Hey Guys, and Gals., it would be awesome if everyone participated in this thread.

I want to know whats your disply tank size and how much GPH is flowing in your power heads combined.

I can start.

125 gallon, SPS, with 5900 gph,= 47.2 x per hour.

Trigger Man
01-14-2009, 09:18 PM
around 125 gallon, 4 k4's (4800), and a Mag 18 return (1800) so grand total of 6600 gph. I assume the mag losses around 600gph due to plumbing so 6000 gph (around 48 x per hour) when everything is running (around 3-4 hours a day) and 3600 gph (around 28.8 x per hour) when the wavemaker is turning 2 K4s on and the other 2 off in a 45 second rotating cycle.

In my 125gal I have around 7400 GPH. (Mag18 return, 2x Koralia 4, 1x Koralia 3 and 2x Vortech MP40W's running about 80% on Lagoon Mode) for about 60x turnover per hour.

SPS Main Display 130gal with a super rough guess at 9340GPH = 72x TO

60 gal tank
one TUNZE 6100=Flow Rate: 792-3434 GPH
two TUNZE 6550=Flow Rate: 264-1453 GPH
one 6212 = Flow Rate: 792-3434 GPH (now out of the system)
all are on TUNZE multi controller

combined max flow = 9774 or 162.9 x hr turn over, wich is nothing compare the the real ocean swell over the reef top.

Great feed back everyone, also lets add if its, a softy, SPS, or mixed tank.

crazy flow, 162 times, WOW

My reef is SPS dominated. And my guess of 60x is on the conservative side, and I am considering adding more flow still.

220 gallon mixed tank

2x 750 gph return pumps = 1500
3x Koralia 4s (1200 gph) = 3600

Total = 5100 gph

5100 / 220 = 23 x

I will be adding a vortech pump as soon as I can find a good deal.

I have another Koralia 1 but not sure if I should put it in or not...

As to what is in there for corals;
9 SPS large colonies, 12 larger branching SPS frags, 3 types of zoa colonies, riccordia colony, Torch colony, Frogspawn colony, Xienia colony 3 GSP colonies.
So a mix of everything, and now I come to realize why i have been having to up my dosing of Calcium and DKH consistantly.
The tank again,
around 125 gallon, 4 k4's (4800), and a Mag 18 return (1800) so grand total of 6600 gph.

2x K4's - 2400gph
1x Vortech MP40W - 3000gph

I plan on switching the 2 K4's out with another Vortech and maybe leave a small K4 in the back but didnt see any good deals on boxing day for the Vortech's sadly.

So how does one calculate the flow for a wavebox? It moves the entire volume of the tank every cycle (1-2sec.)
not counting the wavebox I have
2x return pumps @1100gph ea.=2200
K-4 =1200
k-3 x 2@850=1700
Total 5100gph in 300 gal tank = 17 times turnover + wavebox.
Don't want to increase flow much more as I think I am pushing the limit for the bubble coral, all sps are doing fine as is.

2 - 750 GPH return pumps = 1500 GPH
2 Koralia 4 = 2400 GPH
1 Aqua Clear 110 = 900 GPH
1 Tunze Turbelle Stream Pump on Control = 3100 GPH

TOTAL GPH = 7,900 / 215 = 37x

30g (24 x 18 x 18) tank SPS Dedicated

2 x modified Tunze Nanostreams at ~ 1200GPH each
1 x Vortech MP20 at ~2000GPH (when at max flow)
1 x return at ~ 200GPH

Grand total: 4600GPH for 153 x turnover

The other day I decided this was too much flow as I watched my m. digitatas grow downwards and most of my SPS do minimal branching and only encrust. So I unhooked the 2 x Tunze Nanostreams and am just running the return and MP20. Perhaps I'm delusional but I've noticed more branching and, coupled with more actinic and less white lighting, increased coralline algae growth.

Mag 18 return (est 1250gph)
2- Koralia 4's
1- Koralia 3

Not delusional at all...I have noticed the exact same thing many times. I bought a nice sized colony of a green acro a few months back. Decided I really like it and so I fragged it a few times to put in different spots in the tank (the tank has years to go before its grown in anyways, so fragging colonies is not a big deal). I have noticed that two of the pieces I put in very high flow have only encrusted while the piece I put in a very, very low flow area is growing like a weed, straight up. The one growing the fastest gets just random flow from different directions because its right in an area where flow from both sides of the tank meet. Says a lot about flow...less but more random has been very good for this acro. Same thing with the digis I have all over the tank. Ones in low flow grow much faster and higher while the ones in high flow grow thicker and diagonally almost.

...but, I recently decided to cut back so I put the Tunzes on timers. Six hours on, 6 off. And opposite each other. So...with at least one Tunze off all the time, flow is now...
4526gph ~ 25x/hour.

as you both have seen there is a lot more to flow than just the amount, you also have to achieve a masive water movment with out blasting with a slight up welling. I had to fiddle with mine for about 2 months to get the growth and shape I wanted and if you have sane forget it as now you are putting that flow in the top 1/2 of the tank so you are realy doubling it in that area.

even with a 144X turnover in my tank, you could put your had anywhere (aside from directly infront of the pumps) and only feel a gentle current anywhere in the tank.

