I have a 130 Gal tank. I am working on a sump for it, can somebody shed a little light on the size of holes I should drill for two overflows. Haven't purchased a pump yet but I want adequate flow. How Should I go about building the corner overflows? What material and how too hook it too the tank?

Thanks.

i would go with 2 x 1.5 " holes to run 1" bulk heads of 2" holes with 1.5 " bulk heads
in my old 120 i had 1.5 " holes with 1" bulks in them
now i have 280 with 1" bulks, i wish i could have had 1.5 " bulks in there oh well

you could go with 2 overflows in one corner or one in each side or put in the middle
its up to you on where to put them personnel thought.

Thanks for the info. How about designs on building your own corner overflow, or the type of pump, any plumbing ideas?

thanks Chris

Hey Chris,

What type of corals do you want to keep? Becase it seems like most people want to end up keeping SPS so flow and tank turnover are high on the list of prioritie when setting up a SPS tank. My opinion is to get holes in your tank that can hold lots of flow, like Mike said, two 1.5" bulkheads in each corner should be nice.

Make your own overflows out of black 1/4" acrylic. You can either make them a 90° box in each corner or some people choose one piece 45° overflow box's. You also have to figure out what size the "teeth" should be depending on how much flow you want.

Also, for tank turnover and flow a return pump is a good source for this. LG 4MD, Mag 18, Mak 4... it doesn't really matter. Even smaller is ok as long as in-tank circulation is good.

Just thought that I would let you know asmodeus that I e-mailed Hagen and they assured that there is no tempered glass used in any of their tanks.

Thanks for taking the time to call me.
