep the tank long term.

He is probably buying if from the larger outfits like Bronco, Tempa, or Garibaldi but they won't sell to the public you need an account. This is where the other outfits buy it from.
