View Full Version : Snail - approx 3mm - 4mm in diameter

I let a friend put a bunch of his corals in my tank last summer because he was in the process of moving and needed to re-establish his 170 gal tank.

My tank is now 'infested' with these small little snails. Do not see many when the lights are on. There is literally 100's in my 120g tank.

Anyone have any ideas how I can get rid of them or just manage the situation by controlling the population ??

I believe there called colonista snails. Not harmfull at all.

What kind of snails are we talking about?
Are they collonista snails? If so they aren't a bad thing unless you can't stand to see them all over the place. Many types of wrasses will make the population a lot smaller very quickly. If these are not the snails you have can you post a pic or find a pic online that matches?

Check out Rissoid snails as well. They are also harmless.

These are the very same snails. Just to confirm, many types of wrasses will be able to control these snails ??

Are wrasses coral safe / friendly ??

If they are not doing any harm and you only see them when the lights are out why worry about it.
Their tiny egg masses are food for your other fish or coral.

They irritating because because the snails are making there way into my pumps.

Its caused lots of problems with my needle wheel on my ASM skimmer. Renders it useless becuase if decreases the bubbles.

Try a Yellow Coris Wrasse or Sixline Wrasse.

Unfortunateely, the Yellow Coris Wrasse is not reef safe. I'll definitely try the Sixline Wrasse.

The Yellow Coris, aka Canary Wrasse, is one of the most reef safe wrasses out there and I'm not sure it would eat these guys. Sixlines can be bullies and adding one may upset existing fish, be cautious. The snails have grown in numbers for a reason...a food source and limited competition. If they annoy you just add some other snails to compete and eventually they will wane on their own.
