View Full Version : Keeping reef tanks too clean...

I've been doing a lot of reading about nutrients in the tank environment, especially regarding extremely mixed reef tanks including macroalgae, corals, fish and other organisms. I'm very interested in this as my tank plan so far includes:

Calcareous Macroalgae (Halimeda, Neomeris, maybe Mermaids Fan [latin?])
Other Algae (Chlorodesmis, Peyssonnelia, maybe Dragons Tongue [latin?])
Vascular Plants (Halophila, maybe Halodule)
Invertebrates (Bumblebee Shrimp, Snails, Fanworms and Christmas Tree Worms)
Soft Corals (Zoas, Ricordea)
A few Stony Corals
I might one day try a clam

So, you can see that I'm aiming for a very biodiverse environment. To that end, in my reading I came across this http://fins.actwin.com/aquatic-plants/month.200501/msg00167.html It seems that some macroalgaes will grow out of control in very low nutrient environments... This seems paradoxical, anyone have any input? Also, does anyone think that having an overly strong skimmer might affect the plankton populations that I would like to acheive? Any input on my situation could help me in my equipment choices.
