I have a lighting unit with built in fans. One of them is so loud I can't hear myself think. Is there a way to make it quiet or do I just try to find a replacement for it? It has a rattle and it will get more quiet for a short period but never whisper quiet. Usually it just rattles and hums incessantly.

Can cleaning it or doing something to it help matters or is it loud because it is shot?

Thanks in advance.

Nope you can not service these fans. Pull it out and check the label for voltage/amperage and then find a suitable stealth computer fan.

Thanks for the reply. I figured it was worth asking about it. We bought the unit used and it was quiet at the seller's place. I was hoping that perhaps in the move some dried salt had fallen into the unit and was causing the noise.

Thanks again for the reply.

I have an icecap variable speed ( has a temp probe, the hotter it gets the faster the fan goes) expensive but quiet and well built.

If it is making noise and you are removing the fan, take the sticky decal off of the end and put a drop of oil there. Worked for my computer fan. Still going after a year.
Besides, what is there to lose? not working properly now.

Thanks for the info, and I will be trying the oil in the fan. Why spend money if you don't need to...

Make sure the blades of the fan are clean and not full of dust or salt this can cause an off balance situation and make the fan loud it also makes the fan work harder and causes more air/wind resistance and more noise

Hope this helps
