My problem is that I have a steelframe stand made for a 125 gallon tank (72X20X24)
My 72 gallon tank is 48X18X20
--so the width of the 72 gallon tank is 2" shorter than the stand.
--If I put a 1/2 inch piece of plywood on the top of the stand...would that support the weight of the 72gallon tank?

Probably, but if I was in your situation I would put a few 2x4's across the width and then put the plywood on top of the 2x4's. Or go up to 1" plywood but I would still rather see you put a few 2x4's across the width.

Maybe take the frame to a welding shop and have them weld in some support tubing where it is needed, a little black paint .... badda bing. Just throwing another option at you.
Good luck,
Kelly

Thanks for the replies. I wasn't sure if putting 2X4 across the width would be sufficient. In that case, I'll probably put 2X6 across the width and the floorboard on top of it.

--I had thought of taking it to a welding shop...but I'm sure they charge an arm and a leg. I guess I could call and find out.

--Well..knowing that this can be done, I'm gonna get my 72 gallon tank drilled.

My tank was shorter than my frame also.. what I did was a double layer of 3/4" plywood over the frame and everything worked perfect.
