Well Im looking for a new design for the rocks in the tank. I would love to have the pillar effect in the tank so that the SPS can grow on top and still leaves lots of swimming space in the tank.

Have you thought of drilling the rocks and then using acrylic or fiberglass rods to stack the rocks up? I have done this in the past and its about the easiest way to do pillars I think.

These are not the rods I ended up using because I was not sure about the paint but you get the idea...

You can see I did not do all pillars and looking back I don't like this aquascape at all but this was how I used them. If I did it now, I think I could do a MUCH better job as you could :)

Mike, I have done this. (Sorry I have no pics though) I made a tall pillar in my 90 gal using 3/4 inch pvc. Use a masonry bit to drill the rock and don't try to drill too large a hole at once; the rock will break apart. Start with maybe a 3/8 bit then go to the larger size. Wear old clothes and drill the rock outside because it is a very messy job. I made a frame of pvc for the base which is buried under your sand. Then cut the center pipe to the height you want. After you drill the rock just feed the pieces down the pipe and rotate them until they fit together well. Don't drill right through the top rock or you will see the pipe in it. Just drill 2/3s of the way through it and set it on top of the pipe. Your vertical pipe should be exactly the right length to do this. Have fun!

The Bonsai sticky in the SPS subforum on RC is also hella cool. I'm thinking of trying to use the same idea when the time comes.

I know you can get nylon threaded rods, washers and bolts at marcorocks.com.

Sanjay over at RC used pillars on his build here:

It's a long read, but the pillar conversation starts on page 24.