Tunze 6100 (~3,000 gph) alternating with a modified Tunze 6055 (~1,800+ gph)
Eheim 1260 return (~250 gph after head loss etc).

So at most about 3,250 gph of "primary" flow at any one time.

120 gallon display = ~27 times turnover.

33g LPS only. No sump.

Koralia 2 (600 gph)
MJ1200 (300 gph)

A couple small pumps running hob filter for carbon and PhosBan reactor which according to manufacturer's ratings adds another 300 gph to my tank, but I won't add them in because their flow is very indirect.

900 gph total = 27x turnover.

It's kinda tough to compare turnover and flow because the pumps are rated so differently especially when you compare impeller driven to propeller driven. So it's good everyone is listing the brand and model names. :) My MJ1200 puts out more "flow" than the Koralia 2 even though the Koralia is rated as having double the output of the MJ.

It would be tough to get two MJ1200s in my tank and not have my LPS freak out, which would only be 600 gph total going by manufacturer's rating and only 18x turnover. If I had two Koralia 2s I wouldn't get enough flow, and that would be 1200 gph total or 36x turnover.

Decided to look it up for "official" flow rates of my stuff after your post......

K1 - 400gph
F204- 180gph

580gph/15 = 39x turnover
580gph/12 = 48x turnover

Somehow I thought the K1 was 480gph, and the F204 was 200gph? Anywho, more realistic numbers here now. My Fluval runs empty minus carbon so I'm sure its a little higher than 180 running empty, but who knows...

Tunze 6045 = 1200gph

When the sand starts to lift into the water column... or the tips of my SPS start to burn.

20g DT
150 gph return (Eheim 1250)
500 - 2000 gph Vortech MP-20
650 - 2150 gph = 33 ~ 108x Turnover

Lobsterboy started this back in 2009......and I find the data very interesting to see the turnover rate in all of your displays. So lets update our data in this link and keep it going. I see that many people in the past that input data have increased the amount of flow in their displays....it will be interesting to see what they look like now.

1. Please give your type of tank: Mixed Reef / SPS / Softies
2. Tank Volume (display only)
3. Pumps and GPH rating
4. Turnover rate (GPH Grand Total / divided by display volume)

Mixed Reef - Sofies and SPS
140 Gallon Display
2 x MP40 Vortech - 6400 gph
Tunze 6055 - 1500 gph
Koralia 3 - 850 gph
Mag 18 return Pump - 900 gph

Total 9650 / 140 = 68.9 X Turnover

1. Tank will be SPS dominated. May be somewhat of a mixed reef.
2. 300g
3. 2xTunze 6205, 2xVorTech MP60, 1xTunze Wavebox, 2xEheim 1262 (returns)
4. With all of the pumps running at Maximum flow, the turnover is over 100X

Average turnover is probably somewhere around 60X

It's always interesting to see what other reefers do
here's what i run on my home tank
1) mostly sps tank
2) tank volume is around 440 ish
3.1) reeflo sapper for return(1800 ish after head lost)
3.2) reeflo hammer head for close loop(5900 gph)
3.3) 6 mp40w (19200 gph)
3.4) 8 tunze 6055(11624 gph)
3.5) 2 tunze wave boxes(i think it's around 6400 gph)
4) at max flow about 102x hour

i would think average is around 70x hour:biggrin:

Oh sure - your flow has to be 2 more than mine.

Having seen your tank, whatever you are doing seems to be working. Maybe I should add another powerhead to get my flow up to 102X?

i am waiting to see how the mp60 works for you first lol, i may end up pulling all of my tunzes out and run 4 mp60's with my other mp40's. Just not sure yet, lot of money to do that change:cry:

When I first started reading these threads on Canreef and Reef Central I was having issues with cyno algae / turf algae....since I have increased my flow I have no more cyno...and since adjusting my water changes my turf algae is reduced.

When I added the second MP40 to my system it was like a wind storm and it created a lot of added current flow(and some kaotic flow).....my skimmer went nuts for 24hrs....I can say my water clarity is a lot better compared with prior.

1. Mixed Reef
2. 20 Gal Display
3. Mag 7 Return pump with 4' of head loss and ocean motion squirt ~450GPH
4. Turnover rate-- 22.5

Im looking at upping flow after reading this. I like the flow im getting with the motion over what sps I have but I have been thinking that something down low, like maybe an mp10 would move the lower water column very well.

Let keep this going. Anyone else have data to add?? Here's what we are looking for:

1. Please give your type of tank: Mixed Reef / SPS / Softies
2. Tank Volume (display only)
3. Pumps and GPH rating (for return after head loss, if you can)
4. Turnover rate (GPH Grand Total / divided by display volume)

Thanks

71G custom cube, barebottom SPS dominated.

1X Red Dragon 8.2 @ 2165G gph @ 60% = 1732 gph
2X MP40Wes @ 3200 gph each @ 80% = 2560 gph each

Total gph = 6852 gph

Total Turnover = 6852/71 = 96.5x Turnover

interestingly enough, if you take the average of everyone's response it does appear to hover around the 40-50x mark
